Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

Great pics, nice recap. That looked like a load of fun.

Hey Carl, you still around?

Carl, I think if you really put your mind to it and could get to a meet you could have a great shot at the weight pentathalon record. As you start getting to more HGs theres bound to be some with the under 200 category and I think you have the potential to set some records.

Thanks kpsnap. I’ve been following your log. Will you be doing cleans again when your shoulder is ready?
Really cool pics.

I hope to return to cleans. And soon. For some crazy reason, I really love the motion. I’d like to get back to the whole C&J off the floor. It’s been awhile for me.
Thanks kpsnap. I look forward to the day you can get back at the C&J again.

Nice job at the games Carl. Damn good photos!
Thanks Wilson. It was a beautiful place. The wife took the pictures, I was just doing my thing and trying not to look too goofy.

Thanks John, never done a weight pentathlon, its got that funny javelin thingy. I’m tired of tripping over it when I leave the runway.

Thanks Jack, it is a blast. Try it sometime if you get bored with what you’re doing, or just want something new to play with.

Harry, it seems a lot of the games around here have a lightweight division, but the only one I’ve seen with a M50+ Lightweight division is the World Games. On a good day, I think you are right. Stone records couldn’t be too far from what I throw. To be good at weight pentathlons, I’d have to learn to be not so pitiful at javelin.
So far I haven’t liked it enough to learn it well.

Yesterday evening I threw some caber. My 16’ 84 pounder was starting to split, so I cut it down to 14’ and 75lbs, mostly so that I could turn it at least once before it died. Got 7 turns out of 13 picks, with a couple of 80+ degree tosses too. One 2:30 and the rest between 11:00 and 1:00, one 12:00. Need to go out and cut some more now.

Shoot some vids of that caber throw. I’d like to see them

Ok, next Wednesday is the next planned caber tossing foray. Will get some video of it.

Great showing at the games, those guys that you said you had trouble with have probably been doing it longer. You’ll get to 'em I’m sure, probably the next time you meet them.

DZ, thanks for the kind words. Truthfully speaking, it is going to be a long time, if ever, before I beat Jeff Loosle, the guy I lost to in the last games, at anything except maybe stones.

what’s up with big carl?

Here’s what up, thanks for asking.

Just started my 4th cycle of 5/3/1 since my shoulder tweak.

Bench C4 W1
62kg x 5
66kg x 5
70kg x 6

81x1
(66x5)3

DB Rows (65lbsx10)3

Preceded by C&J: 60x2, 70x2, 80x2, (90x1)5, 92.5x1,1, 95x1,1, 97.5 x1,1, 100x1,1, 102.5x1, 105x.5, got the clean, missed the jerk.

Not bad, barely eked out 6 at 68 on the bench last cycle. With C&J, I just got tired towards the end, but better than last week where I got two close misses at 102.5

Been too busy lately. An extra daughter, school starting up, volleyball, violin, art, tae kwon do and soon to be dance classes for three, a clutch needing replaced, relatives from Ohio visiting, That One Guy playing every Thursday at one of the casinos downtown, throwing, lifting,… I often forget to eat. Lost 10 pounds this last month. Need to starting eating better, or at least more frequently. Track meet to qualify for nationals next week. Qualifying distances should be easy, but I’m not expecting anything spectacular this time around. Except for shot, I’ve trained each of the events only three times since last spring.

I guess throwing is just like anything else - use it or lose it?

have you ever done a meet following this long of layoff?

It certainly is soldog. Technique goes quicker than strength. I haven’t done a track meet before with this little preparation, but I did do a weightlifting meet on short notice once. I had just moved to Hawaii (started graduate school there) and one morning, hung over from hard partying the night before, I stumbled across the Nuuanu YMCA where Tommy Kono was active. Found out there was a meet later that day. Results were not good, but it was fun anyway.

Already getting stuff from the Senior games. In case you haven’t seen the schedule yet it runs like this; Age groups 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, will throw: hammer (Jun 17), shot (Jun 18), disc (Jun 19)

Good luck at your upcoming meet, I too sometimes just don’t want to eat.

It’s 3 dance classes, voice and guitar for me… I wouldnt know what to do if I have any more than one kid… I can see how you forget to eat, much less train!

i wish I could not want to eat!

Better stop playing with the hg implements for the week and start back to chuckin the ball and plate.
May they fall far from where you throw them.
amen.

Harry, do all those groups throw together, or different times on the same day? In any case, looks like I’ll be able to watch your throws–I won’t be throwing shot while you are doing discus or something like that. Only 8.5 months to get ready.

Thanks Joe, I’ll do my best, whatever that might be on that day.

Wilson, the training is automatic, its the eating that’s not on a fixed schedule. I imagine with more kids, you would have to either do less with each, or plan for some of their activities to overlap.

John, its easy to forget to eat. All you have to do is plan for 18 hours of activity every day for a while. Especially stuff that takes a long time to finish. Thanks for the well wishes.
