I’ve heard of Tactical Barbell but only seen one person’s log on here to see the workouts. I couldn’t really get a good read on the program from that. The title catches my attention.
You’re the man!
Glad you’re off the boot and can do squats again
From what I remember of reading the books, it’s near-as-dammit a full body 5/3/1 with more structured and outlined conditioning, as opposed to Jim’s “maybe do X or Y or Z for conditioning” protocol.
Still spending the day and night in it, but when I’m out of it (to wash the boot) I noticed that I wasnt in too much pain so I decided I could give squatting a go without it! Foot feels fine flat footed, only feeling pain when I try to curl my toe. The walking/running motion isnt very comfortably, but my static lifts should be fine.
Yep, which is probably why I’m so attracted to it! I’m not planning to run a conditioning program as written but will try to incorporate some conditioning into the routine where/when possible.
I do have a 35lb KB in my basement, so I may play around with it once a week as a conditioning day.
I see. No “grasping the floor” with your feet and toes cue for now I guess. Needless to say, just be careful lol
Yes, still playing things a little safe, but I’m going a little crazy after not squatting or deadlifting for a couple months! Even though I felt weak, it did feel good to get some squats in.
I will try to be careful enough to not make things any worse, thanks.
Tommy Topper here. I don’t think I’ve done any real deadlifting or squatting since November… I can’t wait to grab a bar again, but I’m sure it’ll be a bit since that will involve my bicep.
That’s fucking awesome man! Congratulations on becoming dadstrong
You win! Yeah, it is not fun to be sidelined by an injury. Looking forward to overcoming it and setting new PBs on the other side.
Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate it. I’ve also managed to become #DadTired in the process too.
One good thing about your injury is that it was a complete fluke. If it was a gym injury then you might have to through the hassle of rebuilding form/technique after you heal up. The way it is, you should be able to jump right back in.

Went 4 sets today and only hit 3 sets two days ago. The sets still felt heavy, but already feeling better under the bar. Thinking I’m going to stick with the SSB for my squats to be a little nicer on my shoulders now that I’m squatting and benching 3x per week.

A little more difficult than last week, but hit an extra set and got all reps in.
Second workout of the Operator template in the books. Nice to just go into the weight room and mindlessly just get work done. I think this program is going to fit the bill nicely for my limited time to be able to devote to training.
Getting out of the boot is such a nice feeling. Hows your calf? When I broke my ankle a few years back it was like I had a small bag of jelly hanging off my leg.
Haha, not bad actually. I definitely lost a little size, but I still did enough walking outside the boot throughout the recovery period to engage the calf enough to keep it alive.
I’m pretty sure my right calf has grown though! Crutches seemed to work that calf quite a bit, with pushing off on each step.
Yesterday and today I managed to get out for a quick 1km walk (without my AirCast) wearing a 50lb vest. That is about as far as I felt comfortable with my foot/toe. I was surprised that it felt pretty good afterwards (expected it to flare up a bit). That will be a typical off day for me to just get something in, for now, until I can start finding more time and feeling more ready to push my foot.

Strapped up for the 405lb set, I was soaking in sweat from the previous work. Over 40 degrees celcius today with the humidex (35 without it!). @Despade just hit 15 reps a couple days ago, so I set that as my goal for the workout. I was feeling a little faint after the 315lbs for 5 reps, so I wasnt overly confident I’d get it, but I did.
My last rep I missed the touch, so did a bit of a 1.25 rep for my 15th, lol. Oops.
You had at least 10 more in you!
Yep they looked like a warm up set. Nice
Vey nice. Key difference is yours looked moderately effortless
mine… shiiiiit
