Maple Syrup Strength (littlesleeper)

Haha, hopefully! Prior to the set, I was thinking I’d try for max reps to see if I could reach Pwn’s 23 reps, but given that this was my first time deadlifting in a couple months, I decided to play it smart.

Thanks man, the way 315 felt, I was surprised that the 405 moved like it did.

405 x 15 is 405 x 15 regardless of how you slice it! I’m already feeling muscle soreness in my back from that set, glad I didn’t take it to a true AMRAP, I’d be in rough shape right now!

405 x 15 = smart ?

Just to do a little more work thand @Despade you did 0.25 rep more than him.

Great work Sleepy, how’s the foot holding up?

Haha, well… smart(er) than what I almost did! Glad I stopped when I did because I’m feeling those deadlifts!

Lol, an accidental win I suppose, I’ll take it!

It is doing quite well, thank you. Big toe is basically back to it’s original size. Slight discomfort at the end of my stride, and it is still tender to touch/bump.

24th is my next xray where I will hopefully get my official clearance!

So you’re hopefully allowed to start working out on the 24’th …
Haha I hope they give you the go.

Some call me stupid, others call me stubborn. I prefer the latter.

I’d rather say, you know your body, if it felt out of whack you wouldn’t do it.
I’m exactly like you. If the body can do it, why wait

Based on that set, I think you’ve got it. You had at least another smooth 5 reps in you, and after that I pulled 3 grinders. If you can get even further than that, you should have smooth sailing.

I appreciate you popping in and for the positive feedback. I think it may have been there that day, but I am feeling some significant muscle soreness today and if I had managed 23 reps, I think I’d be in very rough shape today. I may keep up with this higher volume pulling until I’ve acclimated my muscles to pulling again.

I’m not very active in your log, but I do follow along in the background and am frequently inspired by your consistent effort in the gym. Keep setting the bar high for the rest of us!

  • Nice trap bar that you just bought!

Much appreciated dude. High reps are a different kind of suck for sure. I’m pretty bad about commenting in logs too, but had a bit of a “7 degrees of separation” moment seeing other folks talking about high rep deads and it led me here.

GIANT SET
SSB SQUAT
135 x 5
225 x 5
275 x 3
315 x 5 x 5

First workout that I completed 5 x 5 at this weight. 315lbs is finally starting to feel like 315lbs should. Going to probably stick with this weight again this week as my recovery is pretty low right now. Going to own this weight before bumping it up.

Bench Press
135 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 3
265 x 5 - a little aggressive jump from last weeks 245lbs.
255 x 5
255 x 5
255 x 5
255 x 5

265lbs would probably have been fine, but the chinups seemed to have flared up my left elbow, which made bench not feel great.

Pullups/Chinups
Straight arm lat pull downs x 15
Straight arm lat pull downs x 15
Pullups x 5 - left elbow pain
Chinups x 5 + 30lbs - still left elbow pain, possibly worse than previous set.
Chinups on cannonballs + 30lbs - slightly less pain, still not comfortable.

I followed this with a bunch of banded triceps push downs and banded lat stretches (as I’ve also had some shoulder pain flaring up). Need to keep putting time into my prehab work, before all these little nagging pains catch up to me.

I’m battling a bit of nagging elbow pain. I talked with my physical therapist about it and the solution is to strengthen the forearm flexors and/or extensors. For lateral pain (tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis), you focus on the extensors and for medial pain (golfers elbow or medial epicondylitis), you focus on the flexors. I have a little bit of both so I’m just doing everything.

Thank you for the reminder. I had been doing some weekly “Rice work”, literally sticking hands in a bucket of rice and squeezing/extending/circling your hands to hit all the muscles, and my elbow pain had subsided.
It might be time to bust out the asparagus elastics and start working my extensors again!

My wife and I packed up our son for a little impromptu vacation at my mother-in-law’s cottage for the weekend

There is a pair of 15lb DBs, a 20lb and a 25lb DB.

Grabbed the 15’s and did the following:
3 Rounds of:
Standing shrug, clean and press x 10
Rear delt flyes x 10
25 push ups

3 Rounds of:
Rolling triceps extensions x 25
Hammer curls x 25

Since my shoulder and elbow have been a little cranky I figured that these were a good selection for some prehab/rehab movements.
Ended up with a nice little pump, I might do this tomorrow morning before heading down to the dock for vanity sake, haha.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Sorry I’m late to the party, congrats on your addition to the family! Sorry if already said, didnt see it, but what did yall name him? It’s an awesome experience, raising a child. You’ll feel all of the emotions weekly…sometimes daily…haha.

Also congrats on shedding the boot. Time for you to resume domination!

Home gym is where it’s at as a dad!

Thanks man! We are having a blast with him and it is crazy how much we love the little bugger already. We named him Wesley.

It is very nice to be out of the boot. Excited to get back into a more consistent routine but with newborn and a house build, my schedule is a sporadic at best (not complaining!).

Already dreaming of my new home gym once the house is complete…

Your vacation looked like a great time!

So I’ve been thinking about starting to train for a meet with wraps next year (or possibly later this year depending on local meets and how life/training unfolds).
I have some cheap ones I bought off Amazon years ago. Earlier this week I was defeated by targeted advertising. I was just perusing a thread on here comparing knee wraps when…BOOM…Mark Bell is having 20% off with free shipping worldwide…all over my Facebook feed.
Bought a pair of Red SlingShot knee wraps to take for a test drive.
I’m having fun with my SlingShot and bench shirts, so thought that I would sprinkling in some squats with wraps.

On that note, I’m just going to leave this video here for myself for later when I try them out. Unless someone else has another video/method they prefer for self wrapping.

I’m currently brainstorming my next few weeks of training. I think I might try to do a bit of a mashup of several programs/principles. Keep things fun for a bit.

Is your toe ready for intense meet prep though?

You’re in for a treat. I love mine. If you can get over eight revolutions you’ll get some major pop. I’d get some long nose pliers though, and then wrap duct tape around the tines so they don’t chew your wraps up.

Edit

Jaws, not tines. Sorry

I think so. Doc said to let pain be my guide. My toe seems to be fine when not in the flexed position, so squats/bench/deads seem to be alright. Plus, the actual meet prep will still be a ways away (no meet selected yet).

Awesome, glad to hear this. Makes me feel better about the spontaneous purchase! Thanks for the tips. Long nose pliers being added to the gym bag shortly.

Sounds about right. Hope the little bugger won’t complain lol
