Manual Labor and Nutrition

This summer I applied for an internship in New Orleans helping out Katrina victims, and it basically consists of gutting houses five days a week in the somewhat brutal New Orleans summer heat. I spent a week there over Christmas break and it basically consists of knocking down walls, ripping up floors, pulling nails, ripping down siding, etc. I will also be doing some construction, putting up walls carrying materials etc etc.

I have never held a job like this before (mostly office stuff) and although I have done stuff like this before, never for that long of a period (about three months) Who out there has a similar manual job and how did you have to change your nutrition? I am on the Anabolic Diet and have been for quite awhile, and would like to stay on it… would simply drastically ramping up my calories be sufficient? I obviously want to keep training throughout. Personal experience/advice is welcome! Thanks!

I used to work in construction while training six days a week and ate normal.
A decent sized breakfast a 12in sub for lunch a normal sized dinner and a protein shake after my workout. My only issue was that I had to ease off my shoulder training because they would be real sore from work.

My advice would be to eat how you are eating now and monitor how your body feels. If you start feeling spent you might want to increase your calories slightly. You also want to drink plenty of water and get plenty rest. Hope this helps.

I wouldn’t sweat it. In fact, I think it’s a sad state of things that we even have to ask the question.

Growing up I knew lot’s of guys, especially geriatric old farmers who worked all day, every sunny day of the year and I know for a fact they didn’t count calories.

Once I met a French-Canadian lumberjack looking mofo that looked like a refrigerator stuffed in a flannel shirt. Now, for all I know he could be the greatest trainer in the world, because I was 15, was fresh off the farm and couldn’t understand a thing he said, but I kind of doubt it. I didn’t see him eat anything for a whole week except cheap whisky and Copenhagen and he was still big as a gorilla and worked circles around me.

At some point we need to cut the shit and just stop worrying about every little thing.

I get what you are saying, i am more worried about going from a somewhat sedentary job to an active one. my caloric expenditure is bound to go up.

No… he’s saying that human beings have managed to survive (and thrive) for a hell of a long time by working their asses off and not worrying about their diet while doing it… and didn’t have to ask questions that your body is going to answer.

In short, if you work more and end up feeling hungrier than usual… that’s normal. What’s the fix? Eat more.

I worked on a farm as a teenager and ate a ton. And it probably wasn’t enough because I was sore ALL the time. You should be able to eat a lot more than usual, including carbs which you will be earning and burning all day long.

This past August was pretty much my first non-manual labor job. When it comes to manual labor and nutrition, just use common sense:

Up your calories, protein, etc.
Up your amount of rest (at least 8 hours of sleep).
Up your water intake.
