I see cprocket what training fo you follow, from the long arms etc, does that mean your also tall? I’m 6 ft 3 and find squating hard, although weirdly I have a tendancy to go to low, which is a habit I’m struggling to drop.
Glad my squat is to bad, I thought it was appalling compared to my deadlift to be honest.
Brett295 - funny you should say the core thickens that certainly hasnt happened, I was skinny when I started (was a runner) and put on around 5-10 kg something like that, and my waist got thinner, on the last hole on my belt which is scary, I measured the bit to that hole, and its slightly over 26 inches, that cant be a good base. I remember reading Dave Tates articles and he said he had like a 46 inch waist when expanded, and it makes sense really stronger wider base etc.
Do you think I need extra core work to strengthen the weak link, and if so what do you reccomend, as obviously I will try and gain weight, I eat plenty of good food, as I need another 7-8 kg to fill out the 93kg class anyway, but I obviously dont want to develop a belly, as at the end of the day I want to lift big weights, but I will admit I want to look good still.
regarding your questions: no, I am not tall - more average (about 5’9). I saw some stats somewhere on average limb lengths as a percentage of height, and it showed that my arms were on the long side for my size. My DL has always been better than my squat, both 30 years ago when I competed once as a very skinny 148, and two years ago when I did several different meets at 165lb.
Also I have tried many different training styles over the years, and the ratios never changed much. If my squat goes up, the pull goes up too if I’m working it at all.
With my old knees, I can’t do a big volume of squatting anyway, certainly not 3 time a week.
I, perhaps for ego reasons, think of myself as a good deadlifter rather than a bad squatter. I entered a few push/pull only meets, and in one full-power meet, passed my third squat attempt to save energy for the DL.
If I would offer any advice at all, it would be to try 1) eat to gain weight. 2. Don’t overwork the squat if you are not suited to it.
I’m not saying your wrong, I just wanted to offer another perspective. If I focus on my deadlift of course it goes up, but my doesn’t go anywhere. If I put more focus in my squat, my squat goes up and my deadlift goes up. I go for doings mostly squats to kill two birds with one stone and get practice on my form from DE work.
