being around olympic lifting for awhile i can tell you right now those are 15 kilo bumpers…
that makes it 140 kilos or 309, which seems right if someone said already that they saw him doing cheat curls with 300 or so…
that is not 400…i dont see the need for that much bicep work in strongman…
the best strongmen right now are the lighter guys like pudgnowski who have speed and technique…in fact i liked pudg when he was lighter, right now hes too big…
everyone has the equipment now so its easier to get good at specific events, and alot of these events involve running/cardio and the explosive guys just dominate…the bigger guys dominate pressing events tho, that wont change
Saw an event where they had wrestling, didn’t like that. ALOT of technique in wrestling. Think it was sumo like rules.

I have to disagree, considering that virastuk won worlds last year, and zavicka’s won the IFSA equivalent of wsm this year. Mariusz is among the best, no doubt (although we dont know EXACTLY how good thanks to this absurd split … but thats a whole other thread) but it seems he’s more the exception to the rule.
zavickas isnt ubeleivably huge at 291…hes pretty athletic too. your example just further supports my point. the events have changed a bit and guys dont have to be 300 plus to dominate the field
but my original point was that i dont think that type of bicep work is neccesary at all for a strongman. in fact i think its quite stupid. maybe thats the reason magnus has had so many injuries of late, because he has developed weak links from working certain muscle groups too much.
technique and general fitness goes alot longer than absolute strength does when it comes to strongman. just ask son of strongman judge, i believe the name is heglund?..he only weighed 240 or so and did ok because he practiced the individual events and had great technique. if he ever fit into a 280-290lb frame hed do awesome
i workout with some strongmen that are trying to lose a few just to increase general fitness and cardiovascular strength. look at the last very good american strongman, i believe it was johnny perry? correct me if im wrong on sp or name, but he weighed way over 300, closer to 4 and eventually he had a stroke…dont be so quick to blame drugs, i doubt perry would have died at 270-280…perry was great at fingal fingers because he was so tall and good at pressing, its too bad we lost him…he could have brought the tittle back to the us

Didn’t he die of a cocian OD?

Yes. His heart failed in his sleep due to a pretty massive cocaine dose. Blaming his weight for his death is absurd.
There’s very good reason for doing a lot of bicep work for strongman. What group of muscles do you think stabilizes the elbow joint in events like conan’s wheel, shield carry, stones, etc? Magnus tore his bicep the first time because he wasn’t prepared for how heavy the farmer’s walk was. After the first tear, later tears are fairly common. I’d say he’s doing well not to rip it apart every contest given that strongman is starting to get heavy again.
nbutka, Magnus trains everything hard. He’s not a beach muscle guy. Ask him about the entirety of his program before you criticize him for doing too many curls.
Oh, and it’s Gregor Edmunds you’re thinking of. He’s doing Highland games contests now.

Zydrunas at 290?? Where are you getting your info from, he’s closer to 390 than he is to 290…
I agree with the poster who said that Magnus is probably curling for injury prevention. I have no idea how many reps he’s using but I wouldnt be surprised if he’s trying to strengthen the tendons.
Other than that, I’m not sure I understand your post? You mention Edmunds, the ref’s son, but then say he’d have done even better had he been bigger. Then you mention Johnny Perry as the last very good american strongman, and he was a truly MASSIVE individual. I dont know his weight, but from pics of him standing next to other strongmen, he wasn’t giving away anything in the size department.
Certainly size for size’s sake isn’t going to guarantee you a win; look at glenn ross. I remember Kaz saying one time (i think the 2003) that Glenn Ross was the strongest man in the world when you dont have to move your feet, and i didnt get the impression that he meant it as a slight.
What about Jesse Marunde wasn’t he second this year?
400+ curl? Are you kidding me! That’s nothing.
He has the ability to lift over 100 tons. His power for all practical purposes is limitless.
As a matter of fact he once actually lifted a cargo freighter weighing 30,000 tons 50 feet into the air. From a distance of 300 feet away!
Please, 400+ curl, lol.
But then again if we all had the ability to project or manipulate any form of energy that is related to magnetism we would all be able to concieve such displays of power.
Wait a minute, we’re not talking about Eric Magnus here are we?
…and away I go…
Yeah, Marunde was second. At least in the one I saw from China.
There was also some giant dude–nearly 400 lbs from Canada. Never saw I guy so thick in my life.
Surprised I didn’t see Vince McMahon in the audience, recruiting.
Mariusz is awesome. They have his “typical” workouts on his website. They seem pretty realistic. Morning is weights. Afternoon/evening is strongman stuff.
