Love for Squats Comes and Goes

You’ve summed it up pretty well there. I can’t even delude myself into believing that anything I do for myself in training is “good for me”. That ship sailed a while back, haha.

It’s basically the difference between the training at, say Metroflex gym, versus the training at Lifetime Fitness. Goals at the former are more clearly defined, and less ‘health’ oriented. Goals at the latter are essentially the opposite.
As the risk of digging myself a hole, I didn’t say, and don’t believe, training should always be health-oriented. Just that I often try to have an underlying element of health and (excuse the often-misused term) functional performance.

This whole thread began discussing squats in particular, and I do believe that people should do some kind of squat on a regular basis, for hip/ankle health, for general daily function, and for lower body and total body-integrated strength.

But I’d also say band pull-aparts fall into the “pay attention to health” category. So does avoiding blatant muscle discrepancies. Like that hypothetical dude who’s 200 pounds, benches 275 and squats 185. Unless he was a competitive bench-only powerlifter, I’d tell that guy his programming needs serious adjustment ASAP.

But again, once a lifter starts competing or we start talking sport-specific, the lines for what should and shouldn’t be prioritized get blurrier and blurrier, especially the higher level one competes at. You’ve got Dave Tate on one end of the spectrum with his resume of injuries in the name of a total, there’s Eric Cressey on the other end with his pro athletes and the steps he takes to keep his major league baseball players healthy, and there’s plenty of guys inbetween.

Depends on if the lifter reads that tagline and emphasizes the word ‘intelligent’ or emphasizes ‘relentless’. I kid, I kid.

Still agreed, no doubt. Not trying to convert anyone, just discussing the point.

For decades my leg work used to consist entirely of squats and deadlifts with the occasional set of lunges thrown in as assistance.

After I hurt my back I had to give up all loading on my spine until the discs heal. My leg routine switched to just walking lunges and leg extensions and curls.

I thought I was just going to minimize the atrophy by doing lunges, and instead my legs actually got bigger.

I drank the “squats and deads” cool-aid and limited my progress by doing so.

Lunges are such a brutal way to train the legs that tend to go unnoticed. Same with sled dragging. The absolute worst leg pump I’ve ever gotten in my life has been twice in a strongman comp after a sled drag.

I just have the TDS/New York Barbells model. Very barebones, but gets the job done. I tried out an Elitefts one once and it was awesome. I’m sure the Rogue one is slick too.
Looks like elitefts just put the bar up for sale for $299 with free shipping.

If anyone is on the fence, this is the time to grab an awesome piece of equipment for a ridiculous deal.

yes it was the back squat as you presumed chris, but I should’ve been more detailed and that would narrow down the topic greatly. No one should deny a hip hinge exercise in some modality.

So is it your opinion that a posterior chain movement (say deadlifts) is enough? Just wondering. This only applies if by squat you mean “the general squat movement pattern.”
Enough for what?

The issue I take with any statement regarding “everyone should do X” is that it presupposes a false hypothetical imperative. Unless we know what a trainee’s goals are, we cannot say what should and should not be done.
Enough for training your body… your legs specifically.

I’m glad Chris typed out what I think because it should be obvious UNLESS another reason is given.

We will have to agree to disagree on that point being obvious. I have never operated under that hypothetical imperative before.

If the goal is vague enough to be simply “train the legs”, squats absolutely aren’t necessary. Sled work would go far, as would lunges, yoke walks, carries, stone loading, extensions, GHR, etc.

Push: Any reason you don’t use a lead chain? I’ve never gotten much out of that set-up myself.

Thanks for the heads up Pwnisher. I loved this thing when I had access to one, and I have been waiting for THE deal to come along to get it. No tax, no shipping… 299 out the door. I dont ever seen it being better than that.

I hope my kids like it because I’ll be leaving it to them in the will.

Awesome man. I’m actually jealous of you for getting such a great deal, haha. This bar changed my life.
