In an effort to increase my calorie intake, I’ve started drinking a half a gallon of 2% milk everyday along with all my other food of course.
Is there any reason why this would be a bad idea? I can already tell my digestive system is getting a good run for its money. I’m farting all over the place, I’m sure the people in my office area appreciate it a whole lot. Will my body get used to the increase in milk and overcome the gassiness, or is it just something I’m going to have to deal with while consuming so much milk in a day?
Your body should learn to deal with it, in at most a week or two. The enzymes in your gut that break down lactose are inducible, meaning that the more lactose you take in, the more of those enzymes your body makes, and the more lactose you can handle. Just takes a couple days for your body to catch up.
Quick science explanation if you care: lactose (the main sugar in milk) is actually make up of two smaller sugars stuck together. In order to digest and absorb lactose, your body has to split it into its component parts. When you add a bunch of lactose to your diet, your body can’t keep up with splitting it, so you end up with a bunch of lactose in your lower intestines. The bacteria there go wild with all that sugar floating around, and you end up with gas.

Heh, thanks for the explanation, it’s always good to understand why the body does what it does. Hopefully like you said, my body will adjust to the increase in lactose and I’ll stop ripping it up so much.
I mean, I don’t mind, but it’s hard to hang out with a girl if I gotta fart every 10 minutes and I’m sure the people in the office could do without the strong odor.

I’ve routinely consumed a full gallon of whole milk every day.
People ALWAYS question whether or not I’m telling the truth because apparently it’s hard to believe.
I have to tell them how many people routinely drink more than a gallon of beer on the weekends in just a few hours.
Unless you are drinking whole milk you are waisting your time. No your body will not get use to it if you are having problems already. As stated above eating live culture yogurt will help.
Is the calorie difference between whole and 2% that much? Whole milk seems more filling too. I guess I could bump it up to whole milk. One gallon of milk in a day is quite the feet. I would assume that I’ll be farting just as much on whole milk as I do on 2%.
Try drinking raw milk. Better still, get some kefir grains and make kefir with the raw milk. It’s easy to do. THAT should make it MUCH more digestible and decrease your social stress (the flatulence).
Ive been drinking a gallon of 1% milk every day for the past 2 months. I do not have bad gas, I do not have increased acne. The calories for a gallon go like this:
Whole = ~ 2000cal and 280 grams of fat
2% = ~ 1800cal and 120g of fat
1% = ~ 1600cal and 50g of fat
skim = ~ 1300 and 0g of fat
As you can see the calorie difference correlates with the fat %. The protien content is the same for all of them however ~130g.
I did not have any problems with gas at the beginning. Evidently some people’s bodies are more efficient at digesting lactose than others.
I recommend a gallon of 1% each day, however any of them would be fine. I would not drink a whole gallon of skim milk though since it doesnt have the fat needed for slow digestion. Mark rippetoe also recommends 1 gallon of milk each day.

Good advice so far. Keep at it and your body will make the adjustment. I was barely able to handle more than 6oz at a time when I started back up with milk, but months later and I can handle 1/2 gallon daily with no problems.
Personally I use 1% milk (I prefer coconut oil as a saturated fat source) and wish I could afford raw milk.
Look, farting is not just a funny noise your body makes to amuse you. It means you aren’t digesting the stuff. Raw milk has the enzymes that pasteurized doesn’t.
Now, if you can’t afford raw milk, then at least put kefir grains in your milk which will ferment it and make it more digestible. Kefir grains are cheap and you can often get them FREE…and once you have a batch of them, you never need to purchase them again.
Are these grains things you actually eat while drinking the milk? Or you just let them sit in the milk and let them do their thing and then drink the milk? What’s the process? how long does it take? etc. etc.
I’ve never heard of kefir grains, and I don’t know where I would get raw milk, besides from milking a cow, which I don’t have.
I remember the milk issue coming up in my health and wellness class and I told them I drink around 1/2 a gallon of milk a day and they all flipped shit and said I was going to get heart disease and all this other shit.
lol, then after class the teacher took me over to the side and kinda laughed at them and said it was fine.
