Losthog—2018 First year

Nice OH mate, looks like I need to up my game.

I think you would have had that rep if you had a good rack position and had more practice with push-pressing.

For building mobility for the clean-grip position, I’d recommend that you practice getting into the position with an empty bar and hold it for some time. I’ve personally found it very helpful to go from the clean grip to a press grip(or w.e. it’s called). It’s why I personally like cleaning the bar off the floor for all my press attempts- things feel tighter and I think I automatically get my elbow into better position after cleaning it as opposed to unracking the bar. I try to unrack with a clean grip, but I’ve found a big difference between catching the bar vs unracking the bar.

I’m sure Destrength would know a lot about building a good clean grip, so you could go ask him as well.

I’m loving the push press PR. I literally just posted about how I’m not doing any OHP stuff as a main lift, but seeing this makes me want to. Awesome PR! Congratulations my dude

Bloody solid effort mate, it’s within reach.

The good news with your push press is that your numbers will go up just by practicing the lift. Your technique is raw. You’ll hit 2 plates pretty quick just through practice. You learn tricks like that a belt can help keep you from leaking power. Wrist straps can keep you from leaking power at the wrists. I use my straps on my max effort push presses. And, yes, the same straps with which I clean and deadlift. Wrap 'em tight and your wrists can’t move.

So on Thursday I worked front squat up to a 205 for 5 reps did my volume work at 185 and dynamic effort at 245 + green bands. I’ve been at camp since then and will be through Sunday pm. I’ll miss my Bench day all together. (Booo).

All good. I’ve swam, and played with the kids diet has been terrible. Tomorrow is the last day here the. Monday I am back on the program.

It appears you’re buying equipment for the school gym. Have you talked to whomever is in charge of equipment purchases to see if they’ll buy your toys for you?

Sorry this is my equipment and not for use by school employees or attendees. :joy:.
Yeah we have a budget to purchase new stuff. Currently I’m working on getting us new power racks and getting away from the crappy bench/ squat set ups we currently have. The guy in charge of all that is listening, but with a small budget it is difficult to spend over half of it on a single power rack but he is almost convienced. He is letting me do more with the weight room and planning training for the kids. In the past it has always been his baby and old Coaches don’t like to change what they have always done…baby steps.

I did let the kids use the SSB the other day and they were like “this doesn’t feel right it’s harder”. I did get them to take the manta rays off the bars and go naked bar squats (which is a first for the program 8th-12th). We have kids in the 12th grade who have never naked bar squatted. I taught this group of 8th graders how to position the bar, and when the manta ray was on the bar they would rip it off and say that is for pussys I don’t need that thing.

I haven’t researched the actual financial cost, but once upon a time I was eyeballing a DIY wooden rack.

You or some other coaches might have some free time over the summer. Maybe this is more cost effective? That thing looks like a beast.

06/25/2018— Near Death Lift day

In:7
Out:7

Warmup:
Band stuff, prowler, mountain climbers, body lunges, body squats, jump rope.

Crossgrove bar complex 5 reps with bar

ME: 5rm snatch grip dead lift
Giant: KBS x5/ / HKRx5
135x5
185x5
225x5
275x5 (all good to here)
315x5 (strapped up these were hard)
365x5 (wtf was I thinking felt like death)

V: 295x12 (puked), 295x10 (puked again)
Long rest, 295x10 (pure will power)

DE: squats reset to 50%. Decided to do 50% bar weight plus bands for this reset!
155 bar weight +green bands (80-100 at lockout. Around 225-255 at lockout…
X3 EMOM 10 min. Found a second wind!)

Accessory: (debated none but did some)

SSB walking lunges: 30-40 reps
BB glute bridge: 155x10x3

Called it… felt much better than the death lifts.

At one point during this workout my soul left me and I was on the verge of dying. I grabbed the elevating spirit by the ankle and forced it back into my flesh. Once it’s position was secured I finished the deadlifts and reracked the weights hoping it wouldn’t run out of my ears before I could do the DE squats. The de reset to 50% bar weight plus bands was not looking like such a good idea. So I did it anyway. The first 3 sets were muscle memory. I loosened up recovered some and crushed the dynamic sets. My lungs still feel raw and exposed from today. The iron may win in the end, but I will stain it with my blood, sweat, and tears before it wins. Bring it on!!!

If your struggling (like most schools) with finance, maybe build a rack or 2, it would be an awesome metalwork project for them. I made my first rack out of square steel tube, a shit load of bolts and some pergola brackets.
