Looters

The President just said that there are 78,000 people in shelters.

I realize that I am as guilty as the next guy of pointless fighting, so I really don’t have much room to talk.

But -

There is a time and a place for fighting about race and politics. There is also a time and a place for everyone to lay down their differences and work together. Now is one of those times.

Donate. Help. Do something. We can all fight about this later.

And I absolutely agree. My wife and I have made multiple donations to several charities. I have also given to someone I know personally that is going there to do whatever they can do to make a difference.

Donate. Help. Do something. Great advice and I hope everyone that is able will follow it.

As someone who evacuated from New Orleans, I am disgusted at the looting that is going on. But the truth is most of the stuff being looted will be lost to the rising water anyway because no one is going to be able to evacuate with their new plasma screen TV. But what I am really pissed off at is people shooting at police officers and people acting as cops pulling people over and then robbing them. That is what I find to be real disturbing.

Zeb,

Does that mean you are going to focus your time on Elk now instead of me? Nobody gives a rats ass if you are offended by what people are saying around here.

Stop asking people to be so politically correct already.

Veg,

Solid post! You make some very good points and yeah, that would be a good way to deal with his perception of the issues at hand.

Elk,

Relax man, you are letting these folks get under your skin. That’s the whole reason they are in the forums, not to actually discuss anything!

This is a horrible tragedy, and I’m deeply saddened.

As far as the looting goes, though, I really hope that as the water recedes a lot of bodies are found trapped under 50" plasmas and unopened computer boxes.

I’m a white man myself, and I can squarely admit that most serial killers are white men; yet you rely on the flimsiest of strawmen when I point out verifiable facts that show that blacks commit a disproportionate percentage of violent crime.
A fact cannot be ‘racist’. It can only be a fact.
Strawman? What fucking strawman was thrown out? I said I don’t care. That isn’t a “strawman” it is the truth.

Vegita, that was a very good post. I am working on my donation now and also a way to get more people involved. I heard the Astrodome in Houston is being used as a refugee shelter. If we don’t help these people out, then there is no room to bitch about the circumstances.

This was the newsletter that Charles sent out to our list today and the responce is insane- Charles is getting emails back from folks saying ’ I gave $5000 instead of $5." and other amazing donations. Charles felt it was a responsibility to send this out to our list and he is encouraging his peers to do the same.-Julianne

Hey Team,

BE A HERO: 5 MINUTES, 5 DOLLARS

I’ve been just stunned and horrified over the last few days watching
television coverage of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of New Orleans
and the surrounding gulf region.

The aftermath of this storm is both massive and devastating, leaving
hundreds of thousands of people homeless and in dire need of help.

I know that many people who would like to help don’t simply because
either a) they think their small contribution won’t really add up to
much, or b) they don’t know HOW to help.

LET’S MAKE SOMETHING BIG HAPPEN

On the first point, one thing that can help is to shift your focus
from the RESULT of your contribution to the ACT of contributing. If
more of us would see ourselves as charitable citizens, we could make
truly amazing changes to our World.

As to the issue of HOW to help, I’ve included a link from the TODAY
show website, which features clear, easy instructions on how you can
help the unfortunate victims of this epic storm. The link is below:

As a quick note, what is needed is money, not packages or volunteer
manpower. It’s simply a matter of making a donation with your credit
card.

LOOK WHAT WE CAN DO: QUICK AND PAINLESS

I’ve got many thousands of people on this list. If everyone who reads
this e-mail would simply take a few minutes to donate 5 dollars, our
little community here could generate over 100 thousand dollars in aid
for people who have no water, no food, no toilet paper, no job, no
hope.

PLEASE spend just a few minutes to make your $5 donation, NOW!

AFTER YOU DONATE, WRITE ME BACK

PS:After you make your $5 donation, please reply to thise-mail with the
phrase “I DONATED $5” in the subject line. Then in a week or so, I’ll let
you know how we did!

PSS: LET’S SHOOT FOR $100,000!!! This is SOOOO easy! DO IT NOW!

Thanks everyone, now get over to that website and be a hero! I’ll
write back shortly and let you know how we did…

IMAGINE HOW GREAT YOU’LL FEEL WHEN YOU GET AN E-MAIL FROM
ME THAT SAYS “We raised over $100,000!!!”

“Hey pot…”

“This is kettle…”

“you’re black”

It’s easy to get wrapped up into this discussion, and utilize the luxury of basic needs and saftety to engage in heated debate while perched high in our Colorado Mountains or in the flats of West Texas, far from any environmental hazards besides heat. (at the moment anyway)

But damn, lay down the arms for at least one thread and contribute something worthwhile. I can’t be as eloquent as Vroom or Vegita, but a difference can be made here, by us, to help out some people who are in a tight jam and have no real relief in sight.

I’m more than likely going to be leaving the safe and sunny confines of Southern Cali and getting sent down there and work with the miriad of public health issues that will arise in the upcoming weeks. So this whole situation feels more real to me I guess.

The looting situation sucks, there is no easy answer, and far be it from me to aim a judgemental eye at the people doing it. These are some scary times for people who used to have homes, lives, and property.

Shit if I were in that situation I have no idea what I would do, especially if it meant getting a leg up to fucking survive. We’re going to see the human animal at their very best, and their very worst. It’s a drag that economic status and pure luck are the only things separating the two, but that’s the way it is and we have to deal with it.

Keep those victims in your thoughts, it could totally be one of us on any given day. Hell, we here in Socal thought the only thing we had to worry about was an earthquake until the fall of '03 when the brush fires took over 250,000 acres adn millions of dollars in property in SD county alone. Hell, now I’m just babbling, but I submit that we keep the politics and all that crap out of the discussion and come together on this.

Don’t get glasses when you need them, dental care, books, etc. cause the money aint there. Make sure your male role models are crooks and thugs and hoods. Be sure that any potential you have for a better life is ground the fuck out of you over time.

Then you can look around and call other people animals if you still want to.

Excuses are like assholes. Everyones got one, & they all stink. These people are lower than animals. An animal does what it does with no concept of right and wrong. These assholes know they are doing wrong and do it anyway. Shooting them will solve one problem: it’ll cut back on repeat offenders.

Red dog there is no excuse for people to act the way they are in New Orleans. But if you want a little insight into someone?s mind that would act that certain way I think tinman gave a fair point of view

While a fact may be a fact, it can be used to promote things, including racism.

Hiding behind “it’s a fact” or “it’s the truth” will get you nowhere…

I’m not trying to excuse idiots stealing TV’s and other non-essential stuff…

but, I wonder if I would try and steal food and water from a grocery store if I was in these peoples situation…

would that make me a fuckin animal?
Turn on the news buddy, they show them stealing TV’s, DVD players, etc…

The real odd or should I say idiotic thing is that most of these people have no homes now to hide their newly acquired treasure. So they just run the streets with their new TV, but no place to put it. Idiots!

That’s right, don’t confuse us with the facts. We just care about perception. The truth is irrelevant.

Nice!

I get a real kick out of weight lifters and body builders subscribing to the theory that looters are “created” by bad health, parentage and sociology . . .

Give me a break.

After all, if anybody understands the concept of free will and the concept of improving oneself, it’s the guy who spends several hours each week pushing iron.

Lowlife, looting scum are people who make a life choice just like we all do.

Making excuses and looking for “reasons” why they do what they do simply empowers their thievery. They just laugh at you whiny excuse-makers and steal your stuff wheen you’re not looking.

Rack the shotgun! String out the rope! Shoot and hang a few. That sets a standard of individual behavior that leads to acceptable social behavior.

I think we need a new thread:

Who Believes… that someone deserves to die for stealing a TV set.

There is no commerce of any sort in New Orleans and no running water. Because of this there is no way to get food and water and baby forumula etc. Also, the very few people actually left in the city are those too poor to escape before the flooding. I’m not suprised some TV’s and such are being stolen as well but the food and water thing is totally acceptable.

Also keep in mind most of these people have lost everything they owned, their TV’s their furniture, their very homes, their jobs, etc. So by all means, shoot desperate people trying to survive and barring that shoot the ones who are trying to recover some tiny fraction of what they have lost. It’s the christian thing to do.

They are not recovering what they lost, they are stealing. So if my house burns down, it’s ok for me to steal from my neighbor? That’s a load of crap.

So the fuck what? OMG someone is stealing something that is going to be destroyed by the Hurricane!! some of you sound like you’ve been castrated

Not unless the FSM wants them to.

Agreed. People are dying in this and we get to hear about how many of you would grab a shot gun to stop someone from stealing a tv in these conditions? How many of you ready to grab guns for something this idiotic have actually donated anything to this situation already? Please tell me you are willing to kill people only after you have even attempted to save some.

Most of the people in this country have NEVER experienced anything close to this. It must be nice to sit by huge televisions in air conditioned numbness discussing how the world should act when life as they know it stops. 80% of that city has no electricity while dead bodies can be found in the streets floating right next to the people wading in it. Many of those people don’t even know the situation they are in because, unlike you, they don’t have cable anymore…or lights…or hot meals…or water…or obviously even baby diapers.

I would love to see how self righteous everyone would be in these same conditions. Talk is cheap.
