I also ritually make pies and pizzas from scratch every March 14th and invite all my friends over for dinner to celebrate Pi(e) Day. 3/14 = 3.14159265 = perfect excuse to celebrate, in my book.

Haha, yeah, there is a reason I choose not to wear my glasses most of the time. I grew my hair out specifically because people at work all called me Velma. Whooo, glad I outgrew that nickname!

Well, I’m no math guru, but I’m pretty tilde isn’t a math symbol for “multiplied by infinity” (maybe HH can confirm this).
Now, it may be a pop shorthand notation to describe infinitely repetitive chains, but in the scientific community one would more likely use square brackets with an n (or infinity) subscript. An infinite string of y’s isn’t useful in any other nerdy domain I can think of. The programming scene has no recurrent need for theoretically infinite strings to warrant allocating a keyboard-accessible special character for it, seeing how scarce they are.
In all honesty, I’m inclined to believe that it originated and is primarily used among IMers, SMSers and whatever kids spend their time doing these days. Of course, I could be wrong.
Try not to take any of what I wrote here personally. It just happens that I like tinkering with machines for fun and got frustrated when I failed to decipher that “WOW!~!” despite spending many minutes on it.
