Lonnie's Log: The Dan John Experiments (And Beyond)

If your weight was trending down already and you didn’t change anything really, I suspect you will see the progress materialize soon enough. I was at 193 for 3 weeks… not gonna lie it was starting to make me a little frustrated so I totally get where you’re coming from.

Maybe consider a single day of a fasting or low carb to drain some water/food weight and “reveal” your true weight?

This is so big. As much as we like to believe otherwise, the body doesn’t change in a fixed, predictable and linear pattern, no matter how many of the variables we try to control. BUT, it DOES respond to trends WITH trends, and will EVENTUALLY relent. It doesn’t like change, but it HAS to at one point. And so we can have a 3 week stall followed by a significant drop out of nowhere.

It’s why I gave up on the scale. It tells a bad story.

Nope. Lift, cardio, diet. I’m really going to try to hold steady until things move. I’m also already relatively low cardio. I’m hungry, very, so I assume it’s working. I’m actually going to be on vacation next week, so I’ll probably gain. But I’m planning not to freak out about that, too. As best I can, anyway. I think I’ve been too reactive in the past, letting it mess with me. I have pants that fit now that didn’t before, so “be cool” is my plan.

Clothes fitting is another metric for sure! That tells me that your plan is working, and something else is “faking” your body weight not dropping. Keep it up!

Oh yeah another thing women have to contend with is their cycle. My wife can literally gain like 5-7 pounds on it and it can mess with her head so badly

This is a typo - I’m low carb. Medium cardio haha.

But I’ve come to announce that my scale emergency is over.

Haha. Good week for both of us

I keep forgetting to take a progress photo under the same conditions but here’s a 15lb down bathroom mirror selfie

I will be unleashing my secret fat burning weapon heading into the second half of the T Ransformation 2024…I’ve always wanted to get one of these haha

Ugh, had a front loaded work week that ended up with me getting whatever virus is going around my area and I was laid out for the next 3 days I had off

On the bright side I got down to 186 for the first time so that’s a total of 20 pounds down since my highest scale reading

Doing some light work tonight to get back into the swing of things and hope to back to 100% on Monday

Okay at the start of the T-ransformation I said my goal was 185 and set a “stretch goal” of 175… and the scale this week was 183. And given there’s damn near two months left I think 175 is quite doable

Highest scale weight before I started was 206 so that’ll give me about 30 pounds down, which seemed a bit crazy at the start but now seems inevitable

The “path to victory” is quite clear as I still haven’t quite cut out all the treats (it’s not much but there’s definitely room to cut some cals out there) and I’m only doing 3 short cardio sessions a week still… so there’s pleeeenty of room to go up on that

I’m pretty interested and excited to see how this plays out because I definitely did not have 30 pounds as a sure thing starting this challenge

Good job! I’m meeting my expectations, too, which is…nice. :slightly_smiling_face:

Okay T-Ransformation 2024 is in the books. Here are some thoughts and a look forward

Part 1 - The Transformation

  • My regular goal was 185 and my “stretch goal”, as they are known in the crowd funding world, was to hit 175 from a top of 206 … And I got there. The last few weeks were weird with the weight fluctuations but eventually the scale gave in and I hit the numbers I was looking for. Damn if that last pound didnt take 3 weeks and hours and hours of extra cardio though

  • I was quite pleased with this years T-ransformation from a big picture perspective… Shedding 30lbs sounds like a daunting task but for some reason this year it was rather (dare I say) effortless. I think I’ve been “dieting” for so long that my sense of hunger and fullness has kind of been broken in some weird way and outside of really, really extreme circumstances I just dont get those sensations any more. I just eat the amount of calories I want and any sense of my body wanting more food just doesnt really exist.

  • When I competed back in 2012 (!!! holy shit its been more than 10 years) I got down to 159! It is a bit insane thinking Im damn near 20lbs away from that, but looking at these pictures theres still lots of fat to trim off from the legs and love handles etc… “The juice aint worth the squeeze” though as they say, and my wife would kill me if I got down into her neck of the woods weight wise haha

  • Avoiding Peanut Butter probably accounts for 80% of my weight loss haha

Part 2 - Looking Forward (The Dan John Experiments Continue!)

  • @T3hPwnisher talked me into buying Dan Johns Armor Building book, so it looks like the Dan John Experiments will be continuing! For those not in the know its a kettlebell heavy training plan that revolves around lots of overhead pressing and something known as the “Armor Building Complex” (2 cleans,1press,3front squats holding 2KBs at the same time) - I also bought 2 extra KB’s to accommodate the program so Im basically ready to go when those get delivered

  • Ive read the program and for the most part intend to follow it as laid out… buuuuuut I also might add in a small Easy Strength section in the beginning of each workout just to keep that element in, and maybe a small section at the end for “detail work” like pushups or curls or something. Who knows I kind of like to think Im a bit more resilient than the “mass market” crowd DJ can write for and nothing about the workload of the ABC scares me in the slightest so I dont think 10 minutes of light strength work should cause any issues. @T3hPwnisher let me know if Im being an idiot though haha

  • Diet wise I just have to not be a complete moron and not go back to my eating from 5 months ago and gain 10 pounds of lard really quickly, I feel like I have a handle on this now

Excited as hell for you dude. You’re not being an idiot at all: Dan talks specifically about mixing in the program with Easy Strength (page 122) alongside adding in other work as necessary. Sure, the ES bit was for the barbell program, but those lessons still carryover. And page 94 talks exactly about the value of “mistakes” if we end up making them, so you’re really golden.

Thanks, I’m sure there’s lots of details I missed on first read, although the whole first 25 pages is talking about adding more of you want but to be careful kind of message

Gotta work for a few days in a row here then will start the program so that gives me a few days to read it a few more times

First workout ot ABC in the books, and I intentionally started light and that proved to be a good idea because after my almost week off towards the end of the cut my legs were not used to all the non-box-squatting

I can already feel the full body soreness setting in haha.

I ordered kettlebells to give me 2x35lb and 2x50lb and the goal by the end of the 8 weeks is to be able to do the 50s for 30 sets of The ABC EMOM style

I’ll see what kind of progress I can make towards using them for 3x2,3,5,10 but those sets of 10 may prove insurmountable

Current workout setup is:

-Easy strength portion - dead lifts, chin ups, ab wheel, push-ups (just to not totally neglect the pecs)

-ABC workout

-Loaded carry

Seems to be pretty complete there, will adjust as needed as I progress the next 8 weeks

Wow this leg soreness is way more than I was expecting. Yesterday I was sore from head to toe again but still so sore in the groin/hamstrings today I have to delay the workout until tomorrow

Dayum I thought the relatively low weight would save me but the time off squatting deep and the ass to grass nature of the squats got me

Do you have a sled? Could help with the soreness. Otherwise some stairs. Just something without an eccentric
