I’ve been sitting here and reading through this thread the last few days and I have to remark that I’ve noticed a few patterns to many of the posts:
- The most beloved thing about the south seems to be the food
- Racism in the south is generally believed to be non-existent or grossly overblown.
- The “south” isn’t really viewed as latitude thing - it’s seen as a culture thing.
Personally, from my experiences, the “south” doesn’t exist, if it ever really did, at least in the stereotypical sense. The idea that people are “generally nicer” in one area over another is your individual experience. In other words, if you wanna believe people are kinder in Georgia vs. Pennsylvania, go right ahead, but understand there is nothing to support that other than you want it to be true.
Racism is everywhere. Does the south get a bad rap in 2011? Yep - it sure does. Is that fair? No, if you grew up here - but there’s an old phrase “Can’t see the forest for the trees.” Open your mind to the idea that just maybe all these sterotypes exist for a reason. If being more accepted means it’s non-existent, so be it.
Doesn’t everyone want to be part of the “nice” people? I’ve noticed a few brave souls raise their hands and say proudly, “I’m from the North - you know - one of the asshole states - and I’m proud of it.” But not too many. Everybody wants to be special and from the cool place. The people I knew in “the angry north” were anything but that.
I miss where I grew up - b/c it’s where I grew up. It wasn’t special in any amazing way other than the fact that I lived there for 30 years. I knew every street and every resturant. My neighbors were kind people that waved hello and baked me cookies, just like yours. All the weird shit there was special b/c it was part of me. You miss RC cola and moon pies? Really? Well I miss Italian bread and visting the wineries on the Finger Lakes. Which one is better? Stop taking every possible opportunity to remind someone “you’re not one of us” and maybe they will stop trying to change things on you. <end rant - let the flames ensue>

Yep, a home sick yankee.
I like the forest for the trees quote and would apply it right back to your rude yankee statements. It’s not like north easterners run around looking for people to offend, it’s just their general pretense of “whaddaya lookin at?”.
RC Cola is for chumps but Dr. Pepper (Texas) and Coca-Cola (Georgia) are world wide favorites because they are delicious. Wine is good too and the south has wineries along with delicious colas. Anybody other than France claiming superior wine culture is nutty though. Moonpies were allright as a kid but you just can’t beat southern baking, my personal favs are Scrumptious Cake and Pecan Pie. Plus we do have lakes too, and oceans and swamps which are actually quite beautiful if you get back in one.
If you’se guys quit trying to make Texas or the Carolinas NY we probably wouldn’t have an attitude of “You don’t belong here”. But have some scrumptios cake anyways, we’ll win you over if you ever learn to truly relax, you uptight yankee

The best you got is name calling? Really? I confess myself disappointed.
You can try and twist my words into what ever your world view might be, but it still rings false. If you’d like to “one-off” every comment in a vain attempt at dismissal… well, I just expected more of you. I think you’re better than that. “You’se guys” really? Allow me to retort… nah, nah a boo boo…stick your head in doo doo. smh… C’mon let hold your purse this time - give it another swing.
Damn! Some one is angry today! My one offs matched your initial dismissal attempts point for point…
Didn’t mean to actually step in to a hornets nest. Oh how sweet it would be if the internet could convey tone.
FTR, I like my trips to the NE, even if the culture is a little different.
See - that’s you’re problem - you get fucking sweet and I can’t stay mad at you…
You suck - I was ready for some tusslin’…
I’m sweeter than a moon pie chased with an RC Cola.
But for real, I meant everything I said earlier. I can be meaner than a rattle snake too though that pretty much pertains to Texas and it’s chameleon like qualities allowing it to be the Southwest too.
Basically, in addition to my earlier response, your response only proves the uptight yankee stereotype.
Uptight here implies I’m not the demure southern belle… I where bitchy in SC like a badge of honor my friend. No doubt about.
You say this stuff, but I know you aren’t any different… I’ve read many of your other comments regarding the “clique” on the TK thread and interpreting that as exclusionary. No one likes people that behave that way.
And FTR - I LOVE my life here and I proudly tell anyone that. If you found yourself living in NY (let’s assume) you’d have a laundry list of crap you hate. But I’d be the last person telling you that your feelings are unfounded or trying to dismiss those things as nonexistent.
My only comment is I love my North, warts and all. And I love my South, warts and all. That’s why I wonder why everyone tries so hard to tell me my criticisms aren’t real. Embrace your flaws - be proud of the not so great stuff. Fuck - I swear at times it seems I’m more proud of SC than the people that grew up here. They try to hide their flaws like a crazy uncle under the stairs.
I have it on good authority Yankees eat infants. Embrace that. Why embrace what isn’t true?
I like how you went from “there is no proof that the south is nicer” to “stereotypes exist for a reason” and “the north isn’t not nice” to “embrace your flaws”.
Just say’n.
Most of this stuff in the thread has been in good humor. No reason to get defensive and serious.
Sweet Twin My Dear,
Your logic can be applied to any stereotype. A stereotype is a stereotype.
Most Sincere And Sweetest Regards,
