I’ve been sitting here and reading through this thread the last few days and I have to remark that I’ve noticed a few patterns to many of the posts:

 1. The most beloved thing about the south seems to be the food
 2. Racism in the south is generally believed to be non-existent or grossly overblown.
 3. The “south” isn’t really viewed as latitude thing - it’s seen as a culture thing.

Personally, from my experiences, the “south” doesn’t exist, if it ever really did, at least in the stereotypical sense. The idea that people are “generally nicer” in one area over another is your individual experience. In other words, if you wanna believe people are kinder in Georgia vs. Pennsylvania, go right ahead, but understand there is nothing to support that other than you want it to be true.

Racism is everywhere. Does the south get a bad rap in 2011? Yep - it sure does. Is that fair? No, if you grew up here - but there’s an old phrase “Can’t see the forest for the trees.” Open your mind to the idea that just maybe all these sterotypes exist for a reason. If being more accepted means it’s non-existent, so be it.

Doesn’t everyone want to be part of the “nice” people? I’ve noticed a few brave souls raise their hands and say proudly, “I’m from the North - you know - one of the asshole states - and I’m proud of it.” But not too many. Everybody wants to be special and from the cool place. The people I knew in “the angry north” were anything but that.

I miss where I grew up - b/c it’s where I grew up. It wasn’t special in any amazing way other than the fact that I lived there for 30 years. I knew every street and every resturant. My neighbors were kind people that waved hello and baked me cookies, just like yours. All the weird shit there was special b/c it was part of me. You miss RC cola and moon pies? Really? Well I miss Italian bread and visting the wineries on the Finger Lakes. Which one is better? Stop taking every possible opportunity to remind someone “you’re not one of us” and maybe they will stop trying to change things on you. <end rant - let the flames ensue>

Yep, a home sick yankee.

I like the forest for the trees quote and would apply it right back to your rude yankee statements. It’s not like north easterners run around looking for people to offend, it’s just their general pretense of “whaddaya lookin at?”.

RC Cola is for chumps but Dr. Pepper (Texas) and Coca-Cola (Georgia) are world wide favorites because they are delicious. Wine is good too and the south has wineries along with delicious colas. Anybody other than France claiming superior wine culture is nutty though. Moonpies were allright as a kid but you just can’t beat southern baking, my personal favs are Scrumptious Cake and Pecan Pie. Plus we do have lakes too, and oceans and swamps which are actually quite beautiful if you get back in one.

If you’se guys quit trying to make Texas or the Carolinas NY we probably wouldn’t have an attitude of “You don’t belong here”. But have some scrumptios cake anyways, we’ll win you over if you ever learn to truly relax, you uptight yankee
The best you got is name calling? Really? I confess myself disappointed.

You can try and twist my words into what ever your world view might be, but it still rings false. If you’d like to “one-off” every comment in a vain attempt at dismissal… well, I just expected more of you. I think you’re better than that. “You’se guys” really? Allow me to retort… nah, nah a boo boo…stick your head in doo doo. smh… C’mon let hold your purse this time - give it another swing.
Damn! Some one is angry today! My one offs matched your initial dismissal attempts point for point…

Didn’t mean to actually step in to a hornets nest. Oh how sweet it would be if the internet could convey tone.

FTR, I like my trips to the NE, even if the culture is a little different.
See - that’s you’re problem - you get fucking sweet and I can’t stay mad at you…

You suck - I was ready for some tusslin’…
I’m sweeter than a moon pie chased with an RC Cola.

But for real, I meant everything I said earlier. I can be meaner than a rattle snake too though that pretty much pertains to Texas and it’s chameleon like qualities allowing it to be the Southwest too.

Basically, in addition to my earlier response, your response only proves the uptight yankee stereotype.

Uptight here implies I’m not the demure southern belle… I where bitchy in SC like a badge of honor my friend. No doubt about.

You say this stuff, but I know you aren’t any different… I’ve read many of your other comments regarding the “clique” on the TK thread and interpreting that as exclusionary. No one likes people that behave that way.

And FTR - I LOVE my life here and I proudly tell anyone that. If you found yourself living in NY (let’s assume) you’d have a laundry list of crap you hate. But I’d be the last person telling you that your feelings are unfounded or trying to dismiss those things as nonexistent.

My only comment is I love my North, warts and all. And I love my South, warts and all. That’s why I wonder why everyone tries so hard to tell me my criticisms aren’t real. Embrace your flaws - be proud of the not so great stuff. Fuck - I swear at times it seems I’m more proud of SC than the people that grew up here. They try to hide their flaws like a crazy uncle under the stairs.

I have it on good authority Yankees eat infants. Embrace that. Why embrace what isn’t true?

I like how you went from “there is no proof that the south is nicer” to “stereotypes exist for a reason” and “the north isn’t not nice” to “embrace your flaws”.

Just say’n.

Most of this stuff in the thread has been in good humor. No reason to get defensive and serious.

This is what I have seen living in several states in the South, raised in Texas, and spent most of the past decade in the Northeast.

Food in NE generally blows. There are some good restaurants just the regional fare sucks. The best BBQ “world famous” joint around me I would describe as medium good, edible without risking being too disappointing, but I have done better on my $2 smoker in the back yard. Mexican food is unheard of.

NE people - start out gruff but can become nice, generally if they think you and them are up against some common enemy.

Southerners, SE - nice and sweet at first and will cut you down behind the woodshed or “outside” if you call their momma anything other than perfect. There is a whole lot more behind the smiles and manners in the South than outsiders expect.

South x southwest - just damn straight forward and helpful. I have described Oklahomaians as the following, they will go out in a tornado to drag you to safety but will call you an idiot for being out in the storm.

In Texas, expect everyone is carrying. A knife at minimum, and gun is as likely.

Of course these are generalizations and their are bad and nice people everywhere.

BTW, Pepsi Cola is from North Carolina.

Not really sure how to argue…

I don’t understand your second paragraph though, I’m not any different than what? Blame it on my dumb southern upbringing but then you misused “where” instead of wear. Which is funny because you said yankees are not bitchy but now you act like a bitchy yankee to upset southern sensibilities… and wonder why they don’t intermingle with you much. Personally, I like bitches, they are fun to poke and prod twice over.

The TK thing was just funny because they want it to be a private club on a public forum and evidently vote a “strong leader” to be “mean” to “outsiders” until they “leave”. I know I’m on the internet too but that actually made me lol. I instantly pictured a bunch of shy losers and the stereotypical net nerds. Maybe not what you are referring to?

Depends on what regional fare your talking about, Mexican and BBQ I get it, up here it sucks…

But your pizza, bagels and chinese are horrendous down south. I dont think you guys know what a Jewish Brisket is other than if it was in a BBQ. Corned Beef and Pastrami on rye…I wont take my chances down south on any NY Jewish fare, and us Jews are EVERYWHERE…While you may have us on Mexican fare, you cant hold a candle on our Puerto Rican and Dominican cuisine… all of which can be found on any working class neighborhood block not a fancy restaurant on the upper east side.

Oh and im NOT gonna love ANY of the FLAWS that other people say we have…

But we do eat infants, a good source of protein

Sweet Twin My Dear,

Your logic can be applied to any stereotype. A stereotype is a stereotype.

Most Sincere And Sweetest Regards,

I’m sorry - you are correct. Everything in the south is AWESOME and everywhere else sucks.

If you’d like to continue taking comments out of context and lacing them together to make a weak point - please feel free to continue. And I thing defensive is posting how I’m incorrect in ANY accessment that disagrees with yours.

Twin - get a grip. You’re getting sucked into a pissing contest.

I’ve lived here too and I can relate to what I think you are trying to say. However try and understand no matter what you say, no amount of logic or rational thought is going to convince anyone here of anything. You’re approaching this from the idea that these are people with misguided opinions. Not true. This is who they are. It’d be like me trying to convince you that you are not female. You call it like you see it and that is a big no - no south of the Manson-Nixon line. The doosh that commented on embracing things that don’t exist? Really? Fucking retard. You know why I love being here. B/C it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. You want to embrace something? Embrace the fact that you are one of the hillbillies trying to defend a couple hundred years of theft, rape, and murder as “non-existent”.

I’m far too attractive to be letting this stress me out! Haha!!

Peace…

I never said anything about the south being good or nice or the north being mean. I never even remotely mentioned any such thing.

There is no lacing them together. They were from the same conversation and are about as directly contradictory as possible. You are arguing against the stereotype that northerners are mean. Then you state that stereotypes are there for a reason, and you should embrace those flaws. What exactly was out of context?

I’m not exactly sure what you are accusing me of defending sense I took no side in anything. And I never made an “accessment” about anything.

I didn’t disagree with any point. I was just noting how blatantly contradictory your statements were. So much so, that I’m not entirely certain how you meant things.

I’m not arguing with you, you are arguing with you.

Oh and im NOT gonna love ANY of the FLAWS that other people say we have…

I am not in a major city, I am upstate. Some decent Italian food places, had better in Italy. Not a lot of ethnic food around.

There is a reason Tex-mex food has spawned many national chains.

BTW, the best Chinese food I have ever had was in Lido, Italy just round the corner from the beat pizza I have had, thin crust and it didn’t have a drop.of pizza sauce on it.

lol. Yeah, cause you are just so much more full of logic.

I love the argument tactic “logic and reason are one my side, if you disagree it’s because you just don’t get logic”.

My comment on embracing something that doesn’t exist was illustrating that things don’t need to be embraced for the sole reason they are a alleged flaw.

But what and how exactly did I embrace “a couple hundred years of theft, rape, and murder as “non-existent””?

You are right, logically I did say I support theft rape and murder. You are just too rational for me. You do understand that is an entirely irrational and illogical conclusion, right?

If you are really arguing you took the time to read through everything she wrote and had NO idea what she was saying, then I think we all know what the issue really is. Bad sterotypes exist about the south, and you my friend are just proving them true.

Next time I’m in the city we can go get a slice.

Looky there, North and South getting along…

If I were to give my opinion (instead of other people in this thread telling me what it is) I’d say there is some truth to everything. Mostly, I do agree that everyone wants to be proud of where they are from. The reason people in the south generally act like they do about being proud of it is because they are more constantly berated by TV and the news and public perception about bad things about the south.

I honestly don’t think people are really any better in any place over another. Mainly customs are just different. Saying “thank you” while telling someone off in your head is worse than not saying “thank you” while having a thankful heart. I don?t think people are that different.

I think another big issue in the perception between north and south is major cities. The south just plain doesn’t have many while the north’s reputation is dominated by them. I think one of the biggest differences in perception is due to more rural versus more urban populations.

For example New York state is lots of farm land and is conservative, but all anyone thinks of when you mention New York is the city.

I can tell you for a fact that the Atlanta proper residents are just as mean and grouchy as other big cities.

As for racism, again, I don’t think people are that different. I think population make up is what we are really talking about. The south has a lot more black people than the north does. Racial diversity is good and bad. It certainly causes problems, but I definitely take offense to being told where I’m from is racist by someone who live is a place where they are a 99.9% majority. A lot of people hate other people for a lot of dumb reasons all over the world, there is nothing uniquely southern about it.

And if atrocities of the past should color perception in the future, don’t forget the US flag flew over slavery for a lot longer than the confederate flag did, INCLUDING through the civil war. You would be far more up to date and recent reminding a modern day German about being a Nazi than a southerner about slavery.

It happened, it was bad, and no one alive did it. No American has any more claim to that history than anyone else.

As for me, I like saying and hearing please and thank you, I like the customs of courteously and friendliness, and I don’t like long cold winters, so I like where I live. Some people like other things. But I think most people think we are much more different than we are.
