Liver Enzymes - AST but not ALT Elevated

I did do a search on this in the forums; at least one post was here in supplementation. There is no obviously good place for it:

About three months ago, my blood work came back and my AST levels were high at 46. ALT was in the normal range. The AST was a jump from prior levels.

I lead an ultra-healthy lifestyle, careful about food and supplements, I get sleep. I’m 5’9" and a lean 155. No steroids.

I racked my brain to think of what it could be. I am (was) taking a supplement called Sytrinol, which works in the liver to help one’s lipid profile. Since it has liver activity, I stopped it. But honestly, I really couldn’t think of anything that had changed.

Did another set of bloodwork, same results. Besides dropping Sytrinol, I kept my diet even more strict. That’s pretty much it.

My other chemistries are normal or even really good. I feel great and am leaner than ever. I did read that AST is found in many tissues, ALT only in the liver, so now I’m wondering if the problem is elsewhere?

What else can I tell you? Family history of diabetes - I don’t have it but my glucose is high normal (bounces around 100). I have slightly worse kidney function than most, probably congenital, with my creatinine bouncing around the high end of normal (I did get this checked out by a nephrologist who did a bunch of tests and he said basically some parts of my kidney cortexes were much smaller/less dense than other people’s, too bad, it won’t hurt me, move along).

I work out about 10x per week, 5x weights, 5x other (gymnastics or dance). Supplements are largely vitamins, antioxidants, CLA, fish oil - standard stuff. Diet avoids high glycemic foods and trans fats. I eat my veggies.

I realize it is only slightly elevated, but it was the sudden jump…and continued new high level…that has me interested.

Any thoughts?

As you point out ASt is found in many tissues, including skeletal muscle. If you exercise, vigorously, then some AST may be released into your blood.

Fuck me.

And here I am worrying about my liver because of slightly elevated AST levels.

Anyway, ditching the alcohol for a while cannot be all bad.

Precisely. I found that by not exercising for several days before my blood test, my “liver enzyme” numbers were lower.

I don’t know guys… AST is a pretty good indicator of alcoholic liver damage… How were your ALT, ALP, and GGT levels?
