Lifting Weights on Chemo

Just saw an item on the news where they were talking about research into timing of chemo depending on someone’s body clock. Apparently in trials people have reported less side effects when taking their chemo overnight, their article said 'The whole body tries to run to the same internal time, but cancers do their own thing.

Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells, so researchers are trying to take advantage of cancer clocks by using chemotherapy when the cancer cells are dividing but cells in the rest of the body are not.’ Its called chronotherapy. There’s an article here:

Hopefully you’re be all done with it soon anyway & can get back to a treatment free life.[/quote]

Cheers for the link bro, always keen to check out reputable articles. They’re making constant advancements in cancer treatment. 20 years ago my outlook would be horrendous. As it is, by medical stats I fall around the 70% mark for non-recurrent survival. Which is not too bad!

Of course, the glory of lifting will pump that up to 100% haha.

Rest day today.

Lol

I don’t have any advice to give but let me just say that this log is nothing short of inspirational, for the attitude you bring to lifting is a living example of how it’s about what we are willing to do, not what we are constrained to.

Thanks bro, glad someone is enjoying my log! Not overly exciting in terms of weight lifted haha, but I’m doing my best.
I’m actually really pleased with the rate my strength is returning. I’m hoping to hit an all-time bench PR by Year’s Eve. That’s pretty much my lifting goal right now.

There are loads of ultra-focused and motivated people on this site, love the never-say-die vibe around here. Every other log seems to be someone persevering against injury, sickness, or battling their self-diagnosed poor genetics haha.

I’ve got all my limbs and the ability to use them, so I will do exactly that - simple maths.

Cheers

Cycle 3, Week 2, Day 3
15/05/14

Press
3 x 32.5kg
3 x 37.5
1 x 42.5
7 x 47.5 (amrap)

1 x 50
1 x 52.5
2 x 55 (amrap)

8 x 32.5
8 x 32.5
8 x 32.5

Bench Press
8 x 60kg
8 x 60
8 x 60

Dumbbell Side Delt Raise
12 x 7.5kg pair
12 x 7.5
12 x 7.5
8 x 7.5
8 x 7.5

Dumbbell Front Delt Raise
8 x 7.5kg pair
8 x 7.5
8 x 7.5
8 x 7.5
8 x 7.5

Very pleased to get a double at 55kg Press as this was my PR a few weeks ago. Pretty confident I could nail 60kg, just 20kg to go for an all-time PR haha. I’m tempted to adjust things next cycle to maybe a 5 x 10 assistance as I’d LOVE to hit a bodyweight OHP - something I have never managed before.

Decided to up the weight and lower the reps on my volume benching today, and felt truly ruined after the delt raises.

Handling this latest chemo cycle fine so far.

Oh and here’s a photo of how I set up my bench rows, which I love.

That’s a pretty sweet set-up. Does it get hard to breath when you push a set on those? I’m wondering if for that reason it might be a better high rep lighter weight exercise.

Not to the point where it causes any issues. I mean for 4-8 reps it’s not heavy enough to crush the diaphragm, and for low reps they’re over before you can notice the lack of breath anyway.

Mainly using it as a ME lift because I’m hammering the upper body since my incision makes ME dead / squat a very bad idea. Once I have my surgeon’s clearance, I will drop it back to being an accessory, likely a 5 x 10 arrangement. But I do not see him until August 5th so a while to go yet!

I definitely feel this is benefiting my bench press; feel pretty equal from front to back.

In the long-run I probably see something like:

Bench 531 sets and reps
CG Bench 5 x 10
Bench Row 5 x 10

Today is that depressing day when you realise your biceps are now a mere 15 inches. Haha!
I miss my old fat 17 inch ceps. I guess I should be pleased I’m at a much lower BF% though… likely 10-12 range I think, without proper testing.

79.4kg today. Still 182cm.

Cycle 3, Week 2, Day 4
16/05/14

Squat
3 x 60kg
3 x 70
3 x 80
3 x 85
3 x 90

Deadlift
3 x 60kg
3 x 70
3 x 80
3 x 85
3 x 90

Single Leg Calf Raise
10 x 12.5kg
10 x 12.5
10 x 12.5
10 x 12.5
10 x 12.5

Felt like junk this afternoon and came close to bailing on my lifting. But I really want to bully myself through this cycle without missing any days, so I got it done.
I didn’t feel like doing many sets so I just did a little 5 x 3 kinda thang. I’ve never liked volume on squats or deads, which may be why my all time PRs are only 375 and 500 haha.
Anyway, I am thinking about doing a 3x3, 3x5 or 5x5 for deads and squats and adding weight each week. Start rilla light, maybe a good way to reclaim what’s left of my leg strength. I don’t know, I guess all that really matters right now is lifting Something. But I like pondering anyway.

Thanks bro! Glad you enjoy reading it. I am very motivated to do the absolute best I can, even more so by the awesome comments I get on here. In a couple of years’ time I wish to be look back at this and feel proud of where I stand.

Also I think it’s awesome you did a competition in your late friend’s honour, I bet you did him proud.

Thanks man I’m feelin pretty positive about my progress. Seem to be regaining upper body strength relatively fast, starting to feel vaguely man-like again haha!

Heaps of people have been really awesome to me during my illness and recovery, but one thing that sticks out. During my operation and stay in hospital my old man flew in from another city and spent every day by my side. But, even while doing this, he also found time to build a massive fence in my backyard, knowing I’d wanted a dog for years but had been unable to as I couldn’t really afford to fence my house.

So yeah a few weeks after returning home I bought a little puppy, who is now 4 months old. I gotta say, having Ghost around has been amazing for my general level of happiness and the companionship he provides is worth his weight in gold. I love the fact it forces me to take responsibility for feeding and exercising him, meaning I need to leave the house and walk every day regardless of how I feel.

Of course, he’s a little prick as all hyperactive critters are haha, but I love him. Could never thank my Dad enough for making it possible for me to get Ghost.

I know everyone hates people who post a million photos of their pets on facebook, but never mind!

Awesome! Hard to tell, but is Ghost a Samoyed?
