Lifting Weights on Chemo

Definitely inspirational, following for sure.

Yeah, not really a Cowboys fan, but the format is interesting.

17/2/14
No training today as I have been hospitalised with dehydration. Apparently the two weeks of watery motions drained my fluids too much so I’m on a drip for the night.
Bright sides:
Got interviewed by a hot medical student.
They did an xray and found some distended bowel loops. This sucks but it’s better than not finding them! So I’m currently nil by mouth until they find a strategy to deal with them. I’d kill for a cheeseburger.
Fingers crossed I will be released tomorrow to continue week three.

Followed you over from your 5/3/1 question. You’re a beast man. Your resiliency is insane. But I’m a former Queenslander (still a Queenslander at heart), so I don’t know how i feel about that comment…

Keep fightin’, good luck.

Gotta do what you gotta do huh? It helps alleviate the side effects so I’d be a fool not to try.
Haha, I grew up in a Blues supporting household and part of that is cheering against the Broncos and now Cowboys at all times!
TBH just a tad bitter we haven’t won a series in a century or so

Still in hospital damn it.
Got some slightly shitty news from the oncology consultant today; my chemo nurse should have stopped my chemo pills early due to the constant diarrhea.
She didn’t, so now I have overdosed, dehydrated, and am suffering from chemo toxicity. This is also inflaming my gut and doing all kinds of cool stuff to me, so I am being kept in hospital probably until Friday. No eating allowed, just IV water and glucose, have to rest the bowels.
I’m frustrated by this, but don’t really blame my nurse because I have a habit of understating how I feel / trying to tough it out. I will learn from this.

Apparently chemo dosage is not an exact science, and though they go by bodyweight, it’s meant to be evaluated by side effects. IE, the constant digestive chaos indicated I was already fully dosed and should have stopped taking the pills.

Anyway, this log will be uneventful for a couple of days sorry, but fingers crossed Friday they will let me go home so I can continue :). Happy lifting til then!

21/2/14

I got released from hospital this evening :). I slept like shit the four nights I spent in the cancer ward, and I’ve been on liquid diet until this afternoon, so I’m pretty weak.
Now I am on a “low residue” diet for a few days, which I will be managing at home.

Really happy to be out. Back to my lifting tomorrow!

Back at it after recovering from the week in hospital

Side Effect Notes:
Pretty dizzy and shit after my days not allowed to eat, but I’ve been smashing lots of the food I’m allowed to get some energy back. BW down a couple of kg, but that’s not a big deal at this stage.
I’m on a “low reside” diet, which pretty much means no fruit, no veges except potatoes, only “white” carbs and as much meat and sugar as I like… fucked huh?
Just to make it less hard on my gut while the colitis clears

So, I went in for my chemo appointment and the consultant said my blood test results were terrible and I’m too sick to be given chemo this week. My kidneys are a mess and I am dehydrated again.
So, instead of chemo they chucked 2 litres of IV fluids in my veins and sent me home.
I have to get more blood tests Thursday; if they aren’t improving I will be hospitalised again. And then more blood tests Monday to see if it’s safe to give me chemo next Tuesday…
Oh the joys of needles! Haha.

You’ve got a great attitude mate, keep it up. All the best.

Cheers dude. I get pissed off at times, but really I am lucky to be here so I certainly shouldn’t complain! Hope your training is going well also

Man, this kidney / dehydration stuff has me pretty raped. Quite dizzy and weak, shallow breathing. It’s a bit frustrating as this isn’t even part of my chemo side effects haha. I get bloods done tomorrow and if my kidneys aren’t improving I will be hospitalised for a few days.
Fingers crossed I am on the mend!

I had yesterday off as I was feeling pretty much like death from this kidney damage. But today I was feeling healthier, and my gf was not here to stop me haha. Pretty happy with today’s session. Doing more reps every lifting day, so that is progress :).

Looking forward to Cycle 2.

Cycle 1 Rundown

Press
wk 1 30 x 9
wk 2 32.5 x 8
wk 3 35 x 6

Deadlift
wk 1 50 x 12
wk 2 52.5 x 16
wk 3 55 x 20

Bench
wk 1 35 x 16
wk 2 37.5 x 17
wk 3 37.5 x 20

Squat
wk 1 42.5 x 12
wk 2 45 x 15
wk 3 47.5 x 14

Bodyweight wk 1 76kg / wk 2 74kg / wk 3 76kg

I’ve decided I’m sick of being under 80kg - it feels like shit. Haha, I remember when I considered the “mark of man” to be 90kg!

So this cycle I’m going to try eating around a base of 700g of meat per day, just adding whatever carbs and fats I can tolerate.

Not at all worried about getting fat while on chemo; plus I’m very lean at the moment anyway. I need to get in 3000 calories per day according to my dietitian. Just kinda hard as I am on a very limited range of foods! But meat conquers all.

Also will be doing 5rm testing for calculating this coming cycle. My body is in a pretty confusing state so I want to get a solid baseline of where I’m at and what I need to do to get where I want to be.

Something that’s been lurking in my mind is going full bro with a bench-heavy routine. The compound lifts are the biggest mass builders. I am SEVERELY limited in squatting, deadlifting and even standing overhead pressing due to the weak abdomen; so I can’t do anything near muscular failure for these lifts. Bench is the only compound lift which isn’t particularly dangerous for me. So maybe I should add a second bench day in, to take advantage of the extra total kg I can move? I dunno, just rambling tbh.

Bright side, my breathing is improving and my Thursday bloods can’t have been too bad as they haven’t readmitted me to hospital :). So, I will assume the next chemo cycle starts in three days.

Happy lifting folk!

I’m subbed man; please keep updating.

Cheers for stopping in bro, I will certainly do that.

1/3/14

Today I simply worked up to something near a max effort set to calculate the next cycle from.

Bench
5 x 40kg
3 x 45
3 x 50
3 x 55
7 x 60 (est 1RM 75kg)

DB Chest Fly
15 x 10kg pair
15 x 10kg
15 x 10kg
15 x 10kg
15 x 10kg

DB Skullcrushers
15 x 7.5kg pair
15 x 7.5kg
15 x 7.5kg
15 x 7.5kg
15 x 7.5kg

I’m actually really happy with this; looking forward to slightly heavier benching in cycle 2.

2/3/14

Working up to a rough max effort for calculating deadlift this cycle.

Deadlift
5 x 50kg
5 x 55
3 x 60
3 x 70
3 x 80
5 x 90 (est 1RM 105kg)

WG Barbell Row
10 x 20kg
8 x 40
10 x 40
10 x 40
8 x 50

Hammer Curls
15 x 10kg pair
13 x 10
10 x 10
8 x 10
15 x 10

Deadlifting went well, I’m happy using this as my max for next cycle. 130kg shy of my best ever lift, but hey I gotta take what I can get!

Man I could really feel the pressure in my abdomen; it could be a long time before I am confident with this. I’ll have a chat with my surgeon about my concerns next time I have a check-up.

In retrospect, I will not bother re-testing squat or overhead press. I didn’t get many reps on press max sets so I am happy leaving it there. Squat has always been a shit lift for me, so the high reps may do me good. Also, this is the biggest pressure builder in my abdomen so I am happy just taking it really easy for now.

Also this cycle I will be including Bench Barbell Rows. I had the brain wave that this is a very easy way to get extra kg on the bar without stressing my core much at all :).
