Lifting and Your Teeth

I’m probably going to get braces soon. Braces at 23 will be AWESOME.

And wear a mouth guard.

remember head gear, do kids still wear that shit

invisalign ftw.

so, you’re all worried about looking like a dork when you lift? REALLY? the eyebulging, vein exploding, face cortortions similar to an epic shit, wraps, chains, notebooks, bands…

none of the rest of that stuff bothers you? but you’re worried about looking like a dork for putting in a mouthgard…

if i actually saw someone do that id pause for a moment of respect. honestly… a lift so intense you might break your teeth… that’s fucking awesome.

I’ve always had a problem with clenching my teeth when concentrating (pounding out a complicated bass riff, studying, crunching numbers in accounting, etc.) and my dentist has mentioned in the past that my teeth were grinding down more than normal. It’s become more pronounced recently in the years since I started lifting and my new dentist says that they seldom see such bad wear on someone my age and that you begin to see that kind of wear in 60+ year olds. I have a collection of about 5 mouth guards that I have lying around that I wear when I lift, sleep, and do anything that might invite teeth clenching. Inconvenient but a necessity.

For what it’s worth, I modify my mouth guards by cutting off most of the “front face” of the guards for more of a natural fit in the mouth which leads to less bulge around the mouth because of the guard. I find most mouth guards to be uncomfortable out of the box and since I’m not using them as something to keep my teeth from getting knocked out, I don’t really need the front plate to protect my teeth from the outside. This keeps the barrier between my top and bottom teeth intact while maintaining a more natural feel and look than your regular sports mouth guard. Hope that helps.

You probably wouldn’t pause for a moment of respect when you saw the puny ass weight I was lifting tbh.

Yeah I was thinking mouthguard is simply the logical answer. Must try the idea about the gum as well…

I had neck gear. Not as bad. But 14hours a day to wear it sucks ass.

To the OP:

I’ve only noticed since I’ve had some new fillings that I grind my teeth. It’s actually not during the workout that I notice, but the almost intollerable pain about 30 minutes after my workout. I liken the feeling to when I used to get my braces tightened and it felt like I could feel the roots of my teeth being ripped out.

I now make a concerted effort during my lifts not to clench my teeth.

Perhaps it’s time I go and get a mouthguard…
