Lifter from Chicago

JJ, thanks for stopping by, hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

Eco, no problem, I glad you got a chance to stop by. I think I’ll probably end up moving to the cross arms style once I put some weight on the bar.

Had a chance to get a workout in late this afternoon.

Bench, Barx15, 95x12, 135x8, 165x5, 195x3, 225x3, 255x3, 205x7 (the 255x3 may be a PR, but I’m to lazy to check my other laptop)

BB Row Barx12, 65x12, 85x12, 105x10, 125x8 (strict form); 145x6 a little cheat on last 2 reps

DB Press 35x10, 45x8, 50x8

Dips 0x11, 15x6, 20x5

So after 1 week of going back to 3-5-1, I decided to just continue to try to move heavy weight (for me) at low reps. My body feels better when I do this and I think I do a better job with low reps versus higher reps.

When I do front squats, I hook my straps to the bar, then wrap my hands with the strap and rack it, holding the straps, not the bar. No wrist pain and allows me to keep my elbows high.

Nice work! I like lower reps with heavier weights as well. It just wears me down so fast.
Keep at it. The progress is looking good.

Hello all,

I am a long time T-Nation member and a 41 year old who finds many of you in the Over 35 Forum inspiring because of your dedication to the iron game. I rarely post due to a busy life but am always checking in to learn something new and keep motivation high for my training. I am also a Chicagoan and live in Gurnee.

Here is a link The gym PeteS is talking about http://www.monstergaragegym.com/.

I have driven past this place and it looks cool…I may drop in for a one day pass sometime soon.

Keep up the great work Chi-Town Lifter and all of you fellow veterans in here.

Hey, gotta be down there for Thanksgiving, I need to get a bench session in that Friday and squatting on Saturday. Looking at Max Hardcaore in Waukegan, let me know if you are in…

actually Ithink it is monster garage[/quote]

Getting a 255 x 3 bench after getting a 259 competition bench in June is great progress. You’re doing something right. Keep it up.

Chitown, Rohay, sorry, so so sorry about the game today… I only caught the last 1/2 because of my drive back, but once again, so so so NOT sorry.

j/k guys.

Monster was great. With all the ‘hardcore’ gyms in the Chicago area, I would highly recommend taking advantage at least a couple of times a month, whether it’s Monster, Franz, CFC, Quads, Jakked, you guys have it fuggin made for gyms down there.

Ha ha. Yeah, my Bears are pretty bad. Vikings look like they have all the tools to make a run at the title.

Thanks for the info on Monster. I will definitely be checking it out soon.

My wife and I laughed that NONE of her family mentioned the game coming up when we were in Chicago. Not one. Usually I will get some comments/ribbing/grief. Sorry for the hijack.

i cried a little during that game. But the vikes do look damn good.

CTL as far as the front squats go im gonna try to explain how i do them, but it may come off as a complete fail. When the bar is racked walk into it so that it is where you want it on your shoulders. From there due to flexibility you can even just get your thumbs by the bar for stabilization. Or the tips of your first 2-3 fingers. I really believe that is enough stabilization and i was able to go fairly heavy with that and never felt like i was gonna lose it. As i said sorry if that isnt very explanatory but it tried haha. Keep up the good work.

Nice work chi-town…nice pressing.

I envy you folk the nice/hardcore gyms -anything remotely decent here in NYC is close to 2grand a year-
or over an hour away. which for manhattan is like dying.

Been a week since I posted. Reader’s digest version of whats been going on.

Sick Sunday to Tuesday. Finally got tired of laying around and worked out on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s Workout
Sumo DL top set 405x2, 435 didn’t budge off the ground. Just decided to try something new.
Good Morning top set 165x5 (getting better)
Bulgarian Split Squat 3 set 10 reps with body weight, still trying to to find my balance with these
Some EZ bar curls

Thursday’s Workout
Military Press top set 145x4
Assisted Pullups 5 sets
DB Bench top set 80x8, I was supposed to try 100x6, but my low back was sore for the previous day’s workout that I couldn’t get the 100’s into place.
DB ROW top set 75x8
Dips, 3 sets

Basketball last night, well a version of basketball that old men play, but its still a great workout. I think it really an excuse for us to get together and drink beer afterwards.

Thanks Hel. I hit 270x1 right about the time of the meet but didn’t get a chance to try in the meet because I screwed up the commands. I was happy with the 255x3, hopefully bench will start moving up.

Pete, the Bears are in a sorry state. Going the opposite direction of the Vikings. But I’m no bandwagon fan and I continue to watch every week. It is painful.

I hear you about the gyms in Chicago. I think it would be great thing to do.

FF thanks for the explanation. I am actually holding with 2-3 fingers only but its quite painful even at very low weights. I’m sure its just a flexibility issue and something I need to work at.

Rug, I’ve seen a picture of this and looks like a good option.

Rohay, thanks for stopping by. Monster Gym definetly looks like a great gym. The Velocity Sports that Eric Stone’s team lifts out of is alot closer to me and USA is around the same distance. Monster is partially owned by Phillip Daniels the ex Bear.

Today’s Workout

Bench Barx15, 95x12, 135x8, 165x5, 195x3, 225x3, 245x3, 265x1 The last set went up pretty easy but no spotter so I did not want to try for a second rep.

BB Row Barx15, 95x12, 115x9, 135x6, 155x4

Dips 0x12, 15x7, 25x5
