Lift Like a Girl

Alright pics of the balloons in your hair or it didn’t happen…

Last night was a successful day 1 of birthday celebrations. I played volleyball with 3 helium balloons attached in my hair. Oh and I was ‘slightly’ intoxicated as well. My vball team is loads of fun and super sweet considering I only met 4 of them a few weeks ago.

I’ve also just registered a team for the same volleyball tournament I played in last year just after my birthday. So, that weekend (July 3-5th) will mark the end of my birthday celebrations.

This morning I was operating at about half speed and was a little hungover to be honest. Now, I’m feeling good, have some energy back and am squatting and benching tonight. Woohoo!!! [/quote]

Several weeks of birthday celebration–I approve. Of course when you get to be ancient like me, you try to sneak past the birthday without the birthday noticing you…

sounds like a cool birthday…

Ill be stalking here to see how your bench work changes- sounds good.

I’m usually not a big birthday person at all. I think it comes from my birthday being a national holiday so my friends were always away or with family when I was growing up. However, if people want to give me attention, I’m not going to say no  Besides, you only turn a quarter century once!

That’s right. I would milk it for everything I could. I love my birthday though. I don’t know how old I’ll be before I don’t want it to be a big deal.

My 25th was probably one of my best. I hope yours is as good

I worked until 7pm tonight so, needless to say I didn’t get to the gym until late. There was nobody there that I knew, but still lots of people. I learned a ton tonight (note sarcasm) which I will explain later. For now, training:

Warm up, mobility, fun stuff, etc

I’ve gotten used to squatting at the club and I use a lower height to take off from. At my gym it just feels funny to try to get under since it’s “high”. I can still unrack without a problem but I don’t get the same pop-up feeling I do at the club. Oh well. Le sigh. I’m using kind of the Sheiko base prep cycle just for squats. I didn’t know what else to do, so this gives me some sort of weight/rep scheme to use when I’m not using bands.

Squats
45x10x2
135x5x1
155x4x2
175x2x3
205x2x5 - all felt very light and very strong and very fast. It was good. Too bad it wasn’t “me” lifting the weight because I was wearing a belt.

Bench
45x10x2
75x5x1
85x6x1
90x5x2
95x4x2

Behind the neck lat pulldowns - 3x8
Reverse Pec Deck - 3x8
FM Cable Row/Shoulder Pinch Thingy - 3x10
Tricep Pushdowns - 3x10

Okay, so keep in mind that I spent 10.5hrs behind a desk today yet managed to not murder anyone at the gym. Surprisingly I felt strong and energetic. I think it put me in a better mood just by stepping in there… so things I learned:

  1. You shouldn’t squat ‘that deep’ because it’s bad for your knees
  2. It doesn’t really count if you use a belt, you probably can’t squat that much without one.
  3. You should breath the whole time you are squatting.
  4. You shouldn’t bring the bar all the way down to touch your chest when you bench. It’s also really bad to pause it on your chest.

I’d love to say this was all told to me by one moron, but unfortunately I had 2 different experts critquing my main lifts tonight. Expert 1 was quarter squatting 185, with the pussy pad and gloves on. When he started with the “going that deep cuz it’s bad” thing, I asked him where he heard that, why, etc. You know, make him feel like I care about what he says and that I think he’s smart. When he continued, I put on my best “I think you’re a fuckhead” look and just kept smiling, uh-huh-ing and nodding. When he stopped speaking I continued staring at him until he walked away. I then called after him and told him it was poor gym manners to not unrack his weights. He came back and unracked them. I’m pretty sure he went home and either cried or killed himself. Expert 2 showed up on the bench beside me. I’m used to people asking/commenting about my arch, but this guy came up to me immediately after my first set at 85 and told me it was bad to touch your chest and/or pause. Why you ask? Because it eliminates the stretch reflex. And that’s bad. I kid you not. I just looked at him, said “Okay thanks” and went back to my benching… touching my chest AND pausing. He kept looking over at me and shaking his head until he caught my eye and I death glared him.

Now aren’t you all proud of me? I was entertained by them more than pissed off and enraged. Maybe I’ve got this whole bitch/temper thing under control. Possible, but unlikely…

OK, so now on Saturday when your in Niagara, quarter squat without a belt and stick to under 135 of course,…you are a girl. Then just keep going until they ask you what the hell you’re doing.

You know, it’s stories like this that make me want to go out and get a gym membership!

Oh, and congratulations on not killing anyone.

They’ll just yell “HIGH!” every rep until I figure out I’m squatting too high heehee. I’m not back in Niagara til next Wednesday (ma birthday) morning. I have volleyball tournaments both this Saturday and next. I’ll miss my boys, but not nearly as much as they’ll miss me (or so I like to think). When they’ll get real sick of me is once I’m done work before I leave for school and I’m down there 4x a week with them hahaha.

Oh and for the record, I only put my belt on for my last 2 sets when I felt my body starting to get a little tired and I wasn’t staying as tight.

Even better. Then start off with half squats and take ever set up higher. That way you can get pissed off at them and blame them for telling you to squat “high.”

And as for the belt, too bad you weren’t all suited up today.

Wow, Court, I really admire your self control. You did better than I did when I got my squat advice from the 1/4 squatting pussy pad using soft dough boy guy. I wonder if it’s the same guy.

Congratulations though, you’ve managed to piss me off on your behalf before I’ve even left the house today.

I always use the belt on weights 185 and over. If people don’t like it, they can bite my ass. BTW, I told my story to Aras when I was in on Monday and he liked it. Although I think he’s even more wary of me now.

I have a standard response I’m going to use now if that sort of shit comes up again.

Your response should have started with “You know how I know you’re gay?”

Yes, you self-control was admirable.
Lately I havn’t gotten anyone talking to me thank you ipod but I have had a few guys circle around my squat rack and bench looking confused, meh.

Thankfully you didn’t bitch slap this gentleman as I’d have to bitch slap you back.

PS: I heart you.

http://www.elitefts.com/documents/stretch_reflex.htm

Using the ‘stretch reflex’, especially in a strength phase to develop explosive power would be something a PL’er COULD incorporate to improve strength.

So, for a gym like GL, in my opinion it wasn’t a far-fetched comment to make. MUCH better than ‘you shouldn’t go so deep’.

Just my $.03.

PS: DId I mention I heart you?

Too many words for me to read right now. Also, he was wearing gloves to bench okay. Plus my biceps were bigger than his. He gets no opinion.

Exactly. So if I wanted your opinion, I’d give it to you. Until then, shut your mouth and just try to look pretty.

PS. I heart you too Toddles.

I played hookie this afternoon and lied out in my backyard in my bikini to get some sun. It was 85Fish (36C) and oh so nice. I plan on doing the same Friday, except with my best friend by a pool. This body needs some sun before I send it to California. Anyways, since I was home early and had to be in St. C’s later in the evening, I headed down to the club.

Bench
45x10
75x5
95x5
105x3
Shirt on:
135x3 (seating shirt)
170x2 (Boards: 2 to a 1)
170x2 (Same)
170x2 (Boards: 1 to a 0)
170x1 (To chest)

I dumped a few of these, I got stuck on a few and was just generally getting really frustrated. Hoi isn’t around this week and since Frank is gearing up for Ottawa, I didn’t want to bug him too much. The final one was decent. I have A LOT of work to do in my shirt before I move.

Deadlift
135x5
225x3
Suit (the same 36 WS I was in a few weeks back)
275x1
315x1
340x1 PR!
350x1 PR!

Everything was coming up pretty easily. I kept the suit slippers on the whole time because it was really hot/muggy in the gym and if I had any hope in hell of getting the suit off, I needed to keep them on. It still took me about 5 minutes. Also, after the incident a few weeks back (the only other time I was in this suit) where I took a backwards tumble, one of the guys stood behind me just in case I started to fall back. We were pulling in a weird spot kind of between the squat rack and squash courts so I would have definitely hit my head on something if I fell back.

It was a good day in the gym overall. A few others hit some PRs as well, including an 82.5er who hit a raw (belt only) 470lb pull. He went for it once, didn’t budge it, let go, re-set-up, same outcome. He took about 30 seconds, pulled his head out of his ass, and grinded it out.

My body is already sore… quads, glutes, pecs, lats, back… from yesterday and today. I’m taking a few days off from the gym since I have an all day volleyball 2s tourney on Saturday and I bet my body will love me for it.
