I always considered them a compound movement. Not as good as a squat, but there are still multiple muscle groups involved, IMHO.
Its compound, but open chained. Certainly not a squat. Figure since there’s no spinal loading, it’s half as good as a squat.
Why are you avoiding squats? To me squats are the most important and beneficial lifts you can do. Don’t fear the squat and dont make excuses. If your back hurts then do less weight until you can handle more.
Squat.
Agreed. Most people do leg press because they put huge weight, do partial reps, and still feel like a badass.
Some days my knees feel a little achy and I’m worn-out. But hey… Drop they weight and do your squats.
Not looking for a replacement to squats. Just looking for other exercises to use on TBT.
I use them as an additional excercise to squats and deadlifts on TBT. Works well enough for me. Is there a reason that’s not a good idea?
Front squats.

Yeah … What Vroom Said.
You can change up the squat just by changing the placement of your feet or as Vroom said … put the bar in front and do a front squat … killer on the quads!!!
Same can be said for leg press … vary the foot position for varied dergrees of torture.
I like the hack squat machine …if you have one in your gym … you will know what it is. Slightly different than the leg press but great for doing right after some squats.
Go deep and get the full ROM!!

You need more compound movements? I think the ones CW lists are: Squat, Front Squat, Hack Squat
and by hack squat he means the real kind, not the machine
If you get sick of those, try zercher squats, split squats, jump squats, overhead squats.
