Leg muscle failure

When I do a leg workout I make sure that its difficult for me to walk to my car afterwards.
I sometimes have to walk on my toes to avoid bending my knees, which can lead to falling over. My problem is that last night when I got out of bed to let my dogs inside my legs gave way completely. I was totally prone on the floor and had to haul myself back on to my bed with my arms. It took about five minutes before I could safely walk. This is around 6-8 hours after the workout. Does anyone know what this is or experianced it themselves?

what is your workout? Sounds like severe over-training to me. Perhaps you have a magnesium deficiency? Post more info…

I have to concur that it sounds like serious overtraining. I don’t want to come off as a Mentzer parrot, but I recall him and innumerous others commenting on a maximium amount of gain that can be attained with one training session. If you are busting your balls and not showing a steady improvement on output EVERY workout, then you are wasting your time. I also remember reading and subscribe to the newer paradigm about the quality of output. I would be willing to bet anyone that comments on this will agree. Your nervous system is probably hosed.
like the previous post asked. post your lower body routine, (I don’t use the word leg because the leg is the portion of the body below the knee). I commend the committment, but would have to say, give yourself a break.

Although I have to agree with the other guys that overtraining may be a factor, it could also be that your muscles were paralyzed due to sleep. If you’re in deep REM sleep, your skeletal muscles become paralyzed to prevent you from acting out what you’re dreaming and hurting yourself. It takes a while for the strength to come back. Haven’t you had an experience when right after waking, your grip is so weak, you can hardly open a mayonnaise jar?

I dont think I am suffering from over training.
I am still getting decent poundage improvements. Magnesium levels are sorted already. Lower body routine is currently 3 sets of power clean (6 reps), 5 sets of squats with failure coming at around 10-12 reps. Leg extensions on the max setting for as many sets as it takes to make me stagger (Normally 3).

Overtraining? Probobly! If not i’d say you’ve stumbled into CP’s GVT. The first squat GVT workout i did, i had to call a cab to get home from my buddy i were working out with (500m) ;-).

I had the same problem when my buddy and I first started lifting 5 years ago. We would do an intense leg workout, much like the one you have listed, and I would be unsteady on my feet if not falling down for the next 24 hours. We were lifting half ass at the time so I do not believe overtraining was an issue with us.

I don’t know exactly what it is, but I usually fall down my stairs when I get home, and then again the next morning when I wake up. Your average fatigue I would guess.
