Hi Diana,
Actually, it’s tennis elbow. Seems I pulled the tendons further than they are intended to be pulled. And it was not even from tennis!

Have you tried elbow sleeves?

Claire, I think I’m going to get some of those. All I found elsewhere are the ones that look like tensor bandages. It’s such a nag, this elbow. Doesn’t really bug for a while, then wham, it’s killing me. Very frustrating.
Thanks for the link!

Workout 27/12/07-with coach
Technical snatch, one movement, one hour. Did I hear about that!
Started all good:
a.technical snatch-from hip
b.drop squat
warmup x3 with small bar (20 lbs)
x3 with 35 lb bar (a&b)
x3 55lb (a&b)
x3 60lbs (a&b)
a. 65 lbs x0
b. 65 lbs x3
a. 65lbs x0
a. 60 lbs x1
a. 65 lbs x0
and so on…I really have no idea how many times I dropped the weight back down, made the movement, raised the weight back up to 65lbs and failed.
Eric gave me the stick, grabbed my elbow and made me drop under the stick while rotating my arm. I have paw prints on my inner arm from this.
Tried again, made 60, failed 65. Eric started to try and piss me off, saying I’m scared to get under the bar. I’m not scared, I’m just not fast enough to get under 65 lbs.
Finally, he gave up. I basically felt like puking at this point, so was happy to move on.
Power snatch-from floor
x6 50lb
x3 55lb
x1 60lb
clean & jerk
x3-olympic bar
x3 55lbs
x3 60lbs
split clean
x3 55lbs
x3 55lbs
x1 60lbs
Eric is re-working my program, this one is 5 weeks now and I’m not lifting enough for his liking. So it will be higher reps, lighter weight. Good, I say. I know the form, when I hit it I do fine, but I miss a lot. My brain gets it, but my body doesn’t get it yet 100%.
This is frustrating, I was really getting ready to throw a plate, frisbee fashion, at his head today. 5lbs difference, it must be in my head, but I just couldn’t do it.
I really feel like going back tomorrow and keep trying. I wasn’t mad at the gym, but now I’m pissed. Anyways, it’s not a good idea, but Saturday is my leg day, and I’m going to try again then. If I go at it tomorrow, I’m gonna hurt myself, every muscle from my ankle to wrist is sore right now.
I just realised how much it helps to write
this out and vent.

I just laughed for a full five minutes on this one, because I’m right there with ya!
Except for the period bloated part. There actually are a few good things about being a post menopausal 54 year old woman, and this is one of them :^)
Hi db, You say in your first post that you’d like to hear some “gems” from other o-lifters. I’ve been at it with a coach for 2 years 5 months. Of course, after that much time, I’m not an expert but I think I’ve finally made the transition out of raw newbie. My coach thinks so, too. Here is what I can tell you (after reading your posts). Of course, your mileage may vary from mine…
Get the lifting shoes. They will help tremendously with stability. The more stable you are the more confident you’ll be dropping under the bar. See if your coach has a pair you can borrow. I’ve used them since day one and can’t imagine lifting without them. One time I forgot to put them on before doing body weight squats as warm up. I was wobbling all over the place. Get the shoes.
From the beginning, my coach told me it would take about 2 years of practice before my body/mind pattern control would really set it. Now that I’m past 2 years I have to say it was true for me. Unless you were a good gymnast when you were younger, plan on two years to get the mind/body pattern set. The way my coach described it is that you get to the point where when you miss a lift you know what to do different and then do so on the next lift. I’m lifting in a club with some youngsters (as young as 13) and it seems to be true even for the teens. Everything I’ve read about o-lifting technique says that it is a very technical lift. The patterning takes time and repetition. Get your mind around that to help reduce frustration. Om-mani-padme-om, grasshopper. It will take time. Keep at it.
A big gem I learned from my coach was “fail a new way”. Even though it will take time to learn the lifts, try to fail a new way. If one way of doing it doesn’t succeed, change something. You might fail but hopefully in a new way. If you dropped the bar ahead of you on the snatch repeatedly, change something and you either make it or, hopefully, drop the bar a new way. You and your mind/body patterning will learn something new instead of repeatedly patterning an unsuccessful pattern. I know it sounds weird to anticipate failing but it will take time to learn and failure will happen along the way. Don’t keep failing the same way. Change something. One of the changes you make will be successful and you can begin patterning a successful move.
Hi Stand-Up,
I am def. getting the shoes. My running shoes suck for these lifts and I really do not feel stable a lot of the time. I found some Ironstar II from an e-bay shop (new, not used) for $80, so I’m going to head to the mall and try on other Adidas to verify the size.
I know it’s going to take time to get the correct form. The technical snatch is really hard for me, while power snatch is not so bad. I get frustrated b’coz I am a fast learner in almost everything and I’m used to having more successes in stuff I do. I am also a hard headed Aries, so you can bet I won’t give up, ever. But I know I really just started this, and I have time to learn.
I like your learn to fail in a new way advice. I always fail in the same place: I don’t have enough speed to get under the bar after 60 lbs (right now). I get the bar high enough to drop under, and my body freezes. I don’t feel scared, but I think somewhere in my head my brain just says stop. Anyways, practice, practice I’m paid up until spring ad it’s the slow period at work now so this is my main pursuit.
Can’t wait to get some shoes, maybe it’ll help mentally as well!

Workout 29/12/07
This did not go well, I think I am getting sick.
DB alt lunges
20x15, 15x20, 10x20, 7x25 each side
DB StraightLDL
20x25, 15x30, 10x30, 7x30
DB Jump Squats
20x15, 15x15, 10x15
Here is where the trouble started, feeling like tossing my cookies (actually, no cookies involved). I thought OK, try a little cardio, so I got on my elliptical and couldn’t even walk fast. Total energy burnout. I upped my weight a bit, 5 lbs or so (the weight is for each DB) but it’s not a lot.
Anways, sat down on the couch and crashed for an hour or so. Still feel like there are bugs crawling in my stomach.
Tonight is Christmas with the French side of the family. I was worried about eating too much again, but not now hahaha. Feeling sick has it’s advantages, now I have an excuse for not eating tortierre. I hoping there is turkey, I’ll have that and salad. Also bought some new jeans, skinny cut, can’t eat too much wearing those.
At least I got some cardio in yesterday, tomorrow is upper body so I hope I don’t feal all weak again coz I really like that routine.
ciao
db
Hope you feel better. Sure hope I didn’t give it to ya.
Hope you had a good Christmas.
Diana
Hope you feel better.
Claire
Thanks guys.
I think I need a de-loading week. I’m going to go light tomorrow and for the rest of the week. I’m not sick, I think my body needs a break. I’ve been consistantly upping weight for about 4 months now. I need to listen to what my muscles are telling me.
And I can’t wait until the holidays are done, 2 more gatherings left and it’s over. Tonight was the side of the family with lots of screaming kids who received gifts and ate tons of sugar. Lethal combination.

2 hours of vacuuming-does that count?
Went lower on the weight or stayed the same as last week and felt pretty good. Maybe yesterday was just a bad day, I felt I could have gone up in weight in a few places but just thought it better to take it easy.
db
2 hours of vacuuming?! How? Why?
I can hardly handle cleaning for 2 hours, let alone just vacuuming for that long. ![]()
LOL big house, hairy dog, messy kid!
Did 30 minutes of honest hill climbs on the elliptical today (honest b’coz I kept them steep) and some ab work:
standing cable crunches
OH DB squats (like the T-Nation article, these are good)
planks
I need to be sure I put some ab work in at least twice a week, I always neglect this. Funny thing too, b’coz I actually like ab training. I liked working out at home the past few days but will be ready to get back at the gym on Wednesday.
Happy New Year to all the Powerful Women out there!

So that’s it, last holiday shit is done.
Went to a resto with the in-laws. I’m off any junk right now, but did I get the comments on my grilled chicken with salad, dressing on the side, no rice, no potatos order. The salad come smothered in dressing, so I sent it back. Another round of comments. Getting pissed at this point. The MIL hands over a bag of marshmallow coated rice cripsie things dipped in corn syrup and god knows what else. ARRRGGGGGG…
Anyways, screw it I say, I’m back down to the pre-holiday weight, I’m not puffy and my tummy is flat. If they want to be fat, fine.
2008, bring it on baby!
db
Oh yeah, did my 30 minutes hill climbs this morning as well

It is so hard to eat healthy with family. Great job sticking with what YOU want to eat. I can;t wait for tomorrow to eat normal and go to the gym:)
Happy New Year!
Claire
Usually they are not so bad, I get some comments but I can deal with it. Mark never questions what I’m eatng, but he felt uncomfortable with me sending back my salad. He’s like “What’s the difference” and I’m like, I don’t tell you what to eat, that’s the difference. I think it was b’coz we were with his parents.
I can’t really complain, he puts up with the dozens of eggs and bunches of brocolli I am always buying and he doesn’t touch. Then again, I put up with the little cupcakes and kraft dinner he lives on!
We are extreme opposites, seems to all work out though!
db
Workout 2/01/08-at gym
DB Flat press
20, 15x22.5, 10, 7x25
DB Incline press
20, 15x22.5, 7x25, 8x25, 5x25
Narrow grip row
20x50, 15x60, 10x70, 7x70 (last ones were bad form, I was pulling with my arms too much and a guy actually gave me a little lecture about it. He was nice and trying to help, and that’s all good, I knew they sucked)
Assisted chins
10x100, 10x90, 10x90, 10x90, 10x90 (I’m finding that chins and pull-ups are bothering the elbow so I used much more weight and less reps per set)
DB Curls and Hammer Curls
20x15, 15x15
30 minutes random elliptical. The machine at the gym is easier than the one at home. I have a Precor and they have something, umm, I forget. Still felt good, I just upped the level.
I got a sneak peak at my new program, which starts tomorrow, before my coach kicked me out of his office. Finally, a normal program with normal sets/reps. Finally some squats and DL. He says that finally I have learned to squat.
One goal met: I bought shoes! (easy goal to meet, just had to throw my visa at it).
They are shipping today from CA and I’m really hoping the stability helps on o-lift days. I got the IronworksII (Adidas) from an e-bay seller (new, not used ick) for 99.95 including shipping. I guess they fell off a truck, couldn’t find them for less than $149 anywhere else. Oh well, too bad for the truck.

Glad you are excited about your new workout.
It is always nice to change it up.
