When I originally started bodybuilding I didn’t care to read all the numerous articles on the web about how to gain muscle without adding much fat. Since I was very skinny at the time I didn’t care about gaining fat, and having a “beach look” was certainly not a priority, so I pigged out to gain weight, any weight. However things are different now…
I started weightlifting (OL) about 3 months ago and had my first competition about two weeks ago, where I weighed in at 62.2/136.84. My bodyfat is around 12% (ffm = 54.7/120.4) so I thought it would be probably be no problem whatsoever to lose a pound or so and come in under the 62/136.4 weight class. And then I got to thinking, the ideal thing would be to gain some muscle so that I stand at around 61.5/135 with 7-8% bf (ffm = 57.2/125.8). In other words, gain ~5.5lbs muscle and lose 7lbs of fat.
Gaining that amount of muscle isn’t a problem, I’ve been bigger than I am now before so if I just started bulking I’d probably gain it easily. The problem is I can’t allow myself to gain too much fat while doing this - 5lbs at the top.
The question is: Can this be done, and in a reasonable amount of time? (say, a few months tops).
(Another option of course would be to pig out and bulk up so that I’d weigh more for the 69kg/151.8lbs class, but the above “problem” again appears once your ffm starts to approach that number.)
