Knees are a Pain

I have tendinitis in my right knee. Got some knee sleeves and lots of stretching was feeling pretty good. Squat and deadlift were improving. Then a month ago while ramping up to my working set for squats I got horrible pain in my left knee. The inner part towards the front of my knee cap. Took the weight off tried to squat the bar and pretty much fell over. Felt good for a week so tried to squat again, same thing. No squats the next week, but got stabbing pain while dead lifting and dropped me to the ground. Looks like I’ll probably have to see the dr.

Any similar experiences?

what does your warm up look like before you squat?

A set or 2 of light leg curls and a set or 2 of 10 reps with the bar

I had a similar experience while wrestling - eventually went and saw the doc, and was diagnosed with a slight tear in my meniscus - was told to rehab it with physiotherapy and loads of cycling on the stationary bike.

Might be worth getting it checked out by a medical professional

Had MRI done. Some wear on my cartilage but no tears. Dr says it’s just tendinitis only worse than other knee, keep stretching quads, calves, hamstrings. Being on my feet all day I have a feeling this is sticking around for a good while.

ride85,

I recommend you hit up the foam roller on your iliotibial bands. IT band has some insertion on the lateral side of the knee cap. If it is tight, it pulls the knee cap laterally and grinds. Stretching out the iliotibial band, in addition to quadriceps in particular, should be very helpful for you. Good luck.

I have Patella Tendonitis in both knees as well. I had them for about 4 years or so. Honestly, the only thing that made them better was rest time and consistently icing them. Mine was from my days of High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Basketball and Volleyball. Not to mention playing basketball on the concrete nearly every day. Do yourself a favor, Get a pair of jumpers knee straps. Mueller makes a great pair for around 20-25$. These were the only thing that helped me when I would play Basketball/Volleyball and of course Box Jumps and Squats. They go on just below the knee cap and apply mild pressure to the Patella. It reduces loading on the actual Patella.

My Jumpers Knees (Patella Tendonitis) is now almost fully healed. I no longer have to wear the straps. I still keep them around just in case.

Quick points:

  • Ice every couple of hours for 15-20 minutes.
  • Rest
  • Get yourself a pair of knee straps
  • See a physiotherapist

I wish you luck!

Thanks I’ll give these things a try

See an physiotherapist and squat ass to grass.
Train heavu duty style once week, 1-2 set, every set to failure to let your tendons recover

Dyyd,

Squatting ass to grass has mixed research on it. Without him being seen by a physio (I am one) to assess his structure, I wouldn’t recommend this. I will second your training recommendation, though.

I think it would be better to strengthen the tendons with isometrics, and not go to failure when you squat.

Same here with the knee pain. Anything worked so far? It really just came out of no where.

Excuse if I have no idea of your experience level — but what does your squat look like? It was murder on my knees until I started squatting lower and focused on keeping my knees over my feet as much as possible.

I see people in the gym basically squatting with the knees and not the hips (and not even getting parallel), and want to tell them their going to kill their knees – but I try not to be that guy. But hey, I’ll do it here.

Can you describe your squat technique?

is it patellar or quad tendonitis? I suffered from quad tendonitis (above the knee cap, right in the middle. I had a prp injection in both knees. Dropped me for a week but has pretty much fixed the problem.

Do notice, that the PRP injection has fixed the problem, but probably not the underlaying problem that caused the tendonitis.
