Does anyone know where to get smaller kettlebells? The smallest ones they have at DragonDoor are about 36 lbs. I don’t know if I would be able to get a decent number of reps at that weight, or be able to use proper form. I’m 5’10" 125 lb female. I can do 10 BW pullups with a bit of assistance and have been incorporating Coach Davies GPP into my routine (I love it!), but my overall strength is not that high, probably due to my low weight. Any thoughts?
Also, I saw another post where someone talked about making their own kettlebells, using a tricep bar I think. Anyone have any luck with making their own? Thanks for any thoughts and feeback.
Can you give me an idea of your other weight room numbers. I am developing a large series of training programs for female athletes and would appreciate your input as much as possible. Thank you. In faith, Coach Davies
I am a little ashamed to admith my numbers, but here goes: (I don’t do single maxes, so all weights are for the 8-10 rep range. Let me know if that works for you)
DLs: 150#
OHP: 75#s
Dips: BW + 10#s
pull-ups (to chest, strict form) BW but only for 3-5 reps. I can go higher on “easier” types of pull-ups
Bent Press: 30#s (These are really fun)
Squats: 175#s
I don’t really do bench presses, mostly because I don’t like them. I prefer to focus on more “functional” exercises.
Hope this helps, I’ll be happy to provide more info if you like.
Never be embarrassed, sport is about the triumph of will. I tend to think you could handle the lighter model but let me get back to shortly. In faith, Coach Davies
I wanted to check around with others of your strength and have validated that the lightest one will suffice your needs. If you have question, feel free to ask. In faith, Coach Davies
You can order the ones that Coach Davies recommends at “dragondoor.” Or you can get the ones that Mike is talking about at “ironmind.” But the dragondoor kettlebells are better on the arms.
I have heard people say that the kettlebell handles sold through fractionalplates are better than the plate loaded kettlebell handles at ironmind. The handles from fractional plates just attach to a normal dumbbell.
I feel that the Kb at fractional plates is good enough and I do not feel that it is hard on your arms when you get the form down. My arms did get bruised quite a bit the first week. However, I learned the proper technique quickly from Pavel’s KB video and now I do not have any problems. With shipping the KB with handle from fractionalplates costs about $70.00. you can load 10 10lb plates on it to equal about 110lbs. The Kettlebells at dragondoor costs over $300.00 for all three and with shipping it is probably close to $400.00. Moreover you only have three weights to play with 35, 54, and 72. What happens when 72 becomes too light? THus, overall I think that the Kb handle from fractional plates is a much better buy.
Oh, I have give it a lot of thought. In truth, I jump at the chance at working with female athletes. I am disappointed that more female athletes havn’t wanted to discuss athletic type training. I work with a fair amount of female athletes from diverse venues such as soccer to Olympic weightlifting. Now you may notice that I dont treat female athletes like “girls” but like great warriors. So you want to talk - it will be my pleasure. Maybe we should set a post for Hardcore Female Athletes. In faith, Coach Davies
Good point Mike. I guess it really depends on your goals and strengths. I recently purchased the 36-pound kettlebell from dragondoor. That will be sufficient for quite some time since I’m following Coach Davies programs, and he recommends high reps. So that will work for quite a while for me. But for those of you who need more weight, the ironhorse kettlebells may be a better buy. At least there are options to choose from!
