Keloid Scarring & Hypertrophy

I was in the process of researching whether or not I would qualify for Lasik eye surgery… One of the stipulations was the fact that people who have a history of keloid scarring may not be able to have the surgery performed.

So I got to thinking, keloid production is a form of hypertrophy. So, does the fact that a person is prone to keloid scarring have anything to do with the tearing down and building up process involved in body building? Is there any research/ correlation between this and performance?

Well, I had to look up keloid scarring, but it seems to be totally different from muscle hyptertrophy.

Different types of cells are involved and different types of proteins are laid down by those cells. Also, the keloid growth is abnormal in that it doesn’t follow the body-plan. Muscle hypertrophy does (you’re not going to be able to change the shape of your muscles or add new ones).

So, without actually knowing anything about keloid scarring, I’d say that weight lifting isn’t really going to impact keloid scarring. Well, at least you would have noticed it by now if weight lifting had the potential to influence your scars.

It would make sense…if an individual has a greater genetic potential for hypertrophy, then that could apply to all areas of the body…eyes included.

What has me thinking its not related though, is the fact that an individual’s potential for hypertrophy is largely a factor of their dominant fiber types. Fast twitch guys are going to grow more easily than the slow twitch ones.

Since your eyes (as far as I know) are not composed of muscle fibers and do not consist of varying amounts of materials, each with different growth potentials, I dont think the two are related.

Cool though though.
