Kara Bohigian 225x7 Raw Bench

At the intro for the vid they mention she did a set in “NFL Style”, is that a specific techinque or is it some inside joke?
I think they were referring to that bounce off the chest that the guys in the NFL are allowed to do to get more reps of 225 when they are tested.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Off my high horse? you are truly retarded. What the hell do I care what others outside of the sport think of it? and you say “If PL ever wants to progress … then this is who it needs to appeal too.” Who does it need to appeal to? To hom are you referring? Jeez, check your posts over before you submit them, will you.

And I doubt PL will EVER be in the olympics, they are taking sports OUT, if you hadnt noticed - softball, baseball, etc. I still dont understand how the hell the olympic games became the great arbiter on what is a respectable sport. The very idea of it is a joke - and thats coming from someone who enjoys watching the olympics.

I dont even know why you bothered posting this - you give props to kara, and say the problem is with the feds. I didnt mention gear in my initial post at all, and that seems to be the primary reason for your hissy fit.
First off dont ever call me a retard you fucking prick.
Secondly learn how to spell. Maybe proof read your posts. In addition its become plainly obvious that im going to have to spell EVERYTHING out for you so you understand exactly what my point of view is. Are you ready? Gooooood.

Range of motion - in kara’s vid is not good, but its acceptable in her fed - hence why i suggested her fed needs sorting. Yes im aware its a training video but too me, many feds accept and pass poor lifts that wouldnt pass in the IPF nevermind for the ‘average’ guy in the gym.

Why not aim for the olympics? Surely this is a sign a sport has been taken seriously by governing bodies outside of its existance. If this is not appealing too you then fine, stick with your little niche in triple ply cat suits.

I admit i wandered slightly in my second post but my overall summary would be that the vid in case is not impressive to me, and the reasons behind her lifting style (her fed, silly gear) hamper the sport to a large extent.
And yes i can bench more than her raw before you ask.

Guys I’m not a pl’er so dont’ rip me but that arch she has looks ridiculous. I’ve seen alot of pro pl’ers bench and they have some arch but that’s look silly. I think I could bench 100 lbs more if I set up like that, but I’d probably injure myself so I suppose that’s the whole trick. Am I just sounding retarded here or does anyone agree?
Actually it is a little retarded but I won’t flame you cuz you don’t know. It is actually a lot harder to bench raw with a big arch. I remember when I switched to a big arch for all my benching and my raw bench went DOWN about 30 pounds! It has bounced back and is now a little higher than my old max, but benching like that RAW is hard because of all the stabilization it requires and your loss of leverage with the low touch point.
Actually… Go in the gym next time you bench and try it out! You will see.

Blah blah blah arches. I don’t care if a guy gets an advantage because of the way he is built, that’s sports. My only problem is when being fat gives you an advantage. That’s like the antithesis of sport. I have a problem with guys like Rychlak; I don’t see any problem with Kara’s bench.

Hey Wide, if I was two feet taller I could be in the NBA.

I disagree, but I will say that this is actually the best idea I’ve ever heard for accounting for arches. Most people say "well they shouldnt be allowed to arch, completely disregarding that some have a natural arch, others have naturally short limbs etc.

I dont think the feds will ever address arching (nor do I think they should) but if they ever did, yours is the best idea I’ve ever heard yet. They could probably even just use the old W = F*d equation too.
Why do we need to account for arches? Developing (or having naturally) an good arch is simply working at making one aspect of the lift better. Kinda like getting stronger will make your lifting better. We work on getting the bar speed faster, maybe should we have limitations on how fast the lift goes up. Feds and meet rules can dictate what kind of shirt I wear, how soon I can weigh in, whether or not I can juice, and such…but the day they try to tell me what kind of form I can use, I quit. Can you imagine a meet where you are disqualified for not having your elbows pointed straight out, or I didn’t take the required two breaths during the lift?

No sport is “fair” for everyone who plays it. If all of us had some equalization handicap, it would defeat the purpose of competition. For all you bitches that whine about lifters having an advantage over you for one reason or another, either adapt, improve, and GFS, or take up board games instead…

(KBC-not personally directed at you)

guys guys guys

the important thing here is that she’s hot. :-p

sike

ALright I expected a little of that. I have tried it before and it’s hard as hell. That woman is amazing to say the least. It kinda looks like her ass came off the bench though. No?

So, do you have a problem with the sport of Sumo Wrestling?

Having an advantage because of being fat is part of the sport of Powerlifting, but only a small part, and only in the super-heavy weight division.

My fat’s not doing me any good in powerlifting, so I’m going to be losing a lot of it to get better at powerlifting.

Kara did awesome, and I’m sure she’s following the rules of the organization in which she competes.

Someone benching with their elbows in has an advantage over someone benching with their elbows flaired out.

I’m not going to complain about them getting more weight using better technique, I’m going to figgure out how to use that technique to get bigger lifts as long as it’s still following the rules of the organization that I’m competing in.

Same goes for arching, and I guess one could also argue along the same lines for gear. I don’t like how far they are taking the gear to aid in the lifts, but when I get better and move on from RAW meets, I’ll be competing in gear myself. I’ll then have to learn how to use it because it’s an advantage that my competitors will have.

Impressive lifting for sure! I think that some powerlifters have to take their heads out of the sand though… The “we don’t need spectators, we can do what we want in a garage”-attitude isn’t helping the sport in the long run…

Ofcourse she is impressive, ofcourse she lifts much, very much! But one also have to be able to take critique without throwing a fit…

Your argument that the arch hinders doesn’t make any sense. You said once you got used to the arch you had a higher bench. And if it lowers your weight on the bench, why do powerlifters do it then? Just curious.

I thought the arch lowers the travel of the bar and it also puts the bench to a decline sort of motion, which is easier, cus most people can bench more on the decline once they get the technique down pat.

Kara is a superb athlete and a very nice person.

Yes, the shirts can add tremendously to one’s lifts but that doesn’t discount the fact she is a record holder when competing against other women who have the chance to use the same equipment.

Her fiance, Ryan Kennelly is a man who has incredible bench strength both raw and shirted. In his video you can see him play with 405 lbs x 20 reps bare-skinned. The guy is a FREAK!

They are both incredibly strong and great people and it bugs me when ignorant people (in the truest sense of the word) make negative comments about athletes.

There is a fine line between negative and critical and i dont think anyone has crossed it.
Why people get so defensive is just as bugging.
Im not acusing you directly.

Thanx.

The only way to end all this BS is to ban all types of gear and make everyone lift raw. I promise most of these guys / gals do not want that because their raw strength sucks. Guys who cannot bench 1 clean raw rep at 315 and hit 600 in a shirt + a fat gut. Don’t believe? I have seen it with my own eyes.

First off, I WILL call you a retard because you are acting like one. Don’t like it? Tough.

Wouldn’t pass the IPF? Who cares? THe IPF is a joke. When Tiny Meeker cant touch 900 lbs in a friggin single ply, the line between single and multi-ply has been destroyed. And their drug testing policy is intellectually dishonest. As has been pointed out numerous times, drug-tested does not mean drug-free.

The olympics are a sign a sport has been taken seriously? Great, then I guess ballroom dancing is a great example of sport.

And I dont care what you bench, raw, shirted or on the moon.

Whats ironic about this is that I HEARD that kara has said (with her tongue planted firmly in cheek) “what I do isnt even benching - I just make my body into a ‘U’ and try to keep the bar in the groove for a few inches.” or somehting to that effect.

Amusing.

fuck bench press numbers. how much can she squat and deadlift?
Scott aka Rice wrote:

At this years seniors she squatted 500.5 in briefs and singlet and deadlifted 473 according to the results I saw. This was also coming off ACL surgery in the not too distant past.

Kara kicks ass and is stronger raw or geared than most of this board.
