Sick back. I dunno about 297 though. What’s Roelly weighing right now? He looks MUCH larger than Kai in his 10 weeks out pics.
yeah bro i agree…no way is he 297. HELL NO. How tall is he? Even then he looks NOTHING like ronnie does when that close to a comp. And ronnie aint 297 then. Well maybe idk…
WTF? The man was over 300lbs in that video posted in this thread and he was ripped back then…a year ago. You think someone with genetics like that can’t be LESS weight and MORE LEAN than last year?

This just isn’t true. The JUDGES are the ones setting the standard by awarding certain physiques. No one would give a shit about “ripped glutes” if the judges weren’t awarding points just for that. Saying that if all of the competitors came in looking one way then this would force the judges to accept something different doesn’t erase the fact that the judges are the ones making the final decision.
If no one had ever come into a contest with ripped glutes it would never have been rewarded. Someone had to set a precedent.

At the pro level everyone is huge and well proportioned. Eventually it just has to come down to conditioning.

Ronnie was listed at 5’11 296 for the '04 olympia contest which was likely an exaggeration. No way in hell is Kai 290+ at 5’8 or w/e.

I really have to point out to you that when Ron was on stage at 290+lbs, he was hitting over to 320lbs at his heaviest in the off season?

Kai isn’t stage ready despite how impressive he looks here. Being 300lbs weeks out is like being 280lbs on stage.

How is it the competitor’s fault that someone is a freak in a certain area and the judges start awarding that specifically?

If one guy develops traps so big he can’t even look up, and judges start only awarding guys with stupidly huge traps, how is that anyone else’s fault but the judges?

The competitors want to win yet you are basically saying they should ignore what the judges want in order to change the criteria…as if the judges will stop awarding what they see fit.

You are basically implying that the only way to change the criteria is for every man on stage to get together and boycott a certain aspect of competition so the judges don’t have a choice anymore.

I mean, do you still not see that the power lies in the hands of the judges no matter what?

Did anyone else laugh when Kai had to twist his body to 0put his hands on hips to do his rear lat spread? i lold

X’s point is correct, Kai is likely (in my opinion) perhaps close to that weight now, maybe high 280’s…however he’ll diet down stepping on stage as one of the biggest competitors in the high 260’s, this is my guess.

bonez good point about the dieting down, in attempt to look dry/ripped looking flat often happens, flatness creates the appearance of being smaller because the carb up’s backfire etc etc

Oh I Know. I’m saying that if Kai was truly holding that much weight you’d think he’d look much larger. I mean if he really is 297 right now on 5’8 that means he’s got like 30 pounds more muscle (factoring in 5-10lbs per inch of height) than Ronnie did at the '04 olympia and I will shit bricks if Kai comes in at 280, but I doubt it. It really doesn’t even matter though haha.

The ripped glutes thing is an exaggeration. Typically guys who do not have the “ripped glutes” in the pro contests have their entire back side looking soft. You never see someone with completely chiseled hamstrings, a christmas tree back and soft glutes…it’s just part of the total package.

It seems to be one of the last areas to get lean, meaning the competitor worked his ass off (hah!) to get that lean so why wouldn’t the judges reward it? That would be like not rewarding a competitor because he is too muscular and we all know there is no reason to be THAT muscular right?

I agree with X in that the judges are ultimately responsible for how lean these guys get because they have the final decision.

However, those of you writing that the competitors shouldn’t get as dry as they do for health reasons need to stop bullshitting. If you like the 6% look over the 3% look than, ok, great, but this health crap is ridiculous. Bodybuilding isn’t about health. It’s not necessarily healthy to be 290 pounds of muscle, either.

Sadly this is true. I recall an old interview with Paul Dillet when he was one of the top Mr. Olympia competitors, where he stated that his long term goal was to “get out of bodybuilding with my [his] health intact”. That really shocked me at the time, but it makes a hell of a lot of sense now.

Judges give points for ass striations? Ugh… I guess we can blame them both then. The competitors brought it to that level in the first place, and the judges made sure it continued.
One thing I might point out is that we won’t get normal, more hetero square posing trunks anytime soon because of that striated glutes business.

There are far greater health consequences due to the last few weeks of contest prep than ANYTHING these guys do the rest of the year. Diuretics use is far more acutely dangerous than injectible anabolics.

Didn’t Katsumi Kitamura die because he abused diuretics during a contest prep? I always thought diuretic use was the most unhealthy aspect of bodybuilding.
therajraj wrote:

Most of the bodybuilders who have died while competing died because of their diuretics use. Mike Mattarazzo was rushed to the hospital several times due to electrolyte imbalances that threatened his heart and kidneys.

I am actually surprised posters thought steroid use alone was so dangerous considering how few cases there ever are of severe health consequences based wholly on injectible anabolics use short of systemic issues that are often the result of ignoring things like blood pressure.

Paul Dillet had to be carried off stage when he cramped up at the Arnold. I think he’d been given Lasix for the first time. I would like to see diuretics gone from competition.

Bodybuilding overall needs to go back to the old days, I’m tired of looking at these mass monsters coming in at 280lbs on stage with a 45 inch slin/gh gut. Guys are killing themselves to get up to these ridiculous weights and then having a hard time getting down to contest shape (i.e trey brewer), just for the sake of saying “oh i was 310 in the offseason.” Maybe they shouldn’t come in so lean as well, but as long as the fans continue to demand these monstrous guys that are shredded it will continue to be this way. I really hope bodybuilding can get back to the classic physiques which were truly beautiful instead of these blocky creatures they now call a bodybuilder.

This is perfection

Not this

Dude, your post would fit in if this were around 2002, but there are just too many guys who do have that X-frame winning lately to even write what you did.

They are cheering on Ced McMillan, not Markus Rhul, to win the O in the future.

That last vid you posted is also a little off. They were often catching off season bodybuilders and making an issue of their stomach not being flat. Guess what, when you weigh 280lbs or more and are eating POUNDS of food every 3 hours or so, your stomach won’t be flat unless you go several hours with no food and start dieting for a contest.

Yes bodybuilding is starting to realize its flaws and I’m very glad guys like Ced, Ed Nunn and Toney Freeman are starting to win over guys with huge guts. I very much so realize that its impossible to keep a tight waist at that weight, that’s why as I said bodybuilding should go back to the old days and penalize the guys who obviously don’t have a tight waist and I think we would begin to see the beautiful physiques again.
