Just Your Average Gorilla (an Introduction)

I started lifting at age twelve when my dad bought me a cheap bench set. I didn’t do much with it. But I did some. I used the highschool weight room when it was available. In my late twenties I had a nice home gym that I used extensively to get in my best shape ever (so far). But stepping out on the road put an end to regular workouts. Depression and apathy (mostly from a decade stuck in a bad marriage) put me right back in the pit I grew up in.

So here I am, in my mid 40s, ready to get serious about the iron again. I’m currently somewhere between 340 and 360 at 6’2". I’m “country strong” from a lifetime of manual labor. I’m not interested in getting a “beach bod” or being “ripped”. I’m much more focused on the powerlifting/strongman style of training. I like being massive. I like telling people I’m over 300 pounds. But I’d much rather be 300+ like Mariusz Pudzianowski than 300+ like I am currently.

you could probably stand to lose 150+ lbs for health reasons rather than being “ripped”

you should post up what you typically eat per day and any training you currently do.

you could dramatically improve the quality of your life and probably add multiple decades to your life expectancy by getting a serious handle on this in 2015 rather than wanting to be the “big” 300lb guy.

Face it. You’re fat and probably unhealthy. When’s the last time you had a full checkup and blood work?
Before you dive into PL training, you might seriously get a few things under control. Nothing wrong with being leaner, as this is not only healthier, but will bring you into a lower PL weight class where your base strength would be at a better coefficient.

Welcome. The Over 35 forum is a great place to log. Nice, knowledgeable folks. Lots who compete in strongman and PLing.

There isn’t much to post. My job doesn’t allow for a regular training schedule. It also makes it difficult to eat the way I want. But my job is extremely physical. So I do get tons of exercise.

I did get bloodwork done several months ago when I contracted a UTI. It didn’t show anything unusual. I’m one of those fat guys that doesn’t really seem to suffer from it the way people seem to think is inevitable.

I’m going to lose weight. It’s inevitable. I was just saying that I’m not trying to be a fitness model. Mass is my primary goal. So I’d be perfectly happy at 15-20% bodyfat.

you should post up what you eat either here or in the supps/beginners section maybe and ask for help.

there are many knowledgeable posters here who can give you tons of tips on how to plan and improve your nutrition regardless of your working circumstances.

if you learn to plan and prepare properly you can make monumental improvements to your diet which will have huge benefits to your health and body fat levels.

good luck.

UTI? You need to stop banging skanks. :stuck_out_tongue:

All the best to you, AG!
