Just Moved to Albuquerque

Im a 22 year old male who recently moved to Albuquerque to finish up my college degree at the University of New Mexico.

Having trouble finding stuff to do. Anyone know the area/lived here and have any ideas of social things on the weekends that might be interesting even if you go alone? Looking for something with people around my age group, something along the lines of a college to mid 20’s bar or really anything.

Most of the bars etc. I see seem to be artsy or for older adults in Nob Hill, I went to school and worked in Saint Louis which has a great social scene and sort of disappointed with what I’ve seen here so far.

Does this help?

This made me smile when I thought it said “Artem”.

Dude, Albuquerque is awesome. There’s a lot of shit to do, good music scene, great beer/food.

I went to grad school about 90 miles south of Albq in Socorro and worked in Albq. If you’re into outdoors, you can spend a lifetime there. If you’re near UNM then everything is pretty close.

I go out there once in awhile on business in Alb. It’s easy to get around. I hadn’t been out there in 12 years and it was like I never left.

I lived there for a couple of months on a consulting gig and I never found much to do. I wasn’t there on weekends though. It was a decent place though. Generally clean and easy to get around. Good places to eat. I liked watching the thunder storms roll in.

Sorry. I got nothing.

Don’t forget to eat some steak fingers.

You know what’s funny is that they say “You either LOVE New Mexico or you HATE New Mexico”. I absolutely loved it out there. I was going to school for Geology (great place for that), I love the food and all the outdoors stuff, the sun, the climate, plus the ‘quirkiness’ of the whole place.

My wife absolutely, positively, 100% fucking HATED it.

That’s why I don’t live there now.

I could probably live there. I didn’t get to enjoy the outdoors much. Fly in on Monday, fly out on Friday. Work in between. Like I said, seemed like a nice enough place.

Having lived here for the last 16 years I would agree with the above points. Either you will like it here or hate it. I would say the night life here is shitty. Bars are only open until 1:30am with last call around 1:15. As for drinking you really only have 2 options: downtown, which = thugs and idiots or Nob Hill which = older crowd. There are plenty of “dives” around town but unless you just start going out and experiencing them you wont know which ones you like. Billy’s Longbar on San Mateo/Montgomery is a cool place with a mixed crowd. Fox and Hound on Jefferson is another place that comes to mind.

As for outdoors/weather I think it’s fucking fantastic. We have very mild weather here and if you like being outdoors there is plenty to do. Grab a trail map and drive up to Sandia Crest. Navajo lake is beautiful, White Sands is close as well as Carlsbad Caverns. There are a lot of natural wonders to see in this state all within 3-4 hours drive.

If you have anything specific you want to know about just ask and I’ll be glad to answer anything I can. Welcome to New Mexico!

PS. yes the people here are very “quirky” but extremely nice!

Thanks. Yeah, I live off Tramway and by some of the trails so I definitely know its a great place for outdoors activities. Nothing better than a good bike ride through the trails or a hike up the mountain. Problem is I’m getting bored on the weekends. Seems like anything anyone my age does in my area is race cars (traded in my 97 cobra after High school for a 2000 suburban, so not an option) or go to home parties (dont know anyone so not an option).

Like you said all the bar areas seem to be either oriented towards the thug scene (worked as a bouncer so not too worried about fights, but at the same time I try to avoid trouble now a days, and weapons seem prevalent here) or for older people in nob hill. Are there any decent places where 20-25 year olds hang out besides UNM campus (seems like everyone is a commuter and hangs out with their HS friends) Ive talked to a few people I’ve met in summer classes at UNM, but they all live like 30 minutes from me. Any suggestions for places in the NE Heights to meet 20-25 year olds?

Sorry dude, you are in Hell. Learn how to hunt and leave that horrid place on the weekends.

Obviously we know who is right in this situation.

I spent 2nd grade through junior year of college in Minnesota. I’ve hunted and fished most of my life. Aint shit to hunt here compared to MN. Fishing isn’t bad, but anything decent is commercialized as hell. For example hit the San Juan, decent, but bumped into people every 10 feet and tons of guides with boats filled of faggots from El Paso. Miss the solitude of the 10k lakes :(. Plus trout sure as hell don’t fight like 40 lb Lake Trout from Superior, or Muskies.

Hunt, NM has some of the best elk populations (beside the White Mountain Apache Indians where they cost 25,000 a head) in the world.

I would suggest tracking them on the weekends and learn their patterns.

From what I’ve heard Elk hunting is pretty comparable to Washington, CO, and Montana, so yes, very good. So, I take back my previous statement about there being nothing to hunt compared to MN.

But…

I’m looking more for places to meet people in my age group on the weekend.

Or at least who “won”.

d00d…Greg Jackson’s MMA is in your town.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&q=jackson's+mixed+martial+arts&fb=1&gl=us&hq=jackson's+mixed+martial+arts&cid=0,0,17827635820712874793&ei=hEVETPLTCYS0lQfr1bzNAg&ved=0CC8QnwIwAQ&hnear=&z=16&iwloc=A

you might meet GSP if you trained there. Nothing beats boredom like working out, especially at a gym where you can punch people in the face.
