Just. Don't. Suck (Part 1)

Oh to be 21 again

Both of them are cool, and I can’t do either.

Diggin’ the tat pic, by the way.

32 at the time. Man, those were the days.

I think I deadlifted 450 a month after this. It’s a technique/power issue. The strength is there.

I’m getting work done on my current tattoo in two weeks and I’ve already tried to convince my artist to start the spartan one, too. He likes to let things heal and add ink over time so I know it’ll take 3-5 sessions for the new one. I’d like for him to work on both in the same session so it doesn’t take all year.

For a tall dude, I would say a 295 pound clean is more impressive, especially since you don’t dive down under the bar in a deep front squat. That bar had a long way to go.

I’ve deadlifts 500lbs, I wouldn’t even have got close to a 300lbs clean, even having trained them pretty consistently at the time. A 300lbs clean is far, far more impressive for my money.

Yeah I agree a 300 lbs clean (power clean at that) is waaay harder

Oh to be 32 again. Lol

Being tall easily makes that lift harder. Strength is certainly there.

How would your shoulder hold up to a lot of power cleans?

Agree, but I think people tend to overplay the “I am taller there everything is harder” card. While there are leverage advantages to being smaller, there are plenty of offsetting advantages to being taller.

Not at all suggesting anyone here is specifically doing that, it is just a strange trope that’s out there.

It never bothered me in the past. For now, the only issue is a bad catch and that’s improving over time.

I don’t know of it’s a height thing or just a proportion thing, but I’m better at pulling. My best front squat is 270 or 275. I wonder how many other people out there can power clean more than they front squat.

I tend to think that is mostly a propotions thing. But you say yourself that you don’t really focus on the squatting, so it is kinda self-fulfilling.

Another thing to consider, which matters where power is concerned: while on the one hand you have a greater distance you have to clean a weight, you will also naturally generate more speed. I think this starts as a disadvantage for a tall person, but as you get better at it I believe it will become an advantage on the whole.

I focused on squats after I hit a 315 power clean. It was before I was vain enough to record my lifts. I thought I could improve my power clean by improving my front squat. The end result was a torn hip labrum and surgery.

I tried front squats once after surgery and ended up back in physical therapy. It was almost another year before I didn’t have pain.

F front squats.

Time: 47 minutes. Pro’s: no nausea. I did a good warm up and waited longer after eating my bagel. I also ate two Starbursts after the warm up. Also, no joint pain with bands. My triceps training has been bugging my elbows which is a first in my lifting career. I don’t have time for that nonsense. I’m happy that I finally remembered to use my new bands. Shoulder work felt different but I still got a pump. I’m headed in to work now. I’m scheduled for noon to midnight but if it’s slow then I’ll probably get done around 10.

Have you always had the nausea while training or is it recent?

Been wondering the same thing. Sounds odd, but your pace is high.

I’ve experienced it in the past and had a good handle on it but the giant sets are the cause. The new format has more rest between sets of the same exercise but less rest between bouts of exertion.

That’s ridiculous
