The work gym officially closed today. That eliminates my lunch break workouts unless I want to come home and wear my uniform inside to change. Guess I could change in the garage…

Work seems to be gearing up for the outbreak. We’re barely responding to any calls. They asked my unit which shift we would prefer to work as a beat officer - and 1st isn’t an option. They’re planning for officers to get infected and miss work.
On a happy note, I finished up my last case for a while. I’ve worked on it for a week and the short version is that I “arrested” a lady for stealing a wallet and using the victim’s bank cards six times. By arrest, I mean I issued her a notice to appear in court because they don’t want us to take people to jail for minor property crimes. Oh, well. The end result is the same.
You might as well just get a warrant ready. At least where I live, no one shows up for their court dates, which means all the idiots I help get arrested just end up wandering around a couple days later.
This is only the third time I’ve contacted my suspect (since switching to this position). The first resulted in me booking the guy for nine felonies. The second was a phone conversation where the suspect admitted to burglary from auto but “it was a misunderstanding”. I still need to charge her but the virus has delayed that. And today was the third.
I’ve just been issuing warrants so they can be surprised. I also hope the arresting officers will get some dope or other stolen property when they make the arrest.
By doing what I did today, I just skipped the trip to jail (which I enjoy). Everything else is and will be the same.
I’m in a unique position. I have a beat to manage but it’s quiet for now. This gives me time to do what I want so I look at all of the burglary to autos and unlawful use of financial card cases in my Bureau. We have four Bureaus and a population of 380,000+.
The sad truth is that every one of these cases are made over the phone and ignored. They don’t get assigned to a Detective. Nothing. I love the freedom of my job so I’m making sure I justify my existence. There are a lot of people who get to my position and then do absolutely nothing. They take advantage of the take home car and a great schedule. I don’t want to be that guy.
I’m probably the only officer focusing on these crimes in the city. I’m also probably one of the only officers charging cases. Initially I was just notifying our Investigations sections. I’d tell the supervisor I identified the suspect and ask them to assign the case to a Detective. Sometimes they would, but a lot of times they wouldn’t. That pissed me off. I acknowledged that I was just adding to the Detectives’ already high case load so I asked if I could charge my own cases and just finish what I started. They approved it so I just meet with the City Prosecutor whenever I finish a case. I get the satisfaction of getting charges filed and it improves the stats for larceny and financial crimes. Win-win.
Oh, and the victim’s are pretty excited about it, too. I just wish I had time to do more.
Our work gym closed 2 weeks ago.
I love you’re still a cop J, by that I mean you’re still a knight in shiny armour rescuing the maiden virgin.
That’s how I see myself at least.
Love to go for the minor cases, just go out and bother the bad guys bothering others. We’re the only ones doing it.
The reward: a victim that feels somebody did something.
You’re a great dude for sure J.
Thanks, gents. I just finished speaking with a juvenile who admitted to stealing a debit card from a school locker and using it twice at the mall. Another paper arrest, but that’s how they prefer we handle the juvenile cases anyway. I’ll meet with him and his mother tomorrow to sign the paperwork and make it official.
Unfortunately, this kid’s mom works at the Juvenile Detention Facility…
There’s a disconnect at home. The boy said he doesn’t get along well with her. He also has problems with impulse control and his mood. He was also almost my size at age 15+. I’m not sure how to get him to straighten up but we talked for a bit.
I feel like this would (maybe) be a big help. I see so many kids and parents go their entire lives never actually having a conversation with each other, or even really being aware of what’s going on in their lives. How could we expect anything but problems from that?
EDIT: Sorry, if it wasn’t clear, I meant the talk you had with the kid.
Tonight’s session felt good and moved quick even though it was almost the same duration (40 minutes). The only variable from yesterday to today is food. I ate oatmeal for one meal and steak and veggies for the other. Oatmeal was first yesterday and second today. Maybe I was running low on fuel yesterday since I ate it earlier in the day.

Unfortunately, I’ve noticed a correlation between single leg work and my hip. If I do it (specifically RFESS) then I’m good. If I slack off then I start to get tight again. It means I have to do dreadful single leg work if I want to stay healthy.
Well, I planned to do cardio and PT when I got home from work. I’m sitting by the fire pit instead. I just finished my first beer and preceded that with two shots of Apple Crown. It’s my Friday. Don’t judge me.
