Woke at 245.2 lbs. I have really stabilized here. I need to suck it up and eat a bit more.

CONDITIONING
Basketball! I went to the gym and just planned to run around and shoot for 15 minutes because I only had 30 minutes left in the Kid Zone. I ended up sneaking in one game to 10 and we play by 1s. It was probably good to stop there. I got about 20 minutes of continuous movement from it and still made it to the Kid Zone on time. Tomorrow I plan to play much longer since I’m not lifting. I won’t get to play Wednesday because I have an interview at work at 1pm._
Last night my hip and SI joint were a bit achey so I drank about 12 ounces of wine to take the edge off. My eating schedule was off and I ended up eating a cheeseburger at 9pm. I’m kind of surprised I wasn’t heavier this morning for to that late food.
It’s funny how a month ago I had to check myself with my eating and now I’m stuck. Oh, well. My goal for October 1st is 246-247. I’m within reach of the bottom end. The downside is all of this is that I think I’m going to fall short of 260 by the end of the year. I have three months which means I can only gain about 10 lbs if I stay on the low end of what’s possible. I might hit 15 lbs after holiday eating. I won’t have any reason to hold back
Basketball 2 games. I was active for about 50 total minutes. Basketball sucked today. We had 23 people but these idiots would rather sit out than use both courts. It’s 10 on and 10 off each game so I played, sat, played, and left.
Last day of the intensification phase. My next workout will be day one of the REALIZATION phase!

I had an interview for work today for a full time position at the Training Academy. I heard 10 people put in for the four openings. I’m guessing one will go to a female so that leaves me battling eight or nine guys for three spots. Those are good odds but I’m not too optimistic. My interview went well but I’m not sure if it was good enough.
The spots are labeled as full time Defense Tactics Instructor positions. I’m not even a DT instructor now. We have a team that comes off the street to train recruits. I tried for that slot a couple weeks ago and tied for fourth. They only needed two people. It’s tough to compete for spots with only five years with the Department.
Monday is my Practical portion of the process and I have to teach a section of policy with a 10 slide PowerPoint.
Thanks, Mort! I’ll do my best. Our process for this type of stuff is a pain in the ass. The interview is worth 40 points out of 100. The other 60 is figured through a scoring matrix.
15 max points for seniority (I get 3.5).
10 points for discipline and you lose points if you’re on a reckoning period for a screw up.
Education: 10 for masters, 8 for bachelor’s, 6 for associates, and 4 for 1-59 credit hours. (that scale makes sense, right?)
25 points for annual evaluations (I’m at about 21).
That’s all of them. I’m over 10 points behind some people just because of seniority. It’s tough to make that much up in a 40 point interview.
Damn Big J that sucks.
Why can’t they just get the best man for the job.
If I apply for a job and don’t get it, I’m okay with it as long as the other dude is better or equal to me.
I’ll still be cheering for you. Can I send an email to somebody and say that all the way in old Denmark we’ve heard about the fabulous Mr. Maier
I wish it would help! I have some good ideas for developing an officer wellness program and hopefully they pick me based on that. I genuinely want to help our department and I think I showed that. Hopefully that counts for something. We go through this process and get ranked on our point totals. They have to choose someone from the top 3 positions. If I make it to number 6 then I could still get selected if they truly want me. After they took 1-3, I’d be in the 3rd position so it could work. It really depends on whether or not they want me. The scoring is objective so there isn’t a definitive right or wrong answer. If they want someone for the job then they seem to get good scores. And it’s not like they let other applicants sit in on the interviews so there’s no way to know if someone actually did better or worse than you.
If I don’t get it this time then I’ll just keep trying. The downside is that it’s a new position so the people who get the four spots won’t be going anywhere for awhile. I bet some of them finish their careers in these spots so it might be awhile before they’re open again.
heard dat. This scoring system is a good example of politics. But I also suppose that the interviewers and higher-ups view it as a simple way of comparing different candidates. One on hand, someone with 3 credit hours who happens to have really good people skills may score higher than someone with a masters who gets nervous during interviews. On the other hand, experience (generally comes with age I’m assuming) is very important, so I can see why they put weight into seniority and education.
Either way, I hope you get the job. If you don’t, I hope you at least get runner-up. As long as you aren’t in the bottom half, that’ll look good for whatever positions you apply for in the future.
That seniority thing is a tough hill to climb. Where I work it’s all or nothing - If you’re non-union, it’s completely on how you perform and how you interview. If you’re union, assuming you meet the minimum job requirements, it’s 100% seniority. If the other guy has one more day than you, and wants the job, you have no chance.
I feel like there are often times where they just pick who they want. They just make sure they get the most points in the interview. There’s absolutely no way to defend or validate any score.
They throw together this matrix but it’s geared towards seniority. Our eval system is 0-5 points. You’re supposed to be scored/judged on your work for the year. I killed it my first year and I got a 2.71. You know why? Because I hadn’t worked here long enough for a high score.
The same supervisor told my buddy she lowered the scores his sergeant gave him because of his time on the department. Seniority is 15% of the matrix and it also affects your eval score which is 25%.
Our FOP union does some good things for us but the people they really work for are the senior ones. They interfere with everything to make sure the senior guys get first shot at something. It’s frustrating.
Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a perfect system. Merit-based systems are only as good as the judgement and integrity of the people making the decisions. I’m definitely not going to bad-mouth unions, either. There are down sides, and the very worst ones protect the dregs of the group, but they’re a necessary protection in a lot of industries.
Our union fights for our jobs and money. The City usually tries to fire someone for a stupid reason at they fight and win. Sadly, the person usually needs to be fired by the City cites the wrong reason. They operate under the premise of Past Practice so if they let them get away with it then the next person to make the same mistake will be fired.
Union is a necessary evil. Someday I’ll be a senior guy. These spots at the Academy are brand new and I think it’s as close as I’m going to get to using my strength & conditioning background.
I either want to go back to school to be a PE teacher or find a way to work with the Department. Cops need help too. It’d be nice if I didn’t have to start my career over and put my family through hell while I went back to school.
I’m excited about these spots. Part of me thinks I have a chance and part of me says otherwise. I’ll be pretty let down if I don’t get one because it’s the best chance I’ll have for years.
I heard only 10 people applied for four spots. In the future I’m sure at least 10 will apply for one spot.
My family is all military, but a cousin of mine went to St.Louis PD after getting out of the Marines. Ended up being a sniper for SWAT, and absolutely loves the environment. Gets to work out a ton, surrounded by motivated teammates, very professional environment. Sounds like the type of place you would fit in with
Seniority sucks but unfortunately its way most places are
I’ve applied for a few jobs where I’ve unfortunately missed out on selection because of my age, where they’ll hire someone with more “experience”
And it’s in quotations because the experience is only “years on the job” , not more experience within the industry
I know personally I’ve been exposed to many different jobs and have mastered many of the different sub sections within my trade, but someone who has spent an extra 10 years (even though they have only been pigeon holed into one section and I’ve forgotten more then they’ve ever known) they seem to get preference
+1 about the union suggestion, it’s very union Dominated my trade
Also find the more seniority someone has, the more chance that bad habits have crept in, or they’re too stubborn to change their ways when quality control, methods or safety regulations have changed from when they learnt the trade
Not always, but if say +85% of the time it’s true
All you can do is try your absolute best and hope that it’s good enough
