To reach “elite competitor” levels may require something more advanced, but your journey to a 405 squat as well as mine to a 600 deadlift both strongly suggest that the first portion, the part getting you to “stronger than most people in the general population think is possible naturally” can be achieved with simple, consistent, hard work.
So I’ve been thinking. I think with my strength levels now I’m actually wanting to give 5/3/1 a true shot for a few months. I don’t like dealing with percentages so I’ve never truly given 531 a chance but I do agree with all of Jim’s principles that make the program. It would be nice to not have to do ANY thinking when going to the gym and just hit the numbers that are on my excel sheet.
I’ve looked and I think I’d want to start with BBB.
For any of you guys that have done this, how was the experience? How many cycles did you run this for? Anything you would do differently? My body has been pretty achey lately and I think it’s due to the months worth of lower rep work. I think it would be nice for like 8-16 weeks to just focus on some higher reps.
Any opinions? I was thinking of structuring it like this:
It definitely works man, but don’t be discouraged if your top end strength dips off at first. 531 is definitely a long term plan, working from higher rep goals to lower rep goals and peaking from there if you want, or resetting numbers to keep smashing records. Your plan makes sense. Training how you have been, you might actually benefit from more volume on squatting just because of how much you were doing.
Side note, I actually really enjoyed (and am plan on starting back doing) chad Wesley smiths version of 531 progression. I ran it before and really liked the way it ran, but skipped the first 3/2/1 and just moved to the high volume one. This would fit perfectly into the 8-16 week idea you had. He does more volume on the work sets up, and joined with BBB or FSL, SSL, etc, should equate to a decent plan back into lower rep training.
If you read about Jims latest work he basically says to do this:
Pick a TM that’s equal to your 5 RM not grinding reps but strong fast reps.
Then do 2 cycles of 5’s pro with FSL 5x5 (increase weights between cycles)
you then do about 50 reps of each push, pull, single leg or core.
1 week deload
then 1 cycle of PR sets (remember to increase weigh)
then 1 cycle test week. pick your TM AMRAP the shit out of it. If able to do 5 reps or more increase weight do a new program.
I personally do not like 5’s pro, and stick to PR sets.
I haven’t done BBB but a lot likes them. Jim says do BBB sets the same as 531 sets. But in the first book he states it doesn’t matter if you do them opposite days.
You have a copy of Forever right? I think I’ve seen you mention it before.
SVR2 and Pervertor seem like they’d be pretty good fits for what you’re looking for. I’m sure there are others too but those are the first two that come to mind.
Hey, I’m new to the forums. I have Beyond 5/3/1 but for the life of me I can’t find SSF or 3’s PRO explained anywhere, which sucks because I want to run this template for a few cycles. Could you possibly give me a page number or a source where these topics are explained? Thanks. Also, you’re pretty damned strong.
Hey man strange you’d ask me for 5/3/1 info when I am no expert on 531 and I’ve never actually ran it lol. The 531 subsection should answer all your questions on 531 though.
Today is the first day I’ve felt truly strong (even more so than the squat PR). Snatching 185 is pure butter now lol. I feel like I could do 205 or 225 for doubles. The bottom of the snatch felt so stable it was ridiculous lol.
