Nice work! CLosing in on 2X BW squat. V impressive… Keep it rocking.

Thanks. I’ve hit double bw a number of times but 210 after all that volume was ridiculously difficult.

New program, you must be excited though to see where it takes you. Why is it every time I read ‘Smolov’ I say it in my head like “Some more love”

Bench Press (Touch & Go)

45 Lb x 10 reps
95 Lb x 6x6 reps

Low Bar Squat (No Belt)

45 Lb x 5 reps
135 Lb x 3 reps
155 Lb x 3x8 reps
165 Lb x 5 reps
180 Lb x 2x2 reps
190 Lb x 1 reps

Bodyweight
125 Lb

We pushed through very quickly tonight and got out in 30 minutes. I could barely contain my excitement to patch some of the grout in my shower. Yay. Does it get any better? Yesterday I taped drywall around the skylight I’ve had for almost a year.

I’m pretty excited too. The first couple of days were yucky but I’m loving it now. The caveat is that I haven’t even started the real program yet. That starts Friday.

Bench Press (Touch & Go)

45 Lb x 10 reps
102.5 Lb x 7 x 5 reps

Low Bar Squat (No Belt)

45 Lb x 5 reps
135 Lb x 3 reps
155 Lb x 4x5 reps
180 Lb x 3 reps
190 Lb x 2x2 reps
210 Lb x 1 reps

Bodyweight
126.5 Lb

My weight is up a bit. I doubt it has anything to do with the fact that between Frank and I we ate four pints of premium ice cream, had pumpkin ravioli and porterhouse steak plus chips which is unusual for me.

Today was the last day of the pre-smolov and the real deal starts on Friday.

Training is looking solid - smolov is for dedicated crazy people

Bench Press (Touch & Go)
45 Lb x 10 reps
95 Lb x 3 reps
110 Lb x 8x4 reps
115 Lb x 1 reps
120 Lb x 1 reps
125 Lb x 1 reps

Low Bar Squat (No Belt)
45 Lb x 5 reps
135 Lb x 3 reps
165 Lb x 4x9 reps

Bodyweight
125.5 Lb

First day done. It wasn’t so bad. I tried to slow the sets down and recover more but we still finished in 45 minutes even with adding a few bench singles at the end. I think I did those just to stall starting squats. I’m very pleased with those given all the volume I did before them. I think 135 is getting close. 125 was pretty easy.

I’ve been feeling some tightness in my right quad when I’m squatting so I’ve actually been foam rolling for the first time in like, ever.

Who are you calling crazy puppet???

Bench Press (Touch & Go)

45 Lb x 10 reps
95 Lb x 5 reps
115 Lb x 5x 3 reps
115 Lb x 2x2 reps
115 Lb x 1 reps
115 Lb x 2 reps
115 Lb x 7 x 1 reps

Low Bar Squat (No Belt)

45 Lb x 5 reps
135 Lb x 3 reps
165 Lb x 2 reps
180 Lb x 5x7 reps

Bodyweight
128 Lb

I was fat this morning. Bigger than I’ve been since last August. Too much Easter.

Bench was super difficult. It was supposed to be 10 triples. The first five were adequate but quickly devolved into doubles, then singles and took forever.

Squat while not easy, went fine. I’ve been experiencing problems with my IT band and have been rolling it and stretching.

Bench Press (Touch & Go)

45 Lb x 10 reps
97.5 Lb x 6 x 6 reps

Low Bar Squat (No Belt)

45 Lb x 5 reps
135 Lb x 3 reps
165 Lb x 2 reps
190 Lb x 7x 5 reps

Bodyweight
127.5 Lb

This was very hard. Maybe because I squatted yesterday. My IT bands are killing me to the degree that it’s quite painful to go past parallel. The last set was complete shit and all high.

Next squat day is Wednesday. I’m going to try it with my SBD knee sleeves and see if that helps. In the mean time, I’ve been rolling them out with a marble rolling pin and horse liniment to loosen them up . If they don’t ease off a bit, my smolov experiment will be short lived.

Ack.

I am avidly following. Your weights are brutal. Perhaps follow the programming but with more rest time? Like never back-to-back days? It is grueling. If anyone can do it, though, it’s you.

Hang in there. The first 7 x 5 day was the hardest day for me by far. Absolutely brutal. And eat. And sleep. And eat and sleep some more.

Did you have any physical problems? I found it hard but I find a lot of things hard. I just don’t know if it’s wise to continue with my legs feeling like they are. I hope they back off but the pain is getting pretty bad.

My recollection is that my hips and elbows got fried and my lower back felt almost swollen most of the time that I wasn’t under the bar. The weird thing is towards the end of the base phase about the only time I felt comfortable was when I was under the bar; I actually felt stronger under the bar as the program progressed even though I ached the rest of the time. The last day of the base I cruised through the triples and for grins I then hit my previous best-ever 1rm for 6 freaking reps. I still consider it my best day squatting ever. The long and the short of it is only you can judge if you are injured or if the pain is intolerable, but week one is going to be brutal while your body adjusts to the volume and intensity.

How much do you sit at work?

I am usually very mobile at work - lately as I move up the food chain-
I am sitting more and more- and have had more pain - because of it.
Its often not the IT bands for me- its the rectus femoris
basically when I squat multiple times a week I have to roll my legs to death
with a pvc pipe

Bench Press (Touch & Go)

45 Lb x 10 reps
95 Lb x 3 reps
105 Lb x 5x5 reps
105 Lb x 2x4 reps

Low Bar Squat (No Belt)

45 Lb x 2x5 reps
135 Lb x 3 reps
165 Lb x 2 reps
185 Lb x 1 reps
200 Lb x 10x3 reps

Bodyweight
126 Lb

I finished week one. I wasn’t sure I would after Monday. My IT bands were a mess and by the end my legs felt like broken glass coming out of the hole. I went to see my ART guy who said I had very little glute activation so my legs were taking most of the load causing the issues. I started some good glute activation stuff. I was able to do the squats tonight but there was still a fair amount of pain particularly near the end.

Bench was pretty tough. It was supposed to be 7 sets of 5 but the last two were only four. Friday is supposed to be 8 x 4 at 112.5. We’ll see how it goes. I may end up dropping the weight a bit.

I am impressed that you’re sticking with it.

Savage.

Bench Press (Touch & Go)

45 Lb x 10 reps
95 Lb x 3 reps
112.5 Lb x 2x4 reps
110 Lb x 2 x 4 reps
107.5 Lb x 4x4 reps

Low Bar Squat (No Belt)

45 Lb x 5 reps
135 Lb x 3 reps
170 Lb x 4x9 reps

Bodyweight
126 Lb

Bench continues to get more difficult. Today was supposed to be 112.5 for 8x4 but as indicated, that didn’t happen. Bench started to fall apart last Sunday right after I started the real smolov squat cycle. My issue seems to be getting tight on the bench which I suppose isn’t super surprising given that my back is pretty smoked from squatting. My last smolov bench day is Sunday so it won’t be an issue after that.

Squatting, while a bit pukey by the end wasn’t bad and my legs were pretty much pain free. I can take difficult but broken glass painful, not so much.
