Congratulations on a strong meet. Great job grinding out the squat and all of the benches were smoked.

Wow, squat no. 2 was almost a full good morning. Way to grind that out!
I may have been impregnated by my back spotter
Squats were the worst. As time went on, things cleared up a bit.

I’m glad I do push/pulls only as I wouldn’t want to get pregnant at my age.
Gosh. I am just so damn impressed. Those numbers are phenomenal raw at your BW. And thank you so much for the video. I will watch it many times:)
So pleased for you, Julie. Congratulations.

Thanks Karen. I ended up having a lot of fun. My biggest bit of learning was that I need a singlet with longer legs. I bought a Titan one with the maple leaf on it.

Nice. You are all legs!
I bet it felt relaxing going raw. Equipped lifting adds so much stress. All the timing of the dressing, wrapping, binding, you name it. Time for you to relax!

Awesome job! Sorry to hear you weren’t feeling well on meet day.
I watched the video, honestly I didn;t see why you were red lighted on the third squat attempt. Did they say you went down?
I didn’t actually include my third squat in the video. It was just the first and second. I couldn’t lock out my third.
Well that would explain it. I odn’t know why I thought I saw 3 attempts. Hmmmm
For comparison, my first nationals was in 2009 and I competed equipped. I was the same body weight. I squatted 107.5, benched 60 and deadlifted 130 for a 297.5 total. This total was 2.5kg (105, 55, 135) lower but unequipped. Age at first nationals 44 age now, 49.
My hats off to you. Keep doing the hard work. Awesome.
It’s back to porridge today. I’ve decided to dip my feet into the smolov for squat pool. Frank talked me into doing the two week prep and after this evening I’m glad I am. I’m also running smolov jr. for bench. I’ve run it a few times in the past with decent success. I attribute my moderate success on bench at nationals with simply benching more.
Squat
bar-2x5
135-3
155-3x8
165-5
180-2x2
190-1
Bench
bar-10
90-6x6
We were in and out in 40 minutes. On wednesday I think I’ll bench first. Also, when I start the full on smolov for squat, I think I’ll start on Wednesday so the my squat and bench volumes aren’t the same each day. I don’t want to be squatting and benching 10 triples on the same day.
Very interested to follow your Smolov adventure.
I am actually surprised that you’re back at it so soon. Must be feeling pretty good after this meet?
I started with bench today. My legs were lift up like crazy after Monday. It’s amazing what volume at light weight can do after you’re used to triples, doubles and singles. At my job, we are on the second floor and reception is down a long(ish) flight of stairs. It got to the point where, when I forgot some paperwork upstairs, I just wanted to fling it down and hope someone picked it up and took it where it belonged.
I’m very glad I decided to start with the two week lead in.

Can’t remember. With Smolov, do you base your programming off a true 1 RM or a goal of where you want to be?

I’m not entirely certain. I used a number nearish my max that produced a cycle that looked challenging but doable. The actual cycle is monday-4x9, Wednesday-5x7, Friday 7x5 and Saturday 10x3. The first week will finish with 200 for 10 triples.
Now I know why I thought snap was doing smolov - I got threads mixed up.
Most folks start with their current training max, not a percentage of but I don’t think it hurts to back off 10%. I did a cycle after I had plates removed from my arm and couldn’t do anything else. I was beat to hell following the protocol as prescribed.

^This is really awesome.
With squats as big as yours, I’ll be interested to see where Smolov takes you.
Awesome! Good luck with the cycle.

This felt the best yet for squats. My legs have loosened up a bit and the fives are much nicer than eights. Tomorrow, however, is a repeat of the days with eights and ten triples on bench. I prefer few sets and higher reps on bench. I find the set up almost as taxing as the lift.

Week one smolov for bench is done. The ten set days are the worst on bench. Squat is feeling better as my legs chill out a bit. I think I have perma leg pump at the moment.
Also I’ve been super hungry. I don’t think it’s related to training because the volume increase is pretty recent. Maybe I have a tape worm.
Despite saying I would touch deadlift, I thought I’d throw them in today because next weekend I’ll have started the ‘for real’ smolov for squat and give how deads felt today, they will be no go for the next month. I still didn’t throw a belt on for anything.
