My favorite thing about European criticism of American politics is the extent to which our friends across the pond are existentially indebted to us with each passing day. I am not talking about the World Wars. Rather I refer to the fact that the present balance of the world remains in Western favor by way and only by way of American might and influence. To take one small example, I was just reading a book in which the argument was made that EU member states have become so techno-militarily dependent on the U.S. that they essentially can’t conduct more than a minor military operation without American help. Like I said, that’s just one tiny example.
So, the next time a European makes to hate on the terrible racist 'Murican people (and certainly there are many terrible and racist Americans – as if the same could not be said of the hooligans who join in Nazi chants after soccer games in Europe), please go ahead. But remember, while you do, that those 'Murican people pay and sink into debt and volunteer for a (yes, flawed) government and military apparatus without which you are an infant left to be suckled or mauled by real wolves.

The fact that we now have two intellectually lazy people trying to project other random people on the internet being “racist” onto those on this board who just generally don’t like Obama, rather than offering in any way some sort of “hey Obama is actually good at XYZ” is very telling.
The idea that “you just don’t like him because he’s black” should be taken serious when stated on a predominately Anti-Contemporary AMerica Liberal board is laughable on its face.

I don’t support Obama, I just acknowledge open chauvanist jibes leveled at him by conspiracy driven right winders who claim he is a secret muslim trying to steal guns and who coincidentally use terms like Obummer or Obomber and are then offended anyone suspects them of being racists.

Oh and by the way I think the U.S is the freest and most democratic society on earth, is built on the best framework in the constitution and is far better than where I live.
I also think when people get defensive and chauvinist the likes of Thomas Paine and those whose ideas and words lead to the current society you were just lucky enough to be born into, roll over in their graves.
Tom Paine was more progressive than many posters in this thread. When a dude who died 200 years ago is more forward thinking than you in 2015 you might have some issues.
