Joker Sets and Training Maximally

Jim,currently I’m using the training maximally programme from Beyond and really enjoying it. I’m working up to a plus set with my TM, one or two joker sets followed by some down sets.

You recently have suggested joker sets every six weeks or so. Is that something you would suggest still when training maximally? To me, it seems if you are training maximally, you should be going as heavy as you can on any given day (with good form etc)?

Does anyone else have an opinion?

Cheers.

Im currently running this programming and I personally do jokers only every 6 weeks, IF I feel like my body is still prepared for it after PR set.

PR set and submax work (5x5@75% for me) is what makes you stronger, when consistent. Couple heavy singles every 6 weeks (after pushing the PR set) is enough for me.

This makes sense and I have no doubt you’ll get stronger as a result.

Do you think though that there is a contradiction here though in that you are “training maximally, sub-maximally”?

Interested to see what people think of this programme.

Way I see it: PR and Jokers = max effort.
Down sets= Sub max.
All inclusive.

However you feel is best. Sub max training is what I prefer when training others. If you feel you need something different and can make it work, you should do it.

Thanks Jim.
