John's Training Log - Road to 225-315-405

Yes and no. Different muscle groups respond to different styles of training. However my thoughts are that it’s just difficult to notice progress on such comparitively light weight.

Currently doing PR sets and pyramiding down (max reps on both). I will probably try a higher volume approach on the next cycle, maybe a 10x5 FSL or something.

That’s pretty much exactly what Wendler recommends in his “5/3/1 for hardgainers” program because he believes it works best for press.

20mins treadmill.
Circuit of 10 reps each, 5 sets with 1 min rest.
KB Swings
KB DL Jump
RDL
Push up
Mountain Climbers

W2D3
Squat 5x10 @155 lbs SS: Chin ups 5x5
Bench 120x3 140x3 155x9 140x8 120x11
Ab Roll out 3x10 SS: DB Shrugs 3x10

Everything felt heavier today. I guess it’s one of those days, no PR on bench.

These things happen, don’t sweat it unless it becomes a pattern.

Yeah, so far it’s only a day so I’m not too worried. The 2 days off should help

Won’t be logging workouts in here for a while. Just had our daughter yesterday, I am super happy and super tired at the same time haha I can now understand why fathers can be so overprotective, I will literally kill and die for this little one.

Thanks man. Any advice for a new father?
Workout wise, I’ll be running the 2-days 531 RP program once everything settles. Probably in a week or two.

Advice for the little one or for training? For the little one, routine was no.1 for us. A solid, daily routine from the get go was absolutely king in making sure they (and you) get reliable sleep. For training? I didn’t train much/at all when we first had my little one. There were a fair number of issues and complications that meant I was already at full capacity and workouts would have been “over the edge”, so other posters would be in a better place to answer that.

I guess my question was for both. At what age did you little one sleep through the night?

Yeah, training definitely takes a back seat when it comes to family.

Our second slept through (6+ hours solid) within a month, barring illness. She had the routine we’d set for little man from day 1.

On the subject of training: I gave up training when our first came along and only started again about 3.5 years later so I am definitely the wrong person to ask. My advice would be to notndo that unless you absolutely have to, it’s a long, long way back.

Check out @littlesleeper’s log. He recently had a baby too. Still gets to squeeze in some workouts although he’s currently not on 5/3/1 if I’m not mistaken

That’s awesome man. I would definitely love to hear what your routine is/was if it’s not too much typing lol

Will definitely try to train as much as I can.

Thanks man, I will definitely check out his log.

Wow. Dude’s a beast!

Haha yeah, he is. That’s also considering he hasn’t trained as optimally over the past few weeks. Nice guy too.

I honestly don’t remember I’m afraid, it was several years ago. I remember that she got up same time everyday, no matter when she woke up. First wake up she was changed, fed and put back to sleep until a more sensible time. She’s nearly 2 now and she still gets changed and put back down to sleep around 5am. Meals are at the same times everyday, to within 5 minutes. Naps at the same time everyday, etc. Night time routine, including bath when she was able at exactly the same time and in exactly the same way every night.

I don’t think the routine itself is too important, just the fact that you’re consistent with it, particularly in the run up to bed time.
