Joel's New Mass Program

Question regarding the loads to be used in Joel’s mass program:

Are we to use various loads while performing the given exercise so long as we remain in the given rep range?

For example, weeks 1-4 its 5 sets of 8-12 reps–are we to use progressively heavier loads, starting with weight that allows us to approach failure at 12 reps and finishing with weight that causes us to approach failure at 8? Or, should we use a constant weight that will cause us to fail somewhere in the range, thereby asking us to push as far as possible to the top of the range???

For phase 1, the load should be your 12RM and it should remain constant throughout the entire workout. Due to neuromuscular fatigue, your reps will slightly drop off with each progressive sets. Plan your rests periods so you don’t fall below 8 reps on any set. For example, you should get 12 clean reps on your first set, and may only need a min or so rest to get 10-11 reps. By the 4th or 5th set, you may need to rest a minute and 1/2 to allow for further recovery in order to be able to perform at least 8 reps.
