Jeremy's 1st Powerlifting Comp Adventure at Age 40

Hello everyone. Longtime lurker here and I figured I might as well join in on the fun. I’ve been training for years as a bodybuilder but decided I like food more than abs. So, I’m a powerlifter now. I just registered for my first competition which is in 12 weeks. I’ve been following 5/3/1, but am switching to a program from Calgary Barbell for the next 3 months. Attached are some videos from the last few weeks. The squat and deadlift show an AMRAP set, while the bench is a 1RM attempt.

Little bit about me: 40 years old (until November), 5’10", about 230 pounds. I signed up for the raw 242 division, master’s and open.

Please feel free to critique my form. It won’t hurt my feelings. Much.
I look forward to getting to know everyone here. Stay strong!

Hey J-R welcome to the log section.
I’m in, good luck with the preparation for the meet.
It’s a pretty fantastic community around here.
Lots of folks with knowledge on just about everything.

Take a look around @simo74 is doing his first competition this weekend. @MarkKO knows a lot about powerlifting.

@mortdk is arguably the nicest guy on the forum, and also cares enough to call you out if you do dumb shit (which I’m glad he has for me).

You got any questions, ask away. I know a little about powerlifting, but luckily it’s enough that I know it isn’t much.

Mort is being nice. I’m the wrong side of 40 too and doing my first novice comp this weekend to see if I like it. Marks more experienced, heavier and stronger than me but I’m more than happy to answer questions, call you out if you slack off or just shoot the breeze. Welcome

Congrats on your PRs this last weekend! I only read back a couple weeks in your training log, but it was exciting reading about your progress up to the event. I’m super excited and nervous for January.

Thanks for signing up to follow along guys! It’s nice to meet all of you. I appreciate the support as I embark on this new experience.
Since my first post here, I took four days off from lifting. Great way to start my training log, haha. My wife and I went on a multi-day backpacking trip. It was a blast (except for the rain), but I obviously couldn’t lift during the hike and my food intake wasn’t quite the same. So, after a day of recovery I was back at it today. This new routine I’m following is quite a departure from the 5/3/1 I was doing before. Today was:
Deadlifts - 4x6 at 360lbs
3 count paused bench - 3x4 at 235lbs
Safety bar squats - 3x4 at 8RPE, this came to 335 for all three sets.
Wide grip seated rows - didn’t keep track of these weights, just went by feel.

What do you guys think of this depth? I like to do box squats since they seem to make my old man knees feel a little better and safer. The box has a 12" side and a 14" side. This is to the 14" side and I keep wondering if this is a white light depth. I’ve tried the 12" side with a mat under it to get it to 13", but it seems a little too deep. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks J, it was a nervous but very fun day.
I’m no judge but that depth looks fine, @MarkKO is a better judge than me. I am assuming you will be doing some squatting without a box so you get used to depth without it ?

That’s a depth that’s very risky. I’ve seen squats pass with it, and I’ve seen many more get red lights. If that’s the 14, 12 would be perfect.

I will definitely be doing squats with no box before the meet. What do you recommend? Should I stop with the box now?

Thanks Mark, I’ll flip the box over next squat day.
