This is a pretty great thread. Will definately be touring Japan within the next 2-3 years for vacation, and I will be hitting up our T-Nation ex-pat brethren over there prior.
So far my only experiences with Japan have been a 2 hour layover in Tokyo and gratuitous use of the term Hadouken.
EDIT- also I am a big fan of the book Ugly Americans. Always makes me wonder about the description of how ‘user friendly’ the country is for ex pats and all the crazy sex underground fetish shit.
Waittz,
Japan used to be a country that had vending machines selling used panties.
If you are looking for crazy sex underground fetish shit, this is the place to go.
I swear I’ve ran into half a dozen sex and fetishshops during my last tour in Akihabara Electric city while looking for a decent poster featuring a nude japanese woman (or two) for my bathroom.
Besides all that crazy stuff…
It’s a great choice to spend your vacation there, you won’t regret it.

Man do I feel a generation gap. I can’t even fathom how someone who has an interest in Japan/has lived in Japan forever could not know Ryu or what a hadouken is.
Also if you guys like or eat yogurt at all, you need to go to one of the fancier supermarkets and look for a product called German Yogurt. How did it take me four years to find this stuff?

Ha ha.
Yeah, I was here when 500 yen came as a bill, and the foreign registration “card” was a little brown book.
And you’d be shocked to know the stuff that I don’t know about Western pop culture anymore.
A while back, I asked my niece who Justin Bieber was, and she laughed at me. :-(
I envy you. I would give a lot to not know who Justin Bieber is.
When I lived in France for a couple years as a kid, I watched that translated into French.
And then, 5+ years later, they rebranded it and brought it to the US as Power Rangers, and changed out all the actors… just kept the fight scenes.
Geez. There are so many series like that lol.

And hey, don’t knock pop culture. It’s the only culture most people here have!
Lol just realized the truth in your statement… The only culture most known in the United States that I have seen has been celebrity culture; the really uninteresting one lol
This thread has gone from something one can just read and go “Oh, how strange” into something awesome. I had chatted with Cortes many a year ago about Japan. I don’t like places with tons of people and he rightly pointed out that there are pretty isolated places to be had for hiking/camping. In my defense, you can fit about 3 Japan’s into Ontario where I live but they have almost 3 times the population of Canada. In my defense, of course…
And thank you all for crushing my hopes of ever mastering the Japanese language. I had decided to pick it up but after hearing you all talk, the success I have experienced so far seems light years away from the time it will take. Thanks, you bastards. Side note, I do hate some of the subtitles on Japanese movies. And I mean the official subs, not some fan subs, those always seem better for some reason. How sad is it when I can tell that what they have written isn’t what is being said and I don’t speak the language. Ex. Someone says “Ohayo” and the subtitle was “Good morning, Paul. Breakfast is almost ready”.
But damn if I don’t love a bunch of Japanese bands. Just a sampling
The Blue Hearts
Stance Punks - I love that nobody pays attention to him. North America, every dumbass would jump in front of the camera
and the amazing Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. One of my favourite singers, I listen to his other bands as well. This one is from the last song of the last encore of the last show of the last concert tour. Watched the DVD, from the Burning Motors Go Last Heaven tour, perfect. They started with Drop and end with Sekai no Owari, my favourite of their songs. Of you like, check out Akage no Kelly, Revolver Junkies, Jenny, Drop, and the whole damn concert. I always wanted one of their concert shirts.
and just because of the singer(from Thee Michelle Gun Elephant), here is The Birthday(same singer and drummer)
