Does the Fat Gripz help with elbow tendinitis?
Matty - Not really. I’m actually getting a bit of tendinitis in my elbow from doing pull ups with them. So I think they are pretty good but they definitely have their limitations.

Damn, Im getting it bad from the BB rows, I did a bunch of curls and eventually after the third set the pain started to alleviate, I wanted to do hang cleans today but thought better of it because of elbow issues.
That sucks. I’d just lay off the rows for a spell and see if it clears up. I’m a big fan of dips too (even though I haven’t done them for a while and they actually help out with my elbow. I’m going to make a more concerted effort to stretch out my wrist and see if there’s an impact with that too.

Conditioning, abs, and stretching. I’m doing the bike right now and do 60 seconds of high resistance and high speed and 75 seconds of low resistence and medium speed. I want to work up to 30 minutes (about 12 cycles) and I did 9 today. I really love the sled work but it’s hell on my plantar and I do a LOT of jumping with my son over the weekend so I try to keep it in check so I don’t end up doing any really permanent “I need surgury” type of damage.

Squats: 3bar, 135, 135, 185, 225, 245, 275
Deads: 3135, 225, 5315, 1365, 405. 6415
GMs: 5135, 185, 205, 225
Quick session today. Just the basics. I’m typing like Kevin now.
I do believe that I’ll start 5/3/1 on Friday. Yay.

Dang James, your squat seems to be going very well. Little behind on logs lately, what was that 375 box squat?
On the fat grips, I have a pair and agree with you, they’re great for curls but most other things they’re just ok. Sometimes I’ll use them for lighter deads, haven’t tried them for pressing yet but will. Keep killing it.
531 for PLing or the regular kind? Lord Wendler has like 30 531s now lol
dday - Yeah, squat is coming along thanks to the frequency. The only thing I’m really changing is the programming for my squats. When I went into three day a week squatting I just was winging it and probably went too heavy too often. Which works for a while but becomes unsustainable over time. Yes, the 375 was a box squat.
matty - It’s a full body template from 5/3/1 - second edition. Yes, there’s a lot of different options out there for 5/3/1 which is one reason that I keep going back to it. I like the flexibility.

excellent work
squats - that is allot of volume spread out
I think I need some fat grips next
damn you enablers.
I would like to move towards a full body session a few times a week
and focus on conditioning on another day-
too many ideas to keep it organized
Wow, man. Thanks for those hise shrugs, I can’t wait to try those. We may need to get your log stickied. LOTS of good stuff in here. Excellent work bro.
James, grats on the progress in 2011.
Just a quick question - how are you planning to set up the 5/3/1 full body?
Cheers
Thanks Kevin. I agree about too many ideas to keep organized which is why I like these simple templates. I need to figure out my conditioning more and want to add even more mobility work into the mix.
Thanks Tyrfryr. I like the Hise shrugs more than traditional shrugs. I just don’t have a place to put shrugs right now so I dropped them.
Boonyx. Thanks! The template is essentially a squat movement, press movement, and a pull movement each day. I’m going to add calves and pull ups though. I’m really doing a full body session now so I think I’m ready for the extra work.

Squats: 3135, 135, 185. 5225, 250. 10280
DB Press: 31070 (w/ fat gripz)
DB Row: 310*140
Calf work
I’ve been on the road since Tues (luckily I rented the Yukon XL again…I’m sold on those damn things) but I was pretty wiped for this session. I literally drove from my meetings up north through all the traffic and straight to the gym.
I’m going to add calf work at the end of my sessions since they are pretty compact now. I’m also going to include band pull aparts and pull ups as part of my warm up.
It’s been a long time since I’ve done DB presses and I did these pretty slowly and concentrated on the reps. I’ll be sore tomorrow. I’m going to start doing the last rep of my DB rows as an all out set from now forward and try to beat my maxes each week.

15 Jan
Face pulls / fat grip pull ups (with thumbless grip): 5 sets
Calf raises: 3 sets F
Squats: 5bar, 135, 185, 205, 225
Floor press: 5135, 215, 225, 7240
Pendlay rows: 55225
Yesterday I was showing off for my son and my thigh took a direct hit when I missed a jump. I could barely move my leg yesterday and I couldn’t even tie my shoes. Today it’s sore but not as bad and I used a knee sleeve around my thigh which worked as a compression garment which helped out considerably. It’s still sore and squats completely sucked.
I’m doing floor presses now in order to give me shoulder a break. I think that I shot a little too high for my working max as I was only able to get 7 but I’m going to work with it and see how far I get.
I warmed up with face pulls and fat grip pull ups (done with a thumbless grip). The thumbless grip was a really good idea and my elbow great. Looks like I’m sticking with this for a while.

I like that bike workout you did above. I need to do that myself. Good luck on the 5/3/1
Loving the Fat Gripz!
I’m adding them to one movement per upper body workout.
Hope the leg is feeling better.
Workouts are looking great. Funny story you showing off for your son and injuring yourself. Sounds like something I would do. I hope your shoulder feels better.
At my size (fatness), anything else fat=bad. Good work, man.
G1 - Thanks. I’m going to try that for sprints and bike and see how it goes. I like 5/3/1 but am still going to modify it slightly to meet my needs.
ddot - All these av changes are freaking me out. I typically use these to recognize folks…
Leg is better although I found out that I have a really badly bruised shin too. Didn’t realize it until I deadlifted. I was really not a fan of the FG until just recently. I definitely like them for curls and pressing movements. For pull ups I’ve found that if I use a thumbless grip my elbow doesn’t bother me so they are going back into rotation.
eco - Thanks and yeah, I think every dad does something like that. The worst part is that you have to totally play it off and drive through it.
Tyr - haha…yeah, but in this case fat = good
