This is a deload week for me so I’m only going to squat. I wanted to try out box squats as I’ve never really given them much of a chance and I ended up liking them. I filmed them but I need to edit the vids so that they are right side up. I really concentrated on sitting back and keeping the arch in my back. The film looked OK but obviously my form is far from perfect.
I think I’ll do box squats for my next cycle of the Juggernaut and see what they do for me. I figure the best case scenario is that my squat form greatly improves and I get stronger. The worst case scenario is that it simply stays the same but I can’t see the worst case scenario happening.

I just can’t see that worst case scenario happening either.
I read this again the other day from John Broz…
“If your family was captured and you were told you needed to put 100 pounds onto your max squat within two months or your family would be executed, would you squat once per week? Something tells me that you’d start squatting every day.”
I kept it pretty easy on box squats today as I’m going to be squatting tomorrow. I increased the amount of work I’m doing with the fat gripz. I like doing the curls with them as I don’t feel so vain…lol. Pull ups are getting better and I’m able to get some sets of 10. I think it’s getting time to do them weighted. I added face pulls and chest supported rows simply as a break from the Pendlay rows.
Awesome form on the Box squats man, see the box squats DO a raw lifter good!
I have to get some fat gripz, the pendlays are killing my biceps I have to drop em unfortunately. I may give’em one last stab tomorrow but more of a Yates style row, if not its DB rows for good.
Anybody who can do pullups with FatGripz is badass. Just sayin’.
You kinda lean forward when you’re box squating… or is it just me?
Black socks and runners? Shame![/quote]
You know, pull ups with the fat gripz aren’t really as hard as they sound.
I definitely lean forward on my box squats but I’m really trying to make them just a better version of my regular squat. What I’m really trying for is to keep my back arched which the box squats seem to really help me with.
LOL, but those are actually athletic socks not dress socks. It looks less stupid with my black chucks on.
Late session today as I am home with Holden all this week while his school is closed. The gym was crowded but it actually helped me to get into the zone better and really concentrate.
The 375 was a PR for me on the box squat. It was a bit too much of a drop at the end but I got back up again with no problem so I’ll count the rep. That definitely makes me pretty happy because it means progress and that’s always a good thing.
Felt strong today. Box squats went well and it was a nice, light day for me. Deads went really well and each rep was really powerful and fast going up. I did one set of snatch grip with the bar and 4 sets with the fat grips. I’m not sure about those to be frank. They tax your grip but what I’m going for is to get my back worked so I’m not sure about the value in doing these with the handicap. Thoughts?
I don’t have any grip issues currently (mixed grip…don’t care if I do double overhand. I’ll use straps if I need to do DOH) so I doubt I would use them for pulling movements.
I’m with you on that Git. I don’t really have grip issues at all so I don’t think it makes sense for me to use them on my pulling movements.

DB rows: 36*140
Fat grip curls supersetted with tri push downs
Solid session today. Back was a bit fatigued from yesterday so I took it a bit easy on my rows. I won’t be able to train until Thurs so I had to do back to back training sessions. My legs were beat from yesterday but I went heavy(er) on my squats.
Did a fair bit of driving this weekend and got little sleep. It took some toll but not a terrible lot.
I tried the front squats with continual tension meaning that I didn’t go all the way up before dropping down again. These are tough but I’ll up the weight next time. I’m hoping to put a bit of size on my skinny legs over the next year and I think that means higher reps. I’m going to add some more volume to my squats for assistance work too. Should be fun.
Are box squats the only ones you do right now? I do box squats once a week. I have read from Dave Tate (I think) that doing more than once a week is overkill. Thoughts?

I’ve also read that box squats don’t have any carryover to the raw squat so go figure. I’m really just experimenting around some more than anything. I’m doing box squats exclusively now just to work on form. I don’t really do them in traditional box squat fashion and they look much like my normal squat only with a big pause at the bottom.
I will add regular back squats back into the mix soon enough and need to plan out what the rotation will be.
The form on your box squats looked real good. You were really snapping your hips through.
Not a criticism, but the weight you’re using looks very light for you. I know you’re working on form, but you look capable of MUCH heavier.
Any plans to max out soon?
I’ve also read lots of conflicting opinions as to whether box squats are good for raw lifters or not. I read a recent post by Meat the otherday (can’t remember what forum) that said he felt that pause in the hole squats worked better and he said that he couldn’t understand the whole ‘sit back’ thing for raw lifters either and that he just squats straight down. I was really pleased to read that because I’ve never understood that one either.

I know that some of the T-Nation pause in the hole for awhile…does this cause a greater hypertrophy effect?
