I fear the same thing could happen to the Reacher books. Also, Cruise is generally the type of actor who has scripts tailored to his personality, which is bad news for those expecting a faithful adap.
I mean for those who don’t know, he’s a drifter since he left the army and doesn’t carry anything except his folding toothbrush. He buys new clothes at outlet stores every few days and drinks coffee by the gallon and as he drifts onto a town he’ll get himself in some sort of trouble with whoever is the bad guy in the town (corrupt sheriff or landowners…kind of like the bad guys you’d see in an A-Team or Knight Rider episode) he’s smart enough but also solves problems with his fists a lot.
Not sure if this has been added but with Cruise as Reacher you know the script will call for lots of cut action esoteric “insert name of current flavour of the month” martial art(s) in there.
Sad to say not like the Reacher in the style of the book who by sheer size alone would overpower the bad guys with fists or headbutt or whatever is at hand.
I’m thinking Cruise will be channeling a lot of Ethan “look at me I’m sooo cool” Hunt into this role. While he pulled off Collateral decently this is a major stretch in his acting range.

I think its not so much by size alone as ferocity. A total willingness to hurt maximally at first blow instead of escalating. Liked the new book the flashback was an interesting view into his past.
So I guess 1997 then. I recall that’s when he left the service.
That’s the one thing they shouldn’t follow from the books…Lee Child gave Reacher’s birthday in one book (October 30th, 1961) so that makes Reacher 50 years old this month. I prefer to think of him as 40…small difference but y’know.

I was reading stuff online about Reacher and some guy mentioned Robert Crais and his novels…has anyone read those?
Yes they are very solid imo. The Elvis Cole novels are the first series. Cole is the worlds greatest detective operating out of LA and is an ex army ranger. He has started a separate story arc with Joe Pike who is a semi main character in Cole novels. Pike is an ex recon marine and military contractor who can loosely be called a detective much more like reacher.
John Connolly has the Charlie Parker series of novels that have a little darker tone and have a touch of the supernatural they are excellent though and to be frank he is a vastly superior writer to the previous two.
There is always James Lee Burke as well. VERY good author with several active series going with a lot of focus on men and violence and society and evil. He brings some interesting ideas up about how say the vietnam war released a lot of hyperalert very violent men back into society and the effect it had. He’s moved into some of the same effects from some of the soldiers coming back from Iraq…this is not the books focus its more the characters and how they act and why they are flawed and drawn to violence.
The thing about Child’s books is that they may not be the best as far as the mystery part goes (he never gives enough information in the first half for a reader to try and figure out the ‘answer’) but many of us go back book after book for the comfort of “seeing” this big guy walk 17 miles into town, drink 2 quarts of coffee, eat 2 breakfasts with pie, throw away old clothes and buy new XXXL ones, get into trouble with the local sheriff or whatnot and once the story really gets started he needs to do Reacher Type Things every few pages or else the book is just another pot-bolier thriller for the beach or train ride…like many others with the smart cop or P.I.
So with Cruise in the role about all he can do is drink coffee as his Reacher Type Thing.

Of course if you really feel like reading the newest one now you could. It’s set in the late 90s and the Reacher books aren’t a series anyway.
My bookstore always seems to get the newest book in paperback in March…so I guess I’ll be getting it around then.
Last year the wife bought me a $150 nook from Barnes and Nobles, once you have an account you can download the books to a laptop app and actual phone app. I can order the books here at work and in 2 seconds be reading it.
