Much less kicking up the heels here. Look at 1:31, you extend and and shuffle your feet out to the side a bit. Lifts from the knees I always find harder, you don’t have the same power generated from the floor. If you feel like you are pulling up with your arms, just try and focus on the hamstrings, that’s where the power is.
Did you ever get in touch with the former weightlifting team guy who lives nearby to you?
it really looks like you are having a lot of fun with these lifts, it’s a joy to watch.[/quote]
I haven’t gotten in touch with him. I’m not too sure what to say to him since it doesn’t sound like he runs a club anymore. I know I should still call him though. This town is so small I just need to ask a friend or two and they probably know him actually now that I think of it.
I am having a lot of fun! These lifts are great. Very gratifying. Great escape from life’s bullshit too.
FarmerBrett, I just work until I have a good one or two at a weight then add more weight. Saturday I was doing them from the hang and I haven’t done those in a while so it took a lot more reps to get them right. I try to work up to my current max. I plan on jumping weight up faster and spend more energy trying to go heavier. But I generally quit when I start missing more than not.
Coyoytegal! Thank you so much! :)))
Grns, veggie, brute and Powerpuff blush =D
Alexus, I’m not sure but the scale went up 4 pounds but now it’s back down again. I guess I put it into the bar with all those snatches
I had a brutal headache last night and skipped working out. I was going to just squat but 10pm rolled around and my head was still pounding. My head’s fine now thankfully. I’m still dealing with some stressful situations and I’m sure that was a tension headache. I think it’s to be expected.

My boyfriend just went to a Rippetoe seminar and he told me that Rip really does believe in a lot of milk and strictly advised against Paleo! I know that comment was not entirely relevant, but I just thought I’d throw that out there lol

I also get tension headaches occasionally so I feels ur pain
Dani, I’m not a huge fan of Paleo either but that’s just because of my appetite I think it’s a good for some people to clean up their diet and get rid of some foods that are causing problems but the premise of Paleo is off IMO. I think it’s better to understand your body individually and how you respond to foods and adjust your diet to suit your needs with the possibility of eliminating some that are a problem but not because it was or wasn’t available to humans at different times.
For active, athletic types, I think it can be too unnecessarily restrictive and for most people looking to get stronger, some calorie laden, saturated fat dripping fast food here and there is going to help.
Don’t get me wrong, changing my diet from a typically crappy western diet to one that was Paleo has improved my health and well being drastically, but the diet I had to stick to to lose a lot of excess bodyfat and get in better condition had to change as I became leaner and stronger and sought out more strength.
I eat a lot of calories everyday and that would be very hard to keep up with if I didn’t throw in some junk here and there. There was a while where I was still eating really ‘clean’ but I had lost most of the bodyfat that I started to become emaciated and my strength was suffering. It wasn’t until I loosened up the diet that I started to make gains again.
I’d love it if most of my family would start eating Paleo though because they are sedentary and have terrible diets. My brother has already had a heart attack. They will never get so into their health and fitness that they are tweaking their diet like I do so easy to figure out rules to dictate what to eat would help them IMO. They would do alright if they never ate bread, rice or potatoes, or fast food ever again.
I was too lazy to update my log with yesterday’s workout and it was pretty late (Hockey getting int he way of training!)
I did a bunch of snatches, some from the hang and the rest with a pause or slowly off the floor and worked up to 85lbs. Then some hang cleans and some cleans up to 120lbs and I finished with some squats.
Alexus favorited this video on youtube and I really love it and watched it between sets:
Snatches are getting much easier and I feel like I’m not using my arms…but I thought that before lol. I was struggling with 85lbs last week and now they’re easy so I hope that means I’m doing something right. I gave 90lbs a shot 4 times but no I was planning on doing less snatches but they were going so nicely.
The vid is all at 85lbs.

90x0 guess not tonight!
My jerks were rather lifeless tonight, but I did them anyway. I think I’m hurting from not enough sleep (some insomnia) but I’m hoping I tired myself out enough tonight that I hope to sleep better. I’m not sure if I’m being smart in how I’m practicing them. I don’t get the same feel if I go too light but if I go too heavy and can only do a few sets before I’m spent. I might ask about that in the oly forum.

hey wow your first pull is looking really good to me! nice hip snap, too
you do do a lot of sets… my coach suggested 8-10 sets for the Oly lifts. and (gasp! shock! horror!) singles count as one set. I didn’t listen to him, of course, was having far too much fun for that. Have started to come around to that now. but only because i gotta do my squats. sigh. and abs. double sigh.
could you maybe try one day of jerking first when you are totally fresh? maybe they would feel a lot different then.
glad you liked the vid it had a huge role to play in my desire to learn Oly lifting.
yay! Thanks Alexus I should still post that vid over in the oly log and see if it’s getting better.
That sounds like a good idea. I often plan on just doing a couple of sets of snatches as a warm up for cleans & jerks but it never happens.
I think it’s got to do with my sleep issues too (and some long work hours). It’s a long weekend and hopefully I can get some rest to support my marathon lifting sessions
Yup, not enough sleep has been hitting me hard too. Stress leaves me not sleeping and not eating. NOT productive, especially because I still trained my ass off this week despite everything. Hope that stuff straightens out for ya soon!
Mainy, thanks =) I still think I give up too easy lol. Not in number of attempts but in the attempt. I don’t push hard enough when it feels hard and then I’m annoyed and try it again…and again..
Thursday workout
Did some morning squats but I didn’t log them. They were okay, not my best.

My cleans aren’t really going up and I’m sure it’s technique. Last night I felt like they had no power and I was using all muscle to get the bar up. I definitely need a lot of work on them.
I should try and get some video not from the side to see what’s going on there.
