most powerlifters do train biceps
I used to never train biceps because I got caught up in that “functionality” shit or whatever.
Now I come down with tendon problems at the insertion point of my biceps pretty much every other week from bench pressing and I am kicking myself for avoiding curls. Gotta keep things balanced. Recently I have curled 75x20. Weak, especially considering my benching is nearing 225x20.
I train biceps. I feel it helps prevent tendonitis, and they help stabalize on the the bench.
I think it’s a good idea to train your arms. I bought into the whole “compounds are enough” thing from the very beginning, and now my arms are a lot smaller than the rest of my body and they ache when I’m doing heavy bench pressing. I started adding in curls and they feel a lot better now.
Training biceps for a powerlifter is not that uncommon, like other said it stabilize the bench press but also doing heavy cheat curl will put stress on the tendon and reinforce it to prevent a possible rupture on a max attempt DL.
I think in one of those interviews with Wendler fairly recently, he said something about bicep curls helping your bench. Then someone in the discussions session said something about some head of the bicep helping with shoulder adduction or whatnot. I’ve also felt them straining recently on a ME wide(ish) grip bench press, but I’m a weak little tard, so take that as you will.

I’m surprised Wendler would say that.
Based on his training log on EliteFTS and pretty much everything he says, he never does curls or any other isolation work for that matter. I don’t know exactly how he trained when he was competing. He must have done some direct work for his triceps at least.
I know Kroc trains more like a bodybuilder in his PL days.(I know that he’s training for a BB show now) He always has done a bodypart type split while using a fair amount of isolation exercises.
Do you guys feel lateral raises are beneficial for powerlifters?

Well worth listening to. I had the same problems, as did 3 other people we trained with, because we never did direct bicep work.

I think so . here’s why .
when I started lifting , extremely weak , I had pretty bad shoulder pain when benching , and the painful shoulder was considerably weaker . about a year later , not quite as weak , but still had shoulder pain . started reading , mostly here , and started doing lateral raises , face pulls , and dumb bell benching , all prescribed on these forums/articles . now , no pain at all and the weaker shoulder is almost caught up to the stronger .
