I thought this over more this morning; a few things about it:
She says she doesn’t mind being called fat, since she knows she is fat, what she doesn’t like is being called a “bad role model”. Fair enough, to a point.
Let’s focus on the behaviour that is called into question; being fat. Can that legitimately be called being a “bad role model” in this setting? People compare obesity and its health risks to smoking a drinking, and I’d say that’s about right in terms of health risks. Well, when was the last time you saw someone throw down some shots on a news channel? Or light up a cigarette? Hmm, I can’t ever recall seeing that either. Why? Because it would be instantly perceived and criticized for being a bad example to the viewers and such.
Is there some huge gap in my logic here, or am I missing something? Because this all seems quite simple to me, really.
A bully would tease her with candies, chocolate bars, french fries and gravy on air it would be funny seeing her eat or fight the temptation.
Too bad i cannot email those to her.
@ hungry4more

I think what you’re saying is accurate. But if a viewer of the show believes that simply being a fat person on tv is a bad influence to children (whether that viewpoint is legitimate or not), doesn’t he have every right to send a message to a published email address expressing his concerns? Couldn’t her response have just been, ‘well that’s your opinion’ (because that’s just his opinion)? I think that what’s weird to me and a lot of T Nation is the overreaction.
I also think she wouldn’t have responded this way if the email had been “hey fatty, U suck! youre a bad rol modil!!!” It doesn’t hurt so much when an idiot criticizes you. What hurt her was that the email was well thought out and clearly written, and expressed a serious point. That’s what she couldn’t take. That an intelligent person had something negative to say.
This was grandstanding. I don’t particularly like grandstanding in any form. I think she would have been better off expressing the truth: that her feelings WERE hurt. She WAS emotional about this. Ranting about bullies diminished her entire argument, because she wasn’t really bullied. She took this in a direction it didn’t need to go.

No, what’s worse is no one has publicly called her on her grandstanding that anyone would actually listen to like a celebrity. What’s worse than that is enough people in America agreed with her that this became nationwide phenom.
I disagree with outright publicly humiliating someone…but he didn’t do that. He sent an email…and then she broke it to the world to become famous from it.
You don’t get respect because you can eat more ice cream than everyone else in the room.
LOL @ “fat acceptance”. I could see “fat tolerance”, but “acceptance” means these people think you have to.

Agree with all of this. The fact that this email went public was her fault. Not her husband’s, or her producer’s, or whoever she wanted to falsely credit for the publicity.
As far as the overriding social issue at stake, I do agree that the worst part is the sympathy, and the concept of fat acceptance. The fact that the healthy dude is vilified. The point that Nards brought up about fat people saying they don’t want to just eat carrots, or whatever exaggeration they come up with. All this is fucking terrible for us.

I agree. She took this private matter and made it public, which is ethically wrong. All the people that were “backing her” were justifying their own fatassness (that’s a word, right?). I am surprised that nobody has called her out. I’ve seen multiple people on Facebook supporting her too. WTF

I think we’ve all heard that from women who say they want to get in shape “But I don’t think it’s healthy to eat one carrot stick a day and that’s it!” (NO ONE EVER SAID EAT ONE CARROT STICK MORON!)
Or “I don’t think it’s healthy to run like 100 miles every day y’know!” ( NO ONE SAID RUN 100 MILES…JUST 2 WOULD BE NICE!)
I’ve heard those wacky black and white complaints many times.[/quote]
Years ago at work I overheard a group of women talking about losing weight. One lady said, “Metabolife sucks. I’ve been on it for a month now, and nothing!”
This comment was made as she was chowing down on two giant slices of pepperoni pizza and a large Pepsi.

I used to work at a GNC in school. The number of times some huge woman would walk in, ask for this month’s latest pill, and then return with half the bottle two weeks later claiming it “didn’t work” and that she wanted her money back was reaching infinity.

Last time that happened to me the woman said she had gained 10 lbs, i was literally lost for words.
How much do you have to eat to gain 10 lbs let alone 10 lbs on fat burners.

That actually happened while I was in store a few years back.

You should have put her on a weight lifting program. If you’re gonna bulk, might as well do it right.

She might get too bulky though. That’s the last thing she wants.
I had a female coworker once state as though she discovered a big secret “They only call it Diet Coke because it has no calories you know!”
I think she thought it had some extra medicinal weight-loss properties. Ugh.
I think we’ve all encountered people that think our protein powder has some hidden ingredient that only people that lift can use. They also think it builds muscles so fast that they should avoid it. Like “No way amd I having a shake with that! I’ll bust out of my shirt!”
Yeah, I wish…hey, didn’t you eat protein today? An egg? Some chicken? Did you bust out of your shirt???

Not at all surprised. People often use fat burners, fat blockers, spin class, “dieting” etc. as excuses to eat even more poorly than they previously were.
Am I the only one who thinks we should do something about this? Present an entirely different opinion to the media? Lets face it, most of our nation is obese, it didn’t just strike a nerve with her, it struck a nerve with everyone else supporting her who got off the couch, eating a already said tub of ice cream to champion support on facebook with their stubby little fingers.
How can you try to teach your child self control, when you yourself practice none of it in a pretty big area? Food Consumption! Why do these people think it’s ok to be obese?

As funny as this is, it’s sad when it’s someone close. I was talking to my aunt once about health/lifting weights, and she naturally used that line about getting “too bulky”…she weighed(weighs) around 300 lbs. YOU ALREADY ARE BULKY! But of course if I come out and say that, I’ve now alienated like a quarter of my extended family. And yet I almost feel it’s just as rude and selfish NOT to say anything, because her diet/lifestyle are killing her. Just sad.

You’re not exactly the best person to tell a woman lifting weights will not get her bulky. You lift weights and you are “bulky”
Also it doesn’t have to be weight lifting really. At 300lbs, going for a brisk walk daily is enough for her.
You want her to be in better shape? Go for a walk with her everyday.
