By 2015, more people will be fat than not fat:
Keep in mind these things go by weight and bmi only
In the U.S. while not everybody are bodybuilders alot more people are lifting weights and are alot heavier than the 25 BMI index allows.
What do you intend by “Fat is the new black”?
I don’t gettit. Are we getting fatter AND blacker??? Shit man, I’m going dancing.
fat isnt evin a color u moran

LOL…I was going to say that.
interesting choice of words for the title
Man, some of you need to read some actual books. I did not realize people were so ignorant that they would see something racial in the title. WOW.
Here is an explanation of “the new black.”
“‘_____ is the new black’ is a catch phrase and snowclone used to indicate the sudden popularity or versatility of an idea at the expense of the popularity of a second idea. It is also the origin of a snowclone of the form ‘X is the new Y’”
Black is generally a popular color. So saying, “Fat is the new black” is like saying, “Fat is the new ‘in’ thing.”
Again, the ignorance is astounding.
Now, in fairness, some could say that “___ the new black” is so overused that it’s becoming cliche. I tend to fall into that camp on many days. But to not even get “the new black” reference?
Ignorance, I guess, is the new black.

Even if you were generous and split our(USA) obese population in half, and called one half overweight due to muscle weighing more than fat, we’d still be like #4 or 5 most obese nations. There is not a chance in hell 20% of our population are big enough that they are testing as obese(30 BMI).
Using myself as an example at 5’11, I’d have to tip the scale at ~215lbs to hit 30. Sure the fitness crazed portion of our population probably makes up a LARGE % of “overweight”(25-30 BMI), but obese is a big step up.
I guess I am more pessimistic. I thought fat already was the new thing. Sure it is not idealized in the media, but more so than ever it seems like fat acceptance is gaining ground, and making fun of fat people is becoming more taboo.
Meanwhile, I have been finding myself becoming increasingly intolerant of fat people, and I cannot help but wonder what will happen in 10 years.

Because of where I live, I often forget that fat people even exist. I’m serious. Then I travel and completely whig out. I have nothing against fat people; but, man, there are so many of them.
What will be interesting is if people who are fat will eventually say, “It’s okay to be fat.” Right now, even fat people are ashamed to be fat. This is why the dieting industry is booming. But what will happen when it’s socially acceptable to be fat? Will people who aren’t fat be viewed with indignance?
He means black as in a color for clothes, not racially.
Haven’t you heard this term before when other colors are considered in fashion?
The responses are funny as hell though.
I understood the title right away.
I am sure that the percentage of Americans that have a “overweight” BMI because of larger than average muscle mass is a very small percentage. For me to get down to an accetable weight based on BMI, I would have to lose about 15 lbs of lean mass, and be 0% BF. Most people are just fat, though. I would like to see a study based on %BF, rather than BMI.
Jeff
The responses to the title of this thread completely overshadowed the actual subject of the post, in my opinion.
Come on, people, it WAS pretty obvious what was meant.

Right, because if it was racial wouldn’t it be, “Phat is The New Black?” Right? Anyone… anyone? Get it… I’m dumb.
I have a hard time choosing words to use when speaking to my 2 1/2 year old. I like to instill in her that eating her fruits and veggies and chicken is good for you. Exercise is good…and candy is not good because it will make you fat if you eat too much…
however…ALL of her daycare providers are obese (as are generally everyone we ever see) and I don’t want her repeating too much of what I say.
getting fat IS a bad thing…but with the way things are today…i feel bad for pointing that out to my kid…

I agree. Though you’d think people would at least think a little bit before accusing someone of being a racist or a moron.
