They’d have to draw her camel toe.

Also for what it’s worth, my daughter, sisters, and girlfriend all have rather charming bitchy streaks. It’s like the those candies that are sour on the outside and sweet on the inside. It’s all about the balance.

Broncoandy: Not seeing it in your last 2 pics.

But, are you saying that male and female superheros get identical treatment in comic books. Because there aren’t enough hours in the day for me to plaster this thread with pics of sexy female superheros.

Gotta have personality.

He’s often drawn spread legged. As opposed to ass in the air. Either way easy to see as sexualisation if spiderwoman does it.

Sexism in comic books is really over blown. It’s not like here in 2015 Wonder woman is the justice league’s secretary like she was way back when. THAT was sexist. But characters are drawn as ideal regardless of gender. If your a hetero male, or lesbian woman and are visually stimulated you’ll probably find the females to be “provocative” at times. But it’s not like a gay man or hetero woman who is visually stimulated will never find the men’s broad shouldered adonis physiques to be pleasant. Ask a gay man if Superman is sexy.

Probably the biggest reason for sexism in comics is that they’re drawn by men. More female artists would do women better, but they’re all busy taking women’s studies instead of art so…

Yes and you know why that is?

Because women are sex objects while men are success objects.

To advertize using a nekkid men tells me nothing about what suit he wears, what jobs he has, what car he drives, what watch he uses…

You know, the markers of success.
I don’t disagree that this is what many (most?) people believe, that their worth is tied to what they can achieve or how good they look.

I try and teach my children otherwise. Not everyone wants to ride on that carousel.
I dont disagree with that, the only thing I am saying is that the carousel does exist and they need to know that.

It wont go away by wishing it did not exist.
Agreed.
Also agree. You are not your fucking khakis. Or your boobs. But the much of the world will see you that way, and that has a way of influencing weak minds of both sexes into trying to “conform” with the herd’s ideals.

In a nutshell - The prevalence of cosmetic surgery in this country is is messed up, IMO. I was riffing a little off of Emily talking about the unrealistic beauty ideal in the media with so much that is fake, and how that is a symptom of something disturbing about our culture.

I’m not trying to change biology here, or alter the laws of attraction.

No, the irony of someone who spends 8-10 hours per week in a gym saying this is extreme is not lost on me. A lot of those women would probably find my gym habit even more disturbing. Yes, some of it is because it makes me feel good, and appreciate being healthy and strong, but a lot of my motivation is about aesthetics.

About Bean’s OP -

Much better. This one is from a 2007 campaign by Wyoming Libraries. I appreciate the humor. I’d love to have a t-shirt.

"…The campaign cost less than $3,000 and involved sending mudflap girl stickers and posters to mechanic’s shops, auto parts stores and libraries around the state, said Tina Lackey, the library’s marketing manager.

The goal was to let men who work on cars know about the state’s online database of Chilton auto repair manuals. The database is accessible for free to anyone with a Wyoming library card.

“It was a way to market to a new demographic from what we usually see or who usually uses the library,” Lackey said.

Library officials say the campaign succeeded. Yet it drew complaints from critics who said the library shouldn’t objectify women in its promotional materials…"
orion wrote:

I am not counting her as one of the feministas who try to dictate what men “should” be attracted to,
No, not at all, and that shit is silly.
but the fact of the matter is, being attractive has a high impact on the quality of life of girls and later woman.

Thats how it is and whether you implant the idea early or not, it will be that way.
Agreed, but you’re conflating two things.

 1. attraction and the biological instincts we all have in that arena
 2. A person’s worth not only in society, but in the context of this thread, to themselves.

Yes the two intertwine, and that isn’t an issue until it goes to the extreme. I think she is saying getting bolt-on’s for the simple sake of “but da big boobz is da hotnezz” is extreme. Doing it because it makes HER feel good about HERSELF? Eh… I can’t really knock someone. Doing it because it makes her feel like she fits in better with what is expected of her? That’s when it starts to be an issue.

As a species we’ve really moved past the whole “every moment in life is about furthering the species, lets fuck” stage. Sexual attraction, and attractiveness matters, and helps in life, yes. But it isn’t the measure of a person, and that is the only line we’re trying to draw.

Fat fugly people can and do contribute great things to the world.
Now, you can indoctrinate your children that it should not be that way, but you will only create neurotic clusterfucks* who cannot deal with the real world.

Now, should women be all about pleasing the menz? No.

Should they ignore that they have to give in order to get from men? Hell no.

*read, hipster bitches, SJWs and tumblerinas.
I guess the third point would be:

Are there things to measure your self worth outside of what men think or how they interact with you? Yes.

Well hello there…

About the mudflap girl with a book image - I was surprised that some of the feminists took such a negative view. I find it clever. It takes the classic sexy image and kind of turns it upside down, by giving her a brain, too. Plus, I always have a book going… I like it a lot.

BTW, am I the only person who saw the Leg Lamp from that Christmas movie in the Electric Co. billboard? It would have been nostalgic/ funny if they’d have used that image. At least it might not have completely sucked.

Oh. I hate that picture. That’s my visceral reaction.

I’m not a Batman Comic reader so I don’t know any of the history/ nuance behind it.

Not based on this thread, but the death of free speech in general. It’s my own little silent protest. It is kind of ironic though.

Yeah, it is definitely a gut punch picture. However, if you commissioned a piece of cover art for the Joker and Batgirl, The Killing Joke was basically the spring board for the relevance of Batgirl and that picture articulates the tone of that story pretty well. It was a sickening story as well.

I mean, not to steer this thread off course, but this artist has to change the cover because a handful of people don’t like it based on an inference on their part while 50 Shades of Grey makes $500 million and counting. Give me a break.

In short, you are supposed to hate the picture. The artist did his job if it makes you squirm. The Killing Joke has Barbara Gordon (Batgirl at the time) being shot through the spine, paralyzed, then stripped and photographed by the Joker (there is no mention of sexual assault one way or the other). The pictures are then shown to her father, Commissioner Gordon, who has also been taken hostage by the Joker, stripped and put in a cage. This is all an effort to drive the guy crazy because of “one bad day”. Very violent, very sadistic, shaped the image of the Joker, and made Barbara Gordon an actually important character in the DC universe.
